MASTODON + DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN + MARS VOLTA + JANE’S ADDICTION = GIRAFFE TONGUE?

So how’s this for a new supergroup? Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen, and and  former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery are apparently joining forces to create a new project. And while I’m always a little bit suspicious of mega-all-star-team-ups like this — for every Murder Construct, it seems like there are ten The Damned Things — it’s hard not to get excited by that line-up.

Right now things are apparently moving slowly with the yet-to-be-named band, ’cause its members are scattered across the country. Hinds tells Noisecreep that “We want to record crazy stuff and Ben is working on that, but it’s been hard to get together.” In the meantime, Hinds is apparently pushing for the outfit to adopt the moniker “Giraffe Tongue,” because “they look sick.” Which is fair enough!

But honestly, they could call themselves Attack Attack Attack!!!, and as long as the music they produce is, indeed, “crazy stuff,” I won’t really care. The worst thing that could happen would be for Giraffe Tongue (or whatever they end up calling themselves) to produce something middle-of-the-road (although I’m not sure that any of these dudes have ever really produced anything middle-of-the-road), so the crazier the better, I say.

Hopefully the musicians’ schedules align sometime soon, and this doesn’t end up being one of those potentially-awesome collaborations that never actually happens, like Tapeworm. More details as they become available…
