EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: ACOUSTIC VERSION OF SIXX A.M.’S “LIES OF THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE”

Let us not speak too poorly of the legandary: Axl and Vince saw Motley Crue in Long Island the other night and had a helluva time. The Crue still know how to put on a highly entertaining live show, even if Tommy Lee’s ridiculously awesome drum rollercoaster was punctuated by cringe-inducing shouts of “yeeeeahh, bitch!” And there’s no denying the staying power of Motley Crue’s immense catalog.

But when it comes to actual new music, there’s no question that Sixx A.M.’s recent output easily bests that of the Crue. Debut album The Heroin Diaries was a rock-opera-ish affair that was one of the best hard rock albums of 2007, if not the decade; while this year’s follow-up This Is Gonna Hurt doesn’t pack quite the same punch it’s still a really good listen that’s several orders of magnitude better than the Crue-trying-to-sound-like-Crue attempt of “Saints of Los Angeles.” Anything Nikki Sixx writes with his Sixx A.M. partners James Michael and DJ Ashba these days is heads and shoulders above what he writes with Neil, Mars and Lee, whatever the reason may be.

Sixx A.M.’s collective songwriting is so solid that even the acoustic version of “Lies of the Beautiful People” rocks hard. Check out the world premiere below.

Didn’t DJ Ashba write the bulk of SOLA? I might be wrong.

Feel free to criticise recent Motley Crue output – I wasn’t all that excited by New Tattoo or Saints of Los Angeles. I felt both had some merit, but neither was particularly special or particularly spirited. However, don’t blame Nikki’s retarded bandmates whilst crediting the Sixx AM trio with being songwriting masterminds 24/7. Sixx AM did the bulk of the work producing, writing, engineering and mixing the last Crue album, as well as a little of the performance.

Full (TL;DR this shit) details below:

New Tattoo: 6 of the 10 original songs were co-written by James Michael

Red White & Crue: Of the 2 original songs on this compilation, 1 was co-written by James Michael. So was “I’m A Liar (And That’s the Truth)” from the Japanese edition, and that’s the best Motley Crue song in the last decade. He also provided background vocals on all three tracks.

Saints of Los Angeles: Sixx/Michael/Ashba, with songwriter Marti Frederiksen were responsible for 7 songs on this album. Mick Mars joined them to help write 5 songs, and lastly “This Ain’t a Love Song” is credited to Sixx/Mars/Michael/Frederiksen with Tommy Lee. James MIchael produced the album, whilst Nikki Sixx and DJ Ashba co-produced it (in this instance, Sixx qualifies as a member of Sixx AM, as his only experience producing for Crue outside of this was co-producing Generation Swine). James Michael joins in as a vocalist for the gang vocal on “Saints of Los Angeles”, as well as taking the lead role in the engineering and mixing of the album. DJ Ashba also assisted on the engineering front.

CrueFest DVD: James Michael was responsible for the audio mix (Stereo & 5.1)

Greatest Hits: Concludes with a James Michael remix of “The Animal In Me”

On a related note, James Michael also co-wrote “Another Bady Day” with Nikki Sixx, Tracii Guns and Kevin Kadish – it was one of the two original songs on Vince Neil’s recent album Tattoos & Tequila.
