OPETH ENTER “THE DEVIL’S ORCHARD”

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 at 11:54am by

In case that new Mastodon tune that debuted yesterday wasn’t enough to make your panties wet, now we have new Opeth, too — the song is called “The Devil’s Orchard,” and you can check it out below.

As we’ve been hearing, it’s not quite as metal as Opeth’s most famous material, which is to say, there’s no screaming, and the music, while still proggy as hell, is not especially aggro. That being said, I happen to think it’s swell, metal or not.

Opeth’s new album, Heritage, comes out September 16 on Roadrunner.

I think it’s metal in like the traditional sense, either way it’s fucking awesome as expected. I was reading something about them on Blabbermouth and every comment was negative towards them, how can people NOT like Opeth?? Wtf. Haha

  • Gormlet

This is very refreshing. I felt like Watershed was kinda “same old”

  • Jewers

    Groovy.

  • bucketochicken

    Wow. Stunning.

  • You Don’t Know Me

I’m digging it. The opening guitar riff is a bit “proggy-for-prog’s-sake” but I’m digging it. I’m actually enjoying the lack of death vocals. I’ve always felt that was their weakest trait about them.

    • It’s Not Safe To Swim Today

Agreed. I can’t stand his death metal vocals. I much prefer Opeth’s softer side, even to the point of only liking those songs.

      • slaytanic_mechanic

i dunno about that, his vocals with bloodbath are insane.

      • balls

I think you bitches are trippin’. The reason Opeth is Opeth is because of the death vocals contrasted against the non death vocals. The other part is the same juxtaposition (I hate using that word) with the heavy distorted guitar against the acoustic parts. The contrast is felt that much more because the light makes the dark seems even darker, and the dark making the light that much more ethereal.

        • Trux

I , for one, also like more the non-death metal vocals than the death metal ones.

Mikael`s death vox is great but his clean vocals are even more greater.

        • Andrew

I completely agree. Blackwater Park was probably my favorite album, their newer stuff is all kind of hit and miss to me.

        • The_I

I think you hit the nail on the head. That being said, I’ve always felt like their stronger suit as musicians is in clean vocals and guitars. To me, the most memorable passages in your average Opeth song are expressed through clean guitar and such.

        • Ross

I agree, his death and clean vocals are both amazing. Just listen to his screaming on DTP’s “Stand” They add so much depth along with the choir and perhaps Devin’s vocals in there? (Can’t tell because there is so much going on in that part of the song). I will say though, I feel the same with those below me when it came to Katatonia switching up their vocal stylings.

    • Kyle

Agreed. I think Opeth is great, but Mikael’s death growls have always been the thing that kept me from absolutely loving them. Sometimes it just grates my ears.

  • chris

this reminds me of nickelback ! im really excited for this!

    • Driven9

      hahh nice.

    • Darth Mammogram

      #trollwin

  • Jacob

    I’d hit that.

  • Strapping Young Lad

Well that was sweet! I’m really looking forward to this… Burden hinted that they could do some really cool 70′s style prog, so it should be exciting to hear a whole album like that… I will miss the death growls though!

  • Android

This is exactly what I was hoping for from this album. Absolutely jaw-dropping.

  • Chimp-O-Neg

Sounding good so far. I like the new direction. There’s already plenty of heavy Opeth in existence, so plenty of room for new experimentation.

  • Dingas McCloud

oh man, this melted my face. haunting and awesome.

  • Johnny

interesting guitar tone, diggin the tune tho

  • a.c.

When I was listening to certain sections, I thought of Ghost. Surely, that’s just me. But if they took that whole “Dark-Happy-Satanic” approach, it would be so appropriate for the band. The lyrics are dark as fuck and using only clean vocals is ironically fitting. Sign me up for a vinyl and compact disc copy of this badass mudder fucker because the themes are selling me.

Not just you, same happened here. First Pain Of Salvation, then Ghost, and now Opeth seems to join the 70′s waggon.
I love Opeth, but it’s going to take a few spins for me to get into this waggon as well..

  • Dubs

Jesus, so much new stuff streaming this week. I’m glad I got the day off.

  • Noel

WAY better than I thought it would be. I am now excited for this album.

  • Workhorse

This is miles better than yesterday’s new Mastodon. While I love Mikael’s death growls, Damnation is one of my favourite Opeth albums, and I’ve always loved tracks like Face of Melinda and To Bid You Farewell, so I had total confidence in them when they announced the stylistic shift. I’m so happy that they’ve fulfilled my expectations here; Watershed always seemed like a transitional album (even down to the name), and this proves that that was indeed the case. I’ve got my expanded edition already ordered!

  • Kuranes

Sounds awesome. Listen to this back-to-back with Morningrise… what a progression. I like it all though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Kruk/520503461 Josh Kruk

Great tune. Definitely a step forward as opposed to spinning their wheels. Good few months for metal coming up

  • mush

it’s being taken down from youtube

  • meemperor

    Bonerific.

  • bryno

I like it, not blown away but that might require multiple listens. I’m glad not to see a bunch of bitching and moaning as most of the comments are positive. It’s tough when a band evolves, their bound to leave some fans behind, but I like the direction that Opeth seems to be heading.

  • http://thenumberoftheblog.com/ groverXIII

The YouTube version has been taken down, but I snagged an embed from The Gauntlet that’s still active: http://thenumberoftheblog.com/2011/07/26/oh-my-fuck-new-opeth/

  • Igottawocket

I can’t believe I’m saying this because I freaking LOVE Opeth and was in complete full support of them making an album without the death vocals and them staying true to the music they wanted to make but… Upon first listen, I did not like that. And it really, really pains me to say that, because I don’t want to be “that guy.” But the drumming, to me, way pulled me out of the “vibe” of the song, it seemed kind of beatless and all over the place for all over the places sake. Then I really hate saying this because I love Mikaels clean vocals but the song felt to me to be begging for death growls in places.
I really hope it’s just first impressions of the song and it’ll grow on me or in the framework of the rest of the album will make sense (like Porcelain Heart was released as a single) or I just didn’t get the full song from my shitty iPod speaker. Praying my mind is changed because not liking an Opeth song sucks….

    • Igottawocket

Well listening on my computer speakers now and…. totally ignore everything I just said. Sounds fucking awesome. Never had such a difference from speakers before. Loving it now. Crazy, just first listen to second listen….

  • Anthony

Me and my friend always debate on who’s better, Opeth vs. Dream Theater. Regardless of our arguments, the fact that I argue that Opeth is better means that I win all the time.

    • Kazz

      Truth.

      • darkdragon

Normally I’d say Opeth is better no contest but with the changing of their sound and vocals and Dream Theather staying the same, I think Dream Theater is better now since they give you want you want and now Opeth are more interested in experimenting.

        • Johnny Blaze

Better a band do what they feel is right than keep rehashing the same old crap. Besides, Mike’s signature Opeth DM sound has gotten waaay stale.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-J-Henningsgard/1024517365 Steven J. Henningsgard

‘I think Dream Theater is better now since they give you want you want and now Opeth are more interested in experimenting.”

          Please tell me you’re joking.

Fucking awesome. Very 70′s prog rock, King Crimson-y and my god that drumming!

Anyone know a link where I can download it?

Anyone who got here late (like me – now that YouTube has pulled it) go to this link, it’s up there also: http://youtu.be/CZt9wXhBLsE

I hope you realize that’s a fake, as it says in the title.

      • hATE-eR

I wasn’t sure what that meant to be honest – anyway, I guess I’ll have to wait. YouTube sucks…!

Try listening to the song first before becoming a judgemental jackass.

      • Aether Jake

Try listening to the song first before hopping on Mikael’s dick. It might be your thing, but it certainly isn’t mine. I think a small part of me was still hoping for Ghost Reveries pt. 2.

    Opethupine Tree? Porcupeth? …

I like the song, but it’s going to take some time for me to wrap my head around the fact that one of the bands that was primarily responsible for getting me into the “darker” side of metal is no longer on the brutality bandwagon.

Oh well… I’m still looking forward to seeing them live this fall with Katatonia.

    • BAWITDABADABANGADANGDIGGYDIGGYDIGGYSEDDABOOGYSEDUPJUMPDABOOGY

Lololol Porcupeth. I like that one.

And I’d be quite certain there’s more metal tracks on the album. You know how they are with diversity between tracks. Plus, I wouldn’t think Mikael would allow Opeth to change THAT much. He tends to keep each project separate from the other.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Danielle-Connolly/502668289 Danielle Connolly

        Long live Porcupeth!!

  • Skullkrusher

This sounds really good. Im looking forward to hearing this album. I’m wondering though, how can anybody dislike mikael’s growls? He roars like a fuckin bear!

  • Joe

This really isn’t anything new for Opeth at all. It’s pretty much the same writing style. What you think is different is really just the lack of heavy distortion and gutteral vocals. It’s still easy to separate the light and heavy parts on this song. He’s using a clean singing tone that has a little more grit during the heavier parts and the croon during the lighter spots.
To anyone saying Opeth are now just jumping on the 70s bandwagon: you apparently know nothing about this band.
I’m not blowing my load all over this song because it really isn’t too different from what they’ve done before. I’ll wait until the album comes out to decide if this is fantastic or Opeth still going through the motions, just with different guitar tones and no growling.

    • Joe

Oh, and Axe’s drumming is awesome. It’s like he thinks he’s still on a death metal album, which I think is great. It gives the song some depth and helps separate the heavy and light parts. It also furthers the notion that not much has changed.

  • pariah

There’s actually no growling at all on the new album. From Blabbermouth:

“We don’t use death growls, for example, in the new album, but it doesn’t mean we’re trying to get away from metal or anything like that.”

    Loving the new song!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farrukh-Nizam/843955047 Farrukh Nizam

Would surely love the new album

Looking forward to “Rocktember”, for sure.

  • metalhead616

    at least ‘god is dead’

  • Chris

I already like this 10x more than anything else I’ve heard by Opeth. I’ve never liked the screaming death metal side of Opeth — the prog rock side has always been what impressed me the most about them.

  • ghjkghjfj

i like it, but someone please, tell their drummer to stop overusing the double paradiddle! both axelrod and the previoud drummer, lopezi believe, use the double paradiddle technique in EVERY SONG lol great drummers, but fudge man damn.

  • errhurrr

Its still heavy in a proggy way like most probably already said, think modern-era Rush. But it really isn’t soft either like Damnation. So those fear that probably have nothing to fear from this initial track.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chad-Hayes/100000098038273 Chad Hayes

Awesome song! At first it sort of reminded me of Mikael’s side project Sorskogen that only released one song, but this song’s heavier. Can’t wait until September!

  • madne0

Not really feeling it i guess….

  • http://piercingmetal.com/wordpress PiercingMetal KP

I liked what I heard and really enjoy the fact that they keep pushing their creative envelope and don’t manage to distance or confuse fans like we sometimes find Queensryche doing with new releases. There is a cool heaviness to this and a big homage to the Progressive music of the 70′s that Akerfeldt loves so much. I am sure the whole album will be awesome and get some solid reviews.

  • Blut

I feel that the new song lacks dynamics, and just sounds like your generic 70s-prog/fusion jam, which would be fine if we weren’t talking about fucking Opeth. Whatever, I’ll give this a few more chances before making my final judgment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jamie-Chorley/100000163574786 Jamie Chorley

I Like it but it sounds like they recorded the guitars using a 10 watt practice amp

love it, but i’ll miss mike’s death vocals. he has my favorite scream, hands down.

  • Bobby DeNiro

I know these guys are great and all, but they just don’t do it for me. I would so much prefer a new BloodBath cd than an Opeth cd.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emmanuel-Quinones/100000463639580 Emmanuel Quinones

wow this is so lame/ dissapoint

  • Mike Is Awesome

Well this song sounds a little more old school which is the winning formula Opeth should use because Watershed was not a good album. I will disagree with people when they Mikael Akerfeldt does not have good screaming vocals to back himself up. I say he has some of the most recognizable screams in the industry and when he sings his voice makes angels weep. Opeth is an amazing band and I am looking forward to the new album very much.

The could record the sounds of themselves running over each others nuts with steamrollers and it would probably still make my pants tight.
    Opeth can do no wrong.
    -fangirl flail-

  • jdjd

so its essentially the same opeth as before just without growls. yawn at this point one would think alkerfeldt would hire outside writers to copy the sound like geoff tate of queensryche and axl rose of guns n roses.
