LANDPHIL MARATHON: REGARDING THE CM PUNK “SHOOT”

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011 at 5:00pm by

Hello, wrestling fans!

Sometimes in the world of wrestling things can happen that are not a part of the “script.” These rare moments are some of the greatest things that can happen on live TV, because the audience gets to see something “real” instead of the same old boring fake wrestling crap. There have been a couple of times over the years when a wrestler will take advantage of the fact that it is live television and say something on the mic that wasn’t planned. In the wrestling world it is know as a “shoot.”

Such a moment occurred this past Monday on Raw. A wrestler called CM Punk came out on TV and said some pretty crazy things about Vince McMahon (video above). Some people are saying he is trying to get fired. I think it is very entertaining for sure. I love it when someone has the balls to shake things up a bit in the stale world of WWE.

Punk came out on TV and started by saying that he was the best blah blah blah normal wrestling stuff, but then he broke the fourth wall and started telling John Cena that he is as good at kissing Vince McMahon’s ass as Hulk Hogan was (ha!). Then he started talking about how Brock Lesnar left the WWE like he is going to do, and put over Paul Heymen. Then it got interesting… He went into a bit about how he’s mad that he isn’t on the WWE merch, isn’t in their movies, etc., and how pissed he is that The Rock is in the main event of Wrestlemania, and he isn’t.

But the best part of the shoot was when CM Punk said that he is just a spoke in the wheel of the giant corporation that is WWE, and that Vince McMahon’s company is going to continue to make money despite Vince’s crappy product. Then he has the guts to say “I’d like to think that this company will be better after Vince McMahon’s dead, but the fact is its going to be taken over by his idiotic daughter and his doofus son-in-law.” HA HA HA! YES!!!

In case you’re out of the loop, I will fill you in on how crazy it is that someone said that on live WWE TV. First of all, he insinuated (in a roundabout way) he hopes Vince dies so WWE can change for the better. Second of all, he publicly called out the Wrestler known as Triple H, who married into the McMahon family via Vince’s daughter, Stephanie, so he could have a permanent foothold in his dream job at the WWE. And thirdly, he called Stephanie an idiot on the show that for which she is the head writer. Good stuff!

There alot of wrestling nerds on the internet that say this whole thing was planned to get some serious heat going for CM Punk. But I don’t think that Punk would have started saying such crazy shit about the McMahon family on TV if it was scripted… I could be wrong, though. Either way, it was one of the most entertaining things I have seen on Raw in a looooong time, and it makes me want to tune in next week to see what happens next — like good wrestling should you know?

Anyways, I am out of here… see you next week!

It was a well calculated worked shoot. But there is no way McMahon didn’t know what was gonna go down. He could’ve cut his mic at any point. And they let it go just the right amount of time. That doesn’t make it any less awesome.

CM Punk is a truly underutilized star. I hope they take advantage of this potentially awesome angle and give Punk the belt. Having him job to Cena would just be a wasted opportunity.

It wasn’t a shoot. While Punk did improvise, it was a worked promo that the WWE knew about beforehand.

  • Nick

Do people over the age of 14 actually watch this crap? Don’t get me wrong when I was 10-14 years old I loved WWF, but that was the late 80s early 90s and I was a stupid kid.

    • gnarlk

i don’t anymore, but i still prefer it to the “realism” of UFC or anything similar…

  • Jessica

JASTA is doing a solo album! Hear what he’s go to say about it! http://bit.ly/jqBjZ8

  • d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

I sincerely hope the WWE does what it takes to persuade Punk to stick around. Punk was already one of the best (if not the best) the WWE currently has to offer, and he took things to a whole new level this past Monday. The WWE would drop the ball big time by letting him walk.

  • Curmudgeon

Wow, I am outta the loop. Last time I watched wrestling, CM Punk was a newbie in TNA…. back when they still had an Octagon ring. Wonder whatever happened to Sharkboy and Abyss, lol. Anyway, I’m sure Punk came up with that stuff on the spot but was told beforehand to berate the company. And, just from vibes, I’m sure HHH is really a great guy and didn’t marry into the McMahon’s just to climb the corporate ladder.

  • GabeSmith

I thought this whole shoot, planned or not, was fantastic. CM Punk is in my eyes the best WWE has right now and one of the few characters that they are pushing in the right direction. His comments were a great way to draw heat and get publicity drawn to the promotion bad or good. Like they say ANY publicity is GOOD publicity. And lastly, I absolutely love the Landphil Marathon posts. Your doing a great job man Keep it up!!!

  • Grymmbear

CM Punk is the only thing keeping me watching wrestling AT ALL.

He’s not only a great wrestler, but he’s fucking AMAZING on the mic, and can be fuckin’ hilarious in the ring.

For example, Punk’s ability to get out of a jam creatively…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXAs_nS_lvM

And his infamous “invisible mic” promo:

    http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-reasons-pro-wrestlers-are-best-actors-in-world/

They would never have a wrestler break the fourth wall this extensively on purpose. My best guess is that he was supposed to air some in-character grievances, and he decided to air some very real ones instead, and they probably couldn’t decide whether or not to cut him off until he got personal about Vince McMahon.

    • d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

From what I heard, they cut Punk off right when he was about to rip on their anti-bullying campaign. Makes sense, especially considering the piping hot water they got into when the Rock used that homophobic slur towards John Cena.

      • d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

Correction: Cena used it towards the Rock.

    • Dean

Cracked overdid it. Mad Magazine beat them to the punch during the 1980s during an intro by stating that wrestlers are the best actors ever because they have ever convinced anyone that their preposterous routines are real. They then proceeded to do a few panels showing what various well-known films such as The Godfather would be like with wrestlers in the leads. Great stuff.

  • Art Weingartner

It was an angle dum dum. Best promo ever…but it was a work.

  • yzermantiis

It’s called entertainment for a reason. WWE still draws millions upon millions of viewers each week. More than most pro sports….they are obviously doing something right

  • Tha Rev’rend

That Evan Bourne / Sin Cara match was fucking INCREDIBLE!

    • dc

that was such a fucking disgrace i watched it on wwe.com and after it was over and i jusr sat there and was like what did i just see go watch their matches in aaa or in roh or japan then watch that piece of shit again . japan is where it’s at oh and chikara and ring of honor

    • A.C.

The WWE isn’t making Sin Cara too useful right now. I don’t see him going up against the biigger names like Cena and Orton. They’re just putting him up against the more ariel wrestlers (ie. Evan Bourne, Daniel Bryan, Chavo Guerrerro) I think it was a bad move to have him on their roster because one trick ponies like Cena and Orton want to stick to routine and wouldn’t risk doing a flip or two just to avoid an injury. If he does go up against them, I’d say it be a couple of years.

  • Wayn

IT’S STILL REAL TO ME, DAMMIT!!!!

  • Douche baggins

Did someone just say they like wrastling more than the “realism” of the UFC? Cute.

    • Howie

      What;s wrong with that?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

some people prefer theater. it’s not a bad thing.

    • bobby hayes

its hilarious when the mma kidz talk smack on wrestling for just “being a bunch of oiled up dudes in tights rolling around” but theres about 10000000% more of that in mma than any wrestling company

      • nick

I used to really enjoy Pride Fighting for the simple fact that it was all about the fights and not the drama. I stopped watching when I lost my descrambler after a move then a few years later I find it’s UFC that’s on top. That shit is trash made by trash for trash.

  • Sandman

two things that would tell anyone watching it was at least a worked shoot:

    1) when CM Punk turned to talk about breaking the fourth wall, the camera just happened to be in the right moment and focused on him to capture that

    2) USA or whoever does the edits edited out douchebags, if they didn’t know what he was saying, how could they edit the word? Yes, I know about delays but that was a very clean edit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Will-Breen/1371272524 Will Breen

Wrestling shows almost always have multiple camera shoots, so it’s not entirely unreasonable that a camera would be there, and TV censors are trained to have quick hands with edits. Not saying it wasn’t a work, but I am saying that, if it was, the way they worked with the standard way a wrestling show is shot was absolutely genius – and I hate wrestling.

  • Chip

No way that was a shoot. Not only did they not cut his mic off, Raw went over a few minutes. Plus, every wrestler commenting on this praised him. Why would they risk their job like that? I’m glad it’s a work, though. That means that WWE is actually trying for a decent storyline.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Stamopoulos/575083326 Steven Stamopoulos

CM Punk had a move called the pepsi-plunge which was basically a hardcore pedigree off the turnbuckle.

then it was banned in the wwe. cos triple h
    coincidence?

  • asdasda

CM Punk has kickass theme music

    • A.C.

Oh yeah…Killswitch Engage is totally kickass. (In my sarcastic tone)

  • Douche baggins

A soap opera for men! Manly men!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Gellen/1491548640 Shawn Gellen

Dude, i cant tell you how much i marked out after seeing that. Punk has already been my favorite dude on any program beside Daniel Bryan for some time now. He’s crazy sweet, and this worked shoot was the best once i’ve seen since Heyman mouthed off to Vince before the Summerslam during the invasion thingy.

  • Animesh

This was brilliant. Can’t wait for the Summer Of Punk!

  • kannibalholocaust

    Landphil still watches WWF ?

  • boogers

how dare CM Punk use the word “WRESTLING” on WWE television

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jose-Rodriguez-III/1435762004 Jose Rodriguez III

CM Punk single-handedly saved the WWE from becoming a wasteland of crappy talent and “entertainment”. I mean, look what they’ve done to the guy; while he’s been busting his ass for five years, guys like Cena and Orton suck McMahon’s cock and get lengthy title reigns and spots on late night TV.

  • Evil Ernie

Even if what Punk was saying about the McMahons, HHH, etc is true, the most interesting part to me was where he called out the fans (even those cheering for him) for supporting the crappy product. It is here that we see that Punk’s comments inevitably become part of the product, which can then be cut and re-cut by WWE to their liking. I am inclined to agree that it was a well constructed worked shoot. Everything about it, from the camera angles to Punk’s subsequent suspension all point to this.

Interestingly, this is only the third time I can recall where references to other active wrestling promotions were allowed on WWE TV (the other two being Matt Hardy being arrested and shouting, “See you in Ring of Honor” [or something like that], and Ric Flair bringing the NWA title belt out, even though that particular design is still in use).

    • d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

I believe at one point (1997?), the WWF even had a working relationship with the ECW guys.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jose-Rodriguez-III/1435762004 Jose Rodriguez III

they sure did. ECW was WWE’s farm system for many years, that’s how they always ended up with guys like Al Snow and Justin Credible.

      • Evil Ernie

True enough, but as was mentioned, ECW and WWE had a working relationship. WWE is affiliated with either ROH nor NJPW.

what is going on here- this is a metal site,

do people not realize that these wrestling dudes are actors? that’s spelled A-C-T-O-R-S.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Robson/1375985482 Ben Robson

everybody knows they’re actors. people are commenting on how this seems like it may not have been acting, or that even if it was all planned out ahead of time, how it affects the storyline of WWE. pro wrestling is not intellectual entertainment, for sure, but neither is most metal, so, meh.

      • Evil Ernie

There is a good deal of academic literature which exists on pro wrestling (and metal too). Some of which was written by yours truly.

    • Evil Ernie

And GWAR are actually space aliens.

  • http://Vertebrae33.com Rodney

Sorry man…it was a complete work. There were aspects of it that they let have leeway on but…it is based in reality because of his contract ending but not a shoot at all…you need to get the observer and listen to the radio shows to get real info

  • miamisnuff

cm punk got fired for being honest and saying what was on he’s mind. screw you wwe!

Worked or not, what CM Punk said was true. He is by far one of the best wrestlers to ever step in the ring. I was so happy when he mentioned ROH

  • http://www.easttexasunderground.net DaylightReckoning

It is my sincere hope that Punk just takes some time off and comes back in a few months refreshed and ready to action. Whether in ring or on a mic, there’s never a boring moment when he’s onscreen. I’d pretty much be left with Daniel Bryan to watch on Smackdown otherwise.

  • Carnage

and things like this is why I am a die hard rasslin fan of 25 years !! Metal plus rasslin, life is goood
