TRAILER FOR MASTODON’S THE HUNTER! A WHOLE SOLID MINUTE OF NEW MUSIC!

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011 at 1:30pm by

Last week Mastodon broke out the cover art for their new album, The Hunter; now they’ve released a one-minute trailer for the album, which is one complete minute of a new song, “Black Tongue.” Man, Brent Hinds is way into weird tongues, huh?

And I gotta say, it sounds fucking awesome to me. Maybe you won’t dig it if you’re still hoping that the band is gonna go back to their Remission sound, but that would make you dumb, ’cause that ain’t gonna happen. For those of us who appreciate how the band has matured over the years (even if they can’t really pull the vocals off live), well… doesn’t this rock?

The Hunter is supposed to be out sometime in October.

Thanks to Jon for the tip!

Why did my brain instantly hear that line as read by Christopher Walken?

      True say though.

I approve of this massage of the senses!

  • The Uncool Guy Down The Hall

Due to the metal nerd newness to popularity ratio, this must suck. I’m going to go listen to some Panera now.

Listen to some Beyond Bread while you’re at it, troll.

        This should be enshrined somewhere.

          I love Reinventing the Meal!

Oh! which album from “Panera?” I like “Reinventing the Sweet Rolls” but i think “Vulgar Display of Panini” is my all time favorite.
oh god, the way you spelled Pantera has got you royally fucked, my friend. xD

  • Nonsensei

I hate these teaser snippets. Just release a damn song.

  • Ole

    I FUCKING DIG IT!

  • SourDeez

I’ve never been so….aroused….by one minute of a song. It sounds like they’re keeping up the progressive thing but it definitely sounds more metal than most of Crack the Skye.

  • Jon

    You’re welcome!

  • B-dizzle

Dug it more than Crack the Skye.

    More music like Deathbound though!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Sterner/1335958279 Andrew Sterner

This. Sounds like a good song, but deathbound was want I REALLY want from them.

  • http://jimsfear.blogspot.com/ ferocious_fetus

that 1 minute sounds better than all of Crack the Skye. Thank God.

    • Jewers

Agreed, Crack the Skye was noodily wanker balls ass.

        noodily wanker balls ass.

        • Sam

I don’t get all the hate on Crack the Skye. It may not be my favorite from them, but after some time apart I can come back to it and say it’s a damn good record.

  • gloriousjohnson

I’m down. LETS FUCKIN’ DO THIS!

  • http://www.thejamminjabber.com thejamminjabber

    I hear the Zeppelin. Riffy.

  • Bastard Samurai

This is Mastodon on a diet. Where the fuck is the heavy?

    • steal.money.for.drugs

that’s exactly what i was thinking.
i don’t need my mastodon to be unapologetic and screamingly heavy, but mastodon’s music has never sounded this poppy and happy.
maybe they don’t have anything to be angry about anymore?

      • stu1

You really hear “poppy and happy” in here??

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Pearl-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Pearl Nutter

Not hearing poppy and happy. I’m hearing lots of melody, but it’s definitely not happy, and I don’t expect them to be played on Top 40 radio any time soon.

        • stu1

Totally. A comment from another “i liked them back when” dipshit.

      • Planeswalker

God damn you hipsters, Mastodon can do whatever the fuck they want, because they’re Mastodon. Get over it.

  • Jewers

The vocals in this song song like Maynard James Keenan.

    • Jewers

      *sound

  • Aether Jake

I feel like if this song wasn’t by mastodon, no one would give a fuck, but whatever. Not a bad song.

    • emeyer

you’re right. no one would, because its only 1 minute of a song. But, since its mastodon, people give a shit because these dudes constantly put out awesome music, so 1 minute, is a nice tease. People are loving this one minute but want more. You, on the other hand, have already made your judgement on the whole song after hearing only 1 minute. So, looks like you’re the jackass here.

      • Aether Jake

        y u mad?

      • Darth Mammogram

  • Kyle

Man, that clip is really fantastic! I’m envisioning a sort of Black Album type feel for this record in the sense that it will be more straightforward and accessible than their previous material, but still having a ballsier sound and cleaner production. Whether it becomes a global phenomenon and inspires the band to cut their hair and start wearing mascara has yet to be determined.

    • stu1

That’s been my thought for a while.

    • Sam

God forbid the mascara and hair cuts happen. But I kinda agree on the musical equivalent part.

    • The Ghost With The Most

LOL….the words “Black Album” and “ballsier” in the same sentence……LOL

“Video unavailable in Germany because YouTube is full of a bunch of twits.”

    DAMMIT!

  • Shawn

I was thinking Opeth + Tool the whole way through that clip. Definitely going to be more of a Black Album deal than a Remission II, but after that clip, I’m soooooooo alright with that.

    • 110101

now that you mention it, i hear it too

    • Planeswalker

The Tool feel is definitely there. Which is kickass.

  • Igottawocket

That’s easily the cruelest one minute teaser ever. Sounds like such an awesome fucking song. Any worries I had about this album are completely gone. It’s a completely different sound from their previous work vocally but I love it. The music still sounds Mastodon-y but somehow different from anything before. So excited now.

  • Andrew

    Yawn.

Mastodon’s set at Sonisphere this weekend was like a runaway freight train stocked with herds of killer whales. They’ve not sounded that heavy and hungry since the first time I saw them in 04. I agree that their vocals can be totally hit and miss, but dude, they totally nailed it this weekend.

I was hoping for a new track, but they didn’t roll one out. They just stuck to crusher after crusher. I’m salivating for the new stuff, even though I’m not so into the cover artwork so far.

  • Douche baggins

You assholes are making me hungry. Also, that link is not working for me.

  • Kye

Can I preorder the $500 special edition that comes with a handjob yet? I do so enjoy their special editions.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Pearl-Nutter/1418565949 Austin Pearl Nutter

I just hope Troy has some screams on this album. There were like none on Crack the Skye. Fantastic album, that’s just one thing I missed.

    • Gipson

Yeah, overall the vocals weren’t as aggressive from these guys as I like, but Troy’s screams on “Crack the Skye” (the song) are devastating. Saw them play it live on the Dethklok/Mastodon tour, and Troy damn near hurt himself on the final verse. Raw as hell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Perez/1360873001 Alex Perez

Yeah he does Scott Kelly’s portion of the song great justice!

  • uLy

    Dgging it hard.

  • Darth Mammogram

I’m stoked. The new Toxic Holocaust records is gonna kick ass. The new Skeletonwitch record is gonna kick ass. This new Mastodon album will more than likely KICK ASS! Now I’m just waiting to see what the new Behemoth music post-leukemia will sound like…

  • brookh

Brent Hinds can’t write a bad song

  • ACoffinShip

I’m liking it. I haven’t really disliked any of their other shit, but that snippet sounded more like a swift kick in the ass and less like Crack the Skye. Again, not that Crack the Skye was bad, but I’d love to see the more energetic side of Mastodon again.

  • NikkiDixx

this shit and deathbound reminds me of bloodmountain. which is a good thing, cause its their best album.

    • Kazz

      I agree.

  • uLy

i can’t stand the constant Tool comparisons… everyone sounds like Tool these days apparently.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Bell/100000194349639 Patrick Bell

Loving it! Why wait until October though? Surely it’s only for hype?

    • stu1

You know there’s a thing called “setting up an album,” right?

  • Chimp-O-Neg

I like it, and I like that the lyric is from Ministry’s Stigmata too.

    Nice.

    • nil

Chimp-O-Neg: Yeah, that lyric did sound strangely familiar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kyle-Nipp/703436346 Kyle Nipp

I just got a massive stiffee.

  • Jon

The double-picking and solo harmonies remind me a little of Baroness.

  • msv81

This band is an overrated pile of shit. That clip sounded horrendous. If Mastodon’s name weren’t attached to it, everyone here would agree with me. The album will be worse than CTS; it’d be best for everyone if they just stopped making music.

    • BossBrew

The trailer sounded good to me. Did you know people have opinions? Just thought I should let you know.

  • Adam

Mastodon hasn’t been interesting to me since Leviathan, and even barely there.

I’m convinced this band sucks unless you’re stoned out of your tree. If you have to be high to enjoy a band, then they just are not very good.
