NEW MASTODON! “BLACK TONGUE!” FULL SONG! LISTEN NOW, YOU FOOLS!!!

Monday, July 25th, 2011 at 2:14pm by

A couple of weeks ago, Mastodon released a teaser for their new album, The Hunter, which featured a full minute of a new song, “Black Tongue” — and it seems like the entire MetalSucks community more or less agreed that the song sounded AWESOME.

Well, guess what? Someone has stuck a radio rip of the song on the internet, which means you can listen to the full thing right now.

And guess what else? The full version doesn’t disappoint. Looks like The Hunter is gonna be yet ANOTHER amazing Mastodon release. How the hell do these guy do it?

MAJOR thanks to Stephen Parker for the tip!

Mastodon is just that band that will do what they want and we mere mortals will just enjoy every bit of it.

  • tytan

meh song, unfortunately :/ Maybe it would make sense when listened on full album.

      TROLL.

      • Matt

I’m pretty sure that’s not really a “troll” comment as more of an “opinion” comment

      • Gipson

Especially when the alleged troll even offers conditions that would improve the song, i.e. hearing it in the context of the full album.

    • The Crouch Pouch
    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tristan-Zemtseff/1122873053 Tristan Zemtseff

I agree with you (though maybe not so far as “meh”, but I think it’ll be better in album context. That’s how these things work anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Kruk/520503461 Josh Kruk

Fuck yes. Great tune. Combo of all their styles but with a new touch. Long live Mastodon

  • emeyer

good to see brann’s drumming is still killer

  • CJ

This fucking slays. Sounds like they finally found the balance between their early metal craziness and their proggy hoo-hah.

  • Zsa Zsa Gabor’s amputated leg used as a dildo and a bludgeon to beat people to death with

Love it. It’s got an ominous vibe to it.

Disappointing, hopefully it sounds better on the album.

  • Butcher

    Ha-ha!
My link waking in internet =)))

  • jon from nj

    Hands down…awesome.

  • Jewers

Love every part of it except the vocals, they sound almost strained.

    • RattMoleMAn

I completely agree. Imagine how much more strained they’ll sound live……

  • B-RAD IS RAD

    i like the vocals

    • Brendan

Duuude, your name is solid! Love Workaholics.

Also, this song is really interesting, I’m super stoked for the rest of the album.

  • Frotch

i think i’d probably like it more if brent sang.

  • SourDeez

I gotta say, even as a huge Mastodon fan I didn’t expect their new shit to be this good. Brann Dailor murdered this track and then raped its corpse.

  • Vlad

    Meh… drums are great though

  • Ray Peterson212

    blah.

  • Shawn

    Doesn’t work for me…

  • Joebroni

Killer song but Troy is going to have a hell of a time pulling these vocals off live.

    • slapguitarer

Yeah, that’s the first thing that came to mind when I heard ‘em. I love the song though.

  • http://www.schenkeltown.com SchenkelTown

I wonder if that weird shit at the end is actually part of the song or just got onto sound cloud somehow.

    • James

      …Really?

    • Frank

The weird shit at the end is some swedish girl saying something. Probably part of the radio show this song was ripped from, so no, it’s not going to be in the song.

  • krallice challice

the worst song on remission is still better than this

    • Metalguy

Are you implying Remission is bad? Because the worst songs on Remission are better than the best songs on most albums

      • Kuranes

        I don’t think he’s implying that.

      • Heffer

You serious dogg? Remission is sloppy as hell. There’s a few nice sections here and there but overall: negative.

        TL;DR: You have shitty taste.

        • Andrew Lusby

Remission is sloppy? lol its sludge not tech death

  • Fucker

Mastodon really blow,I really tried to get into them but they just bore the fuck out of me.

    • stu1

The world needs people who listen to crap music, too, so you’re ok.

    • Derek Petersen

      go away.

    • The_I

I wouldn’t say that they blow, but I’ve never been able to like Mastodon as much as I’m supposed to. It’s just boring to me.

  • darkdragon

    Didn’t like the vocals.

  • D

all their instrumentation is fucking spot on but their voices recorded are not within their capabilities to perform live. good song though

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brendan-McGregor/1179450011 Brendan McGregor

      * sad but truuuagh

  • msv81

So much great music gets overlooked and this band gets their collective cock stroked from 90% of the people on this site for writing boring ass music they can’t even pull off live. Ehh, nobody said life’s fair…

    • BDS

you make a song better than this then pussy

    • Wango Tango

Apparently great music does get overlooked, because a lot of the bands featured on this site really blow. However, Mastodon isnt one of them, and this song is awesome.

    • Driven9

I like their songs, and shit sounds good on record, but fuck if Mast’s vocals dont sound worse evertime i see them…

i srsly dont understand how bands like ATR get ripped apart but Mastodon gets a pass on shitass live vocals.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pat-Arriola/100002131340820 Pat Arriola
      • stu1

People ALWAYS talk about their vocals live. Pay attention and don’t be an ATR fanboy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jesse-Radon/1099286815 Jesse Radon

Saw them play Crack The Skye twice, and both times, the vocals sounded great. Maybe a fuck up or flat harmony here and there, but otherwise, spot on. I think everyone who talks shit on their live vocals have seen the same three or four Youtube videos, and then pretend they’re in the know.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Daniel/1012473332 Shawn Daniel

They used to be one of those “overlooked” bands too. The boys have worked hard over the years and get success for writing good music. Why not eh?

  • Kuranes

It kind of bothers me how much I like this. It makes me feel so mainstream. Ah well, maybe I’ll go burn a Lamb of God t-shirt to make myself feel better.

    • Metalish

      Grow up

      • Dirtman73

Burning a Lamb of God t-shirt is a part of every immature young boy’s initiation process into adulthood. That, and no longer shopping at Hot Topic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Pat-Arriola/100002131340820 Pat Arriola

      lol Hipsters.

      • Kuranes

Oh my god… all this time I thought I was a metal elitist… and it turns out I’M REALLY A HIPSTER!!!!

        NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • B

Just me or does this sound vaguely like Tool mixed with a little bit of Ride the Lightning-era Metallica? I wish Troy were still singing (hate Brent’s voice), but I still dig.

    • B

Some people are saying this actually is Troy singing. Sounds more like Brent to me… either way I miss the vocals of the first two albums.

      • M. Thomas Steele

It’s definitely Troy singing. How do you people not know the difference?

        • B

His voice used to sound much more aggressive, so that’s what I think of as his voice.

    • Mongorian

      Clearly Troy bro

  • Igottawocket

That was fucking awesome. Damn. I can see why they released that one section with the preview video, that section is unbelievably incredible. Love the rest of the framework of the song around it now. They’re announcing some big news tonight too at like 9 or something so excited as to what that is…

  • Tyler

    Troy is singing on this..

  • Matt

I hear some choursy guitar riffs that remind of Leviathan a bit (around the 1:20-1:50 mark before the main hook riff).

I think this cd will be solid but you’ll have to be open to the changes Mastodon has went through to enjoy it

  • Paul

Love it. Dailor is just killing it. But pulling these vocals live…not gonna happen.

  • Andrew

That song would be great if the vocals didn’t sound so strained.

  • this is not carlos

    I really like this

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tiago-Bettencourt/881195322 Tiago Bettencourt

OMG; what is happening with Mastodon, i hope this is one of the worst songs on the album, it needs to be!not really liking the vocals nor the guitar tone!he only thing that saves this song is the riff that begins at 1.50.

i ussualy dont give a shit, but mastodon’s one of my fav bands!
    kinda sad..

    • stu1

Not sure how they can be one of your favorites and you don’t like this. I can see being really into Remission and not liking this, but if you’re a fan of all their output, this is essentially a mixture of stuff.

  • Ira Siegel

Great tune. Oh, and I hate when people use “meh” to describe stuff.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Caleb-McMahen/100000515986822 Caleb McMahen

      This.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sam-Payne/100000778007368 Sam Payne

Brann Dailor held this song together for me, just like he does with most Mastodon songs.

  • wcshelton

Not thier best song, but i like it.

  • Rusty McThulhu

its not as exciting as I was expecting but its solid. Good vocals

  • Sam

So badass. These dudes just make good music.

  • EmpireOfDestruction

Mastodon as always brilliant !!!! :D Such a good tune.If this song is brilliant then the album is going to be perfection ! Mastodon rules !

  • ChuggaChuggaDeedlyDoo

Not what I was expecting, but I dig it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Gellen/1491548640 Shawn Gellen

So fucking happy! sounds kinda like Blood Mountain to me but with better vocal quality recording. Although i do agree, id like to hear some other vocals that just Troy on that song. Im happy. Cant wait to hear what it ends up sounding like as a hole….and sides….to everyone else getting butthurt about this song….. New Baroness album is gonna kick this ones ass anyways, DUUUUUUUH!

    • Workhorse

      +1
Baroness are shitting all over these guys lately. Crack the Skye was great for about the first 3 or 4 months after its release. Meanwhile, Blue Record is still getting heavy rotation from me 2 years on. And this is coming from a massive Mastodon fanboy who has spent the last 5 years running around telling everyone how great these guys are. After the ridiculously awesome Deathbound, and their amazing set at Sonisphere I assumed they might be bringing back the heavy stuff, but nope; more lame mid-paced trudging in the vein of Oblivion. I really, really hope this isn’t indicative of what the new album sounds like as a whole.

      • Matt

Baroness put on a sick live show as well. When I saw mastodon and baroness together, baroness stole the show (but in all fairness that was when Mastodon was having issues with Bill and was absent)

    • Rick Dick Tickler

I’m looking more forward to Baroness’ new album than Mastodon’s anyway.
      The song was decent though

  • http://www.thejamminjabber.com thejamminjabber

That Norwegian bitch says something about a “fiasco” at the end.

  • Dan

It’s a good song. And when listened to something like Deathbound, I see them reverting to a more ‘Remission’-y sound on this coming album. Brent even said that they just want to have fun on this album. And I’m totally in favour of it. I personally love the way Mastodon keep you guessin’.

  • Sporadicazmatic

anyone know where i can hear/download this song?? It’s off of soundcloud now and everywhere else i look, like youtube and mediafire and shit, its been pulled becauise of music rights.. If i find it, ill throw a link on here, but, if someone has it, can you throw up a DL link or somewhere thats streaming it at least… i really wanna hear this thing… thanks….

    ……Piss.

  • http://smilingdoom.com Doomsayer General

They’re clearly intent on continuing to challenge themselves in the vocal department, so it’s probably going to sound off live just like the Crack the Skye stuff does. I think it’s great they’re pushing their boundaries though, the records are the better for it. It’s worth sub-par live vox here and there if you ask me (and you didn’t). Besides, if they keep it up they’re bound to adjust and improve.

Anyway, this sounds pretty fucking great. Not sure I understand why it would disappoint anyone who liked the last one.

  • Sporadicazmatic

    http://bit.ly/q5pfJv

    just a stream of it

  • Jonas

This song is AWESOME :D Love the vocals, the drumming, the guitar work, everything! btw, the song is also avalible on Spotify if you havn’t noticed it yet..

  • Fish

I like it,, but the vocals sound like Gene Simmons.

  • esteban

The vocals remind me of ZZ Top lol. Song is so hot I think I’m crushing on it.

  • Rocko

    Song. Kicks. Ass.

  • Narrrr

Listened about 10 times now trying to make myself like it, still pretty disappointied tbh. Wasnt going to comment but Mastodon are one of my favorite bands (A band can still be one of your favorites even if you dont jerk off over every single thing they do. Some of you need to grow up). Like someone else has said above, i hope this is the worst off the new album. Its not bad, but its just not as memorable as their other stuff.

  • douchetouche

The guitar sounds reminded me of the Haunted made me do it.
    I liked it

  • JM

    RIP Mastodon (1999 – 2005)

  • Beowulf

Wouldn’t let me load it on here for some reason so I just went to YouTube, I gotta say it was fucking awesome! Most comments are negative, I just don’t see how you can’t like this. Only complaint is that it seemed too short, still awesome though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rafael-Rodrigues-Rezende/682933353 Rafael Rodrigues Rezende

    That sounds promising!!

  • Buckaroo

Cool to hear new Mastadon, and a nice instructional video to boot!

  • Fred Durst

    Good, but not great.

  • wordMCface

Gotta love the vitriol in this thread. If you are listening to Mastodon for vocals, I think you are completely missing the point. They are playing cool music for cool peeps. Not for fgts that are concerned with semantics.

So go stroke the skinflute of all those “Geetar heros” and “American Idols” with their sick vocals and technical technicalities, because you fgts are missing the point entirely.

And apparently Lamb of God is the new Slipknot? LOL. Hipsters? Where do you fgts come from YO?, Ethernet-mall-otron-ville?

Song is Beast. Now we all know how to make an eyeball out of microballons.
