EVAN BREWER HAS “VERTIGO”

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011 at 10:00am by

I’ve been curious to hear Evan Brewer’s Alone ever since I heard the bassist discussing his intentions for the album — how “every sound you hear on the album came from a bass guitar,” because the bass is still a “young” instrument, and he wants to explore its potential, and so on and so forth. That sounds really interesting, right?

Well, now, finally, less than a week before the release of the record, there’s a track from Alone called “Vertigo” streaming online, and… yep, that’s what a bass all by itself sounds like.

Look: I don’t think it’s bad at ALL. From a music dorkery standpoint, it’s probably terrific, even. I can’t really imagine myself sitting around and listening to this a lot, though. That may say more about me than it does the album. Vince did say that “The market for these kinds of acts is limited — extremely limited, especially for a bass player.” And, well, now we know why. If you’re not fascinated by this on the most technical of levels, I’m not sure that there’s anything to hold your interest.

I guess what I’m saying is, there’s no teaspoon of sugar to help this medicine go down.

But I’m still gonna listen to Alone all the way through at least twice. I’d like to like this, I’d like to understand what Brewer is trying to achieve. I just may ultimately be one of the people who doesn’t fit into the niche market for a solo bass release.

Check out “Vertigo” for yourself here, then weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section. Alone comes out on Sumerian on June 28. Brewer then heads out on tour with Animals as Leaders, Intronaut, Dead Letter Circus, and Last Chance to Reason, which is a sweet, sweet-ass line-up. Here are tour dates:

It really is purely exploration, expanding horizons, looking for new sounds… I wouldn’t think of this as an album (as in songs, tunes to be listened to casually) but more like an experiment (as in technical exercises and sound tests to be dissected and analysed).

I totally agree. I think, too, that if you’re interested enough in novel sounds, they can even work better (i.e., be more appealing/ attractive to listen to) than a well-written, if standard song.

I think it is cool he is doing the album with just bass. But it would be sick if he had a drummer playing with his groove. Bass slaps with a slick beat sounds very nice!!!

    • hATE-eR

Too many people do this kind of thing already (adding the background) and it’s great, but it’s refreshing to hear something a bit more unique – after all, don’t we assume that’s why the album would be titled “Alone”?

  • jd091

Well, it’s GOTTA sound better than the shit that was Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth).

    • Danhigh

you can go jump off a cliff now

    • Metalwolf

Yeah, die, that solo is beautiful. What the hell is your problem. That was one of the main reasons I play bass.

      • jd091

Haphazard groups of triplets bunched together hastily don’t make beauty. It’s fucking terrible.

        • Android

          +1

I think Cliff Burton was good at what he did, but he really wasn’t all that great as an overall musician. Metallica have never had a good bassist. Megadeth, on the other hand…

…..have never had a good vocalist.

            had to.

        • Metalwolf

Groups of triplets? I don’t recall a single part of the solo that has a bunch of triplets.

  • chris

this was really good , i feel like maybe this wasnt the best song to debut , but damn , you have to give this guy credit for releasing a bass album to marketplace its being exposed to , never seen it before …. or maybe i just fit the niche lol

  • Sapien

I am a bass player and I am extremely envious of this guy. He can fucking play like no one else can.

Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Steve Bailey, Jaco Pastorious, Michael Manring, and Jeff Berlin, to name a few.

I would agree that technically it’s interesting and well-done, but not something I would listen to very often, if at all.

Maybe if I had a groovy Heavy Metal recovery clinic that needed quiet music over the speakers, you know?

  • afkeefe07

I’m so stoked for that tour.

    This sounds awesome!

  • Buckaroo

I am a bass player. Solo bass is fucking boring. I don’t care how many arpeggiated sweeps happen or how fast a person slaps and pulls – bass sounds good under guitars and drums. This just sounds like an asshat sitting in Guitar Center jerking off into an Ampeg.

    • Rudiger

ha ha ha, i dont agree with you, but that Guitar Center line made my day

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Alkahest

Having heard the whole album, I can tell you that it most certainly is not boring, directionless wank.

  • Rudiger

pretty stoked to see what his live show is like. I kinda wish he would play bass for animals as leaders since he was in Reflux with Tosin and they have already written badass music together

  • Irrational Gaze

I was fortunate to see Evan Brewer when he toured with Animosity when they opened up for Between The Buried and Me on the Colors Tour in ’07. I was up front the majority of the show, cause it was in Nashville, and aside from North Carolina, Nashville was the first city to see Colors live in it’s entirety. I digress, anyways- This fellow can play. Well, inf act. During Animosity’s sound check, he was arpeggiating scale runs like a maniac. In fact, his dad was at that show in front taking pictures during their set and stated how proud he was of his son before the show. It’s cool to see raw talent getting recognition these days. I”m 50/50 on the solo bass idea: People like Wooten & Les Claypool make the bass their own, and I think Evan does exactly that: takes the instrument and wields it to his liking. I think going on tour with Animals As Leaders will be good recognition for Evan.

  • Datrick

i really like what i’ve heard so far. i think “alone” will be pretty sweet.

Ma. Stur. Ba. Tion. This is absolutely nothing new for the bass guitar. The idea that bass players are either just dumbed down guitarists or flashy technique monkeys, and nothing in between, haunts those of us who work our asses off studying the role of bass in music. If you want to understand what bass really is listen to J.S. Bach and Vladislav Delay. Or Justin Meldal-Johnsen. Technical acrobatics ≠ music.

    • Brendan

Even bassists like Justin Chancellor and Joe Lester demonstrate an understanding of their roles within the music really well. They know exactly when to take the lead and when to sit back and accent the guitars. I think that’s what makes a good bass player. That being said, I’m super stoked for this album.

All I hear is string noise. Sounds like a more trebly Fieldy.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Alkahest

      You must need new headphones.

      • http://www.thejamminjabber.com thejamminjabber

        You need new tastephones.

  • Cayle

He should change the name of this album to “look what I can do”. I think things like this are needed in music though, because maybe they will inspire others to take the idea started here and find a way to put it in to making good songs instead of instrument aerobics.

Eh, it sounds really cool but i don’t think i’d ever listen to something like this regularely. It’s cool to say “hey look at this it’s all bass blah blah blah” to some friends, but beyond showcasing like 2 minutes or so, i’d get bored of the music and move on to something else.

This is cool and all, but jazz players always win. Listen below:

    Hellborg > Brewer

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cody-Rogers/574720964 Cody Rogers

No shit, it’s fucking Jonas Hellborg. No one’s comparing Evan to Jonas, and I don’t think anyone who’s ever picked up a bass would, but that’s not that point. They’re both incredible musicians on different levels.

WTF Evan doesnt like Texas or something!?
