31 DAYS OF FAITH NO MORE: “LAND OF SUNSHINE”

Monday, August 1st, 2011 at 4:00pm by

Spurred by a lazy crossword clue in The Onion (36 down, four letters: “Faith No More’s only hit”), MetalSucks contributor Anso DF dedicates every single day in August to celebration and exploration of the San Francisco alt-metal greats. Here we prove that history’s greatest band landed more than one commercial hit (crossword answer: “Epic” natch), we revel in FNM’s embarrassing wealth of winning album tracks (themselves often fit for chart topping), and we dip into the staggering best of the b-sides (ditto). Along the way, we survey the context of FNM’s big break (amid comparably rad acts Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, and Ween) to post-Nevermind panic-based music commerce in which the brilliantly versatile, fearless powerhouse band operated until their 1998 demise. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Song ”Land Of Sunshine”

Written by Patton (L); Gould, Bottum (M)

Released 1992

Appears on Angel Dust album

Produced by Matt Wallace

Guitars by Jim Martin

Key lyric ”Do you feel sometimes that age is against you?”

Single? Yes, promo only (preceded by “Midlife Crisis” and followed by “A Small Victory”)

The climate As the opening track of Angel Dust, “Land Of Sunshine” welcomed listeners back to a now bleaker land of Faith No More, in which singer Mike Patton — fresh off recording and touring with Mr. Bungle — began to contribute more than just lyrics.

Awesome song elevated to supra-awesomeness by keyboardist Roddy Bottum’s vertiginous, carnivalesque arpeggios throughout the chorus, which underline the song’s — and the band’s — recurring thread that life is seasickness.

Didja know? According to Wikipedia, “Land”‘s lyrics were inspired by fortune cookies and a Church of Scientology questionnaire. Oh so that’s why Tom Cruise bumps this jam.

Ween?! Fuck yes. This is the best one a day post barrage ever.

    • gloriousjohnson

Agreed. I’d rather hear a Ween song everyday but i do that anyways..

  • namelessness

    Caralho Voador?

  • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Alkahest

Fuck yes, Faith No More. I hold the opinion that these guys are the best alt-rock band ever.

  • huntermc

Woo hoo, 31 days of FNM action. Then we can argue about the glaring omissions!

Here’s hoping that the Patton version of “As The Worm Turns” shows up somewhere in the b-sides. That one was good enough to be a single itself.

    • Chuckles

Damnit…you beat me to it. That song is awesome

Guess I gotta pull for “The Cowboy Song” or a collection of songs that Mike Patton adlibs into other songs

      • huntermc

Cowboy Song is another great one, too. As good as anything on Real Thing.

    Guitars by Jim Martin

are you sure about that? i once read he only recorded jizzlobber

    anyways, one of my favorites

    • Adam

I think he only wrote the music for Jizzlobber and the rest of the guitar parts on the album were written by the other guys. He recorded most of the guitar parts on the album.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mjllnir-Loudermilk/1237301216 Mjöllnir Loudermilk

I remember reading an interview where Jim said the entire album had been written and the keyboard, drum and bass tracks recorded before he even came into the studio for this album.

Driving my 2-year-old son to daycare, Angel Dust was in the CD player and this track started playing. At the end, the kid yells “AGAIN!” (This being the first time he had ever heard it.)
I obliged and replayed, and it ended just as we pulled into the parking lot, and he clapped and yelled “YAY!”

I feel that way every time I hear it, too.

    • jason

+1 for your son, +2 for you sir for excellent parenting

word. + make sure your son knows that you rocked killer mutton chops when he was 2.

      • Facebook User

Agreed! I believe Parent of the Year award should partially be based on teaching your kids to appreciate great music, and there’s nothing better than some FNM!

    • Facebook User

Erik, I also have trained all five of my children to appreciate everything Patton including Faith No More. That means they are the only kids in their classes that have any taste in music!

As far as the song goes, I actually wrote a blog about Faith No More and compared them to my job as a teacher, and I used this song’s lyrics and titled the blog “Land of Sunshine.” Awesome song! The blog is here if you’re interested; I think it might sum up the way a lot of FNM fans feel about the band. http://sosmtm.blogspot.com/2011/06/land-of-sunshine.html

  • TrucK

Thanks for making my Summer even more Summerry. Looking forward to your knowledge on “the best band in the world”. I’m going to sport my original Angel Dust tour-T and rotate some FNM right now!
Will you be discussing the b-side GG Allin cover, “I wanna f#&c myself”? If so I may do that now too…….

  • bbeh2183

Looking forward to this series. Love Mr. Patton’s work.

  • kelfro

    “Greenfields” – incredible obscure b-side

  • Totally Mangled

Anso, you have restored my faith in Metal Sucks.

  • J-MAN

This has made my day and the next thirty as well.

Leave these guys back in the 90s where they belong.

  • Fallingtopieces91

Leave these guys in timeless land where they belong, by god damn!

  • SENTINEL

GODDAMMIT they need to tour the fucking states!!! Angel Dust is one of the best albums ever. And yeah Ween needs some more rep! Chocolate & Cheese, The Mollusk, and 12 Golden Country Greats are farkin classics too

  • Poop

“Anso DF dedicates every single day in August to celebration and exploration of the San Francisco alt-metal greats”
This is far and away the best idea you’ve ever had.

  • Anthony

Wasn’t Midlife Crisis a really popular song too thougH?

  • hankmccain

Do a whole year of Faith No More!!!

    • ray finkle

i agree, new album would lethal too, patton is shite without them

  • Number0six

FAITH NO MORE ARE THE GREATEST BAND EVER THE ARE RESPONSABLE FOR THE BEST MUSIC ERA OF ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!

  • mikey

I thought the crossword answer was the song “Easy” damnit

Maybe it was their only hit in one particular backwater country but they had mutiple hits in the rest of the world. I’d suggest the song “Absolute Zero” needs a mention, no idea why it never made it onto an album.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Sean-Heron/9391234 Ryan Sean Heron

just made august so much fucking better! FNM will never get the credit they deserve. fucking genius band.

the part about their 98 demise is slightly off though. because I saw them in Philly last summer and it was the best fucking concert I have ever seen by far.

  • Number0six

Also their last tour here in Australia not to long ago was a the best concert I’d been to since their last tour in 97!!!

A band that will always be over looked by the industry and the jerks that make the machine turn…

No matter, their fans are loyal and know the fantastic truth that is FAITH NO MORE.

  • Mistyrants

Mike Patton is my most favorite singer. I’ve loved FNM for 21 years. “The Gentle Art of Making Enemies” is a great song. If they have another US tour I’d be ridiculously happy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Xander-Harris/538957452 Xander Harris

Awesome idea. Here are some of my contributions -

Another Body Murdered w/ Boo Ya Tribe – FNM has some 13 different Greatest Hits CDS out there and this jam, one of the most underrated metal/rap duets of all time, is not on a single one. Patton’s contribution is just 1 word in this song, but man does he own that song. Really creative, aggressive, duet.

And for the live moments (because FNM are one of the more consistently amazing and unpredictable bands out there)

A Small Victory live on Hanging w/ MTV 1992 – this was on their VHS release back in the day and for some reason the audio is missing now on the youtube video. Don’t ask me why. Amazing ending, the VJ thinks the song is over and FNM launches into this really intense metal outburst. Over and over, like 5 times, before passing to dis Guns and Roses

Patton eats a shoelace, finishes the song, throws up the shoelace and then throws it back into the audience.

That last LA show that opened up with Pills for Breakfast then Be Aggressive. Wow.

Patton stage dives directly into Puffy. Mike on Mike violence.

There was another one, sometime around 1997 where Patton cuts his head on the edge of the stage and there blood pouring all down his face, but he continues the song.

Looking forward to your posts -

my love to faith no more can not be expressed in words.

had no chance to see them live in the 90ies, thought i would die without being able to celebrate the holy faith no mass. then they came back and i saw them in berlin last year (or was it 2009?) and it was pure awesomeness. I have to say it was the best concert i’ve been to in my life.

btw this is the best live clip i discovered on my endless strides through the web hunting fnm devotional thingies:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_IuqJWKTH4

i’m going to switch off the computer and cry tears of joy now.

  • Chimp-O-Neg

    Fucking ding fucking DONG.

Best FNM single ever was Ricochet, because I loved the way that the dirty GG Allin cover “I Wanna Fuck Myself” contrasted with the gloriously cheesy “Spanish Eyes”.

Amazing idea. This is one band that deserves more credit than they get. All the Patton catalog was incredible.

    Hope these songs make it:
    Just A Man
    Stripsearch
    Take This Bottle
    Evidence
    A Small Victory

  • sYgnal

Saw “AngelDust” live at the Worcester Auditorium w/ Helmet as the opening act. No offense, but, FNM blew Helmet off the freaking stage!

Honestly, I am happy that these guys are still off the “radar” (fuck The Onion). That way I don’t have to see Hillary Duff wearing a goddamn “We care a lot” shirt in magazine photos like an idiot not knowing that that album (including “Introduce Yourself”) was the worst crap ever and that Mike Patton saved this band from an early demise….

  • Mike

31 days of FNM, F**K yeah!

Just jumping on the bandwagon here. Angel Dust is the shit.

I hope “Why do you bother” gets some credit!

  • AC1976

Wish i could see them in sao paulo in november, but to expencive to travel all the way from norway. :(
Saw FNM in norway in 95, but don`t rembember much. To drunk I guess. :(

My favourite band, and I would love to se them live again somewhere in europe. Some new songs would be great, but I`ll never get tired of the old ones.

  • wha?

Kind of cool…. Billy Gould’s latest Twitter post.

A surpise to see this, but a pleasant one– August is FNM month at Metalsucks.com: http://t.co/HjLD5RT

      Thanks for posting dude!

  • Just a Fan

I have a fortune cookie that reads, “Life to you is a dashing a bold adventure.”

(I saw them in Milan at show #4 of their reunion tour and the 3rd-originally-only San Fran show…Chuck came out and sang Mark Bowen, Death March, We Care a Lot and As the Worm Turns. The show ended with Patton and Chuck singing Introduce Yourself. Holy shit that was awesome).

Thanks for this feature: I’ll be checking in every day!

You’ve never heard anything like this in metal music, have you? 20 years ago, this experimental, metal, alternative and probably even avant-garde album was released and NOTHING in music (especially in this lame site with a bunch of unoriginal, predictable and uncreative bands) has been released. Not only is this album the most innovative album that has to do with metal music, but it was one of the most original albums ever released in music history. Sadly, those horrible FNM-influenced bands give it no justice. Not trying to sound like a fanboy, but seriously, this song alone shits on every grunge band at the time, and any music released since. EXCEPT! For Patton’s own Mr. Bungle or his experimental projects. John Zorn, Melvins, Grotus, Secret Chiefs, Godflesh and some other stuff was the only salvation and creative music (other than music with real soul) that was any good or can come close to Angel Dust. All metal bands today try to be like their idols and fail, mainstream music is made by technology, and today’s rock is pop or retro. Even the once interesting (last good released was with Patton) Dillinger escape plan became a gimmick of themselves, with that steroid freak still trying to be Mike Patton, and even worse, sound exactly like Trent from NIN. Really, Angel Dust just shits on any music today.

Anyway, this is too amazing. Great electrifying metal guitar, original keyboard sounds, complex bass and drum work, Patton’s howls, screams, and OPERATIC vocals cannot be touch. VARICOOOOOOOOSE!

Now, you metal kids who think are “brutal” go listen to Fantomas or Naked City, and prepare to shit your trousers. Every band in this whole damn website cannot touch these musical genius’ talent (even lame ass dream theater) the most extreme music you’ll ever hear, and filled with world class musicians. You heard me, they are old enough to be your grandfathers, but they’ll shove the power of hardcore, speed, slow mellow classical, Jazz, exotica, and easy listening-lounge music straight up your ass. Oh, but yes, it’s extreme and talented as fuck!

    VOLAAAARE!

The members from Bungle have an enormous and endless taste and skills in music, but just one of it’s members (Trey) from Bungle can thrash a guitar way better than more than half of those in the death metal and thrash metal genres could ever do. Same with Larry from Primus, he’s not 100% metal. They, are not commonly involved in just one genre, but they’ll put to shame “the masters” from metal. One thing, they started in death metal though.

IT’S NO UNUSUAL TO BE LOVED BY ANYONE
BUT WHEN I SEE YOU HANGING ABOUT WITH ANYONE
IT’S NOT UNUSUAL TO SEE ME CRY,
    OH I WANNA DIE!

I sound like the ultimate fanboy, don’t I? Well, Angel Dust is incredibly heavy and experimental. But, it’s music. You like real music, buy it. It’s not metal (it’s heavier than metal) nor is it rock, it’s bizarre and strange beautiful ideas that combine a work of musical art. Art-metal, experimental-art, alternative-art.
I WAS BORN IN A CROSSFIRE HURRICANE
BUT IT’S ALL RIGHT NOW, IN FACT, IT’S A GAS
    IT’S A GAS! GAS! GAS!

    FOREVER, MY DARLING
    OUR LOVE WILL BE TRUE

Never before did you hear heavy music with samples, wah-wah guitars, drum beats based on, well… beats, opera vocals mixed with screams, growls, and falsetto mouth music, complex guitar work that ELECTRIFIES, a bit of funky bass lines that have the power of heavy apocalyptic rock, and keyboards sounds that are made of different sounds from the grave, Japanese sounds, and in some way, danceable. That’s all, folks!

    COME ON, FLY WITH ME.
    LET’S FLY. LET’S FLY AWAY
ONCE I GET YOU UP THERE
I’LL BE HOLDING YOU SO NEAR
    WEATHER-WISE IT’S SUCH A LOVELY DAY
JUST SAY THE WORDS AND WE’LL BEAT THE BIRDS
    DOWN TO ACAPULCO BAY!

PS For the youngsters, if you think this isn’t impressive and you’ve heard something like it before, you probably have heard those horrendous so-called “experimental metal/avant-garde metal bands ” who, have copied these great older ORIGINAL bands, but have failed miserably and are horrible period.
