Deftones May 13

By all accounts, the Deftones’ two consecutive headline performances at New York City’s Best Buy Theater on May 13th and 14th were absolutely fucking awesome. For many, it was a chance to see a rare headline show by a band who doesn’t often makes it out to this coast. For my friend Eduardo, the May 14th show was a night of firsts: first metal show, first Deftones show, first moshpit, first (and second!) crowd-surf. For me it was a chance to get up front and get sweaty in the pit, something my old bones hadn’t done in quite some time. And for MS photographer Jacqueline Cheng, Friday’s May 13th show was an opportunity to snap some excellent pics of the Deftones and the two opening bands, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Funeral Party. Those pics after the mosh.

Saw this tour in Philly – Deftones fucking slayed, DEP was boring (that still hurts to type) and Funeral Party was just horrible. 1-3 ain’t too shabby.

I am an idiot for missing this show when it came to my city

I loved the Deftones the first few times I saw them in 1996 and 1997 but the times I saw them after that I was just not as impressed. For anyone who has seen the Deftones in the later 90s they would know their energy was so much greater, but thats just me. As for DEP I saw them in the late 90s also when they used to set their guitars on fire on the stage and were completely insane, they are still good, much better musically now and their songs are not just pure chaos, but they to aren’t the band they used to be live.

Deftones are, by all accounts, back to wear they were live in their heyday.

I haven’t seen them since around 2000 so I can’t comment on the past 11 years but the few times I saw them in 99 and 00 they lost so much of what made them great in the mid to later 90s

Then I suggest you get with the now – the shows they’ve been doing since Chi’s accident are probably the best of their career.

          • Seanicus

Yeah. I’ve seen them four times, the first being the Back to School tour in 2000, again in 2006 with The Fall of Troy, last year with Baroness and this tour. They sound better touring Diamond Eyes than they did White Pony. This band is above and beyond better than they ever have been. I’m stoked about them writing new material after this tour.

I think it’s actually and theoretically for the Deftones to ever be “absolutely fucking awesome”. The good thing about them is their…Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

    • Flying Scotsman

Impossible would be the missing adjective from above. But to talk about the Detones, one would have to…Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  • Mondo Gecko

Holy freakin’ Jesus, Liam from Dillinger is one seriously hairy dude. He could easily go without a sweater all winter and be fine.

    • Hetal

Pretty sure those are tattoos, not chest hair.

These guys destroyed San Francisco last night, except no Funeral Party, and no Mike Patton, who was rumored to show up and sing a few songs…

    • pat

Yeah that really sucks about Patton, i was looking forward to that…. DEP still killed it though and Deftones were great as well.

  • F the Naysayers

This was one of those shows where I just lost my shit and went to another place for a while. The performance killed. Their new shit came off as extremely fucking DOOMY for many songs, which was absolutely amazing. And the imagery they had going on in the backdrop…I still get chills thinking about the horrifying nature of the visuals during Royal.

  • James

Saw them in Sacramento yesterday (6/14) what a show.

Deftones were really good, Chino and Sergio both jumping around with big smiles on their faces, the vibe was great.

Crowd was a little subdued ( I think due to the heat in the place).

Also, Greg from DEP is way too old to be wearing pants that tight,
but he has some damnfinesexy legs.

I was at both of these shows. I was about 85% there for DEP. I gotta say, neither night was the best for them. I don’t blame the band, I don’t think their meant for a venue like this. It wasn’t bad by any means, they can’t be bad (my favorite band) but it didn’t TOUCH the head lining set from 5/15! That was something special! Deftones were also much better the 2nd night IMO!

that’s so random that funeral party was there considering they were touring with panic at the disco last week.
