TOO SOON? VINCE’S BEST OF 2011… SO FAR

Monday, August 1st, 2011 at 2:00pm by

Axl’s published his First Half of 2011 list and Corey’s published his… my turn!

I really do these every year as a way of documenting where my head is mid-year so when December rolls around I can go back and look, not so much as a definitive “Best of the First Half” statement. As such it’s only a half-decent representation on what’ll eventually end up on my final year-end list.

So, here it is, in alphabetical order: my favorite releases of 2011 so far.

  • Abysmal Dawn – Leveling the Plane of Existence
  • Anthrax - Worship Music
  • Believer – Transhuman
  • Decapitated – Carnival is Forever
  • The Human Abstract – Digital Veil
  • Revocation – Chaos of Forms
  • Scale the Summit – The Collective
  • Shining – VII: Född Förlorare
  • Sylosis – Edge of the Earth

Now, get to arguin’.

Makes me drool for that new Revocation if it’s up there with the rest of these…

As long as we all can agree Megadeth is better than Metallica, I feel no need to argue while praying today.

I’ve never heard of any of these bands.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Buckley/515200062 Jon Buckley

Challenge accepted. Metallica is better than Megadeth, hence why they left you with 5 bucks and a dirty mattress. Creating a shitty ripoff with worse vocals than Hetfields ball bustingly amazing God induced voice is like slapping the devil in the face over disagreeing about who’s turn it is to receive the reach around.

      • Bard

Terribad trolling yo. We all know Hetfield vocals blow.

        NEVA FREEEEEE NEVA MEEEUUUUUHHHHH!

        • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Alkahest

GIMME FUE GIMME FIE GIMME DABAJABAZA

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Buckley/515200062 Jon Buckley

          GO TOUCH HIS DICK bard.

          • Kirk Hammett

            Metallica is better.

    • Steph

You’ve never heard of Anthrax Dave? Aren’t you touring with them?

      • Jeff Young

Yeah, but his pansy ass is probably too busy backstage praying to even realize which bands are on the bill. God signed his contracts for him.

Fuckin’ sellouts, Megadeth was the best when I was in the band.

    • the pair

I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. plus you kicked suicide silence off a tour and that’s…well, that’s just swell.

  • My Balls on Vince’s chin

    This list sucks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Buckley/515200062 Jon Buckley

yeah I only liked two of those releases and they are not favorites by far. I am really surprised at Believer, bleh. Of course EVERYONE on this site will love Digital Veil…

      • Marchosias

Yeah, not much here that I can relate to. I like Digital Veil, but over time, it’s lost its luster. I would have thought Origin and All Shall Perish would be on here, but it appears not.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lou-Guberti/804425053 Lou Guberti

Chaos of Dorms? Sounds like the last 4 years of college for me.

SRZ tho, super excited for new Revocation

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Reagan/520958920 Mike Reagan

Hmmm……….2 albums that aren’t out yet, but I really want to hear

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Tremblay/811265143 Dave Tremblay

the new Scale the Summit is not that good imo.

  • bryno

In response to the title: yes, too soon, there’s so much potential for releases in September alone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austin-Wells/100000827221296 Austin Wells

I only see 2 albums on this list that are truly spectacular (The Collective, Edge of the Earth). The rest are good but not great, and in some cases are average at best (Leveling the Plane of Existence, Chaos of Forms). Where the fuck is Krallice? Where’s Gridlink? Where’s Ed Gein? Where’s Trap Them? What the fuck is going on, Obscura doesn’t even get a mention here and neither do Nader Sadek.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jacob-Adolphsen/100000074498810 Jacob Adolphsen

    • James

      These

      • http://music.whitearms.com Dr. Chim Richalds

        hell right!

  • Ray Peterson212

Chimaira comes out in 15 days, which is a guarantee for this list.

    • The_I

      I don’t know… what I’ve heard hasn’t been great.

      Good list, Vince.

      • CreptorStatus

You gotta be kidding. Chimaira is the most boring, shitty, nu-metal band around. They haven’t done anything good, ever.

    • stu1

Band is so God awful. Next level terrible. And that new single, “Trigger Finger??” You have GOT to be joking.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Roshin-Wolfson/557092638 Dan Roshin Wolfson

    shitty list

failed to include disma and mitochondrion as i’ve often stated in my frequent emails

    • Fred Durst

      Disma is the tits.

      • The Flying Scotsman

+1 on the Disma. Plus: Origin, Nader Sadek, Krallice. Negative Plane, Exhumed, Ash Borer, Krallice, Tombs, Necros Christos, Hell, Deceased…shit the Blut Aus Nord is better than almost all of these.

        Weak.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Roshin-Wolfson/557092638 Dan Roshin Wolfson

so many legit bands right there

          seriously Mitochondrion deserves attention.

  • Ja5on

This site is really on Revocation’s nuts, WTF? I mean they’re ok, but really? Shit show Obscura some love or something.

    • Sasquatch

I think half of what they put on these lists is right and the other half is on there to start arguments, hence more posts.

    • stu1

They fall into the same category along with Darkest Hour, Daath; bands whom if you’re only context was this site, you’d think they were insanely popular and really really good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikael-Chimp-Hansen/1047068918 Mikael Chimp Hansen

    No Black Dahlia???…weird!

    • dicknballs

Agreed, so far that is the best album of 2011.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mikael-Chimp-Hansen/1047068918 Mikael Chimp Hansen

        very much indeed!

      • Douche Baggins

        <3

  • Trux

    Vince’s list > Corey`s list > Axl`s list.

  • PatrickSTL

‘Digital Veil” is staying in my top 10 as well. I wasn’t sure at first but I keep buying and checking out albums and “Digital Veil” still bets most of them.

I also really like “The Collective” but not sure it will make my top 10.

  • Douche Baggins

It’s a personal list pole smokers. I’m sure all of our lists would be much different. I rather enjoy Decapitated’s new album quite a bit though.

    • Bilbo Faggins

I fully agree with this. Especially when you called them all pole smokers lol

      • Dildo Baggins

        Agreed.

        • Douche Baggins

          <3 you guys

    • Charlie

Oh man oh man number 1 advocator of Carnival is Forever right here.

  • http://giantofthemountain.bandcamp.com Lordassenfroth

    transhuman was great

  • Igottawocket

Scale the Summit I agree with, but… Where in eff is Devin Townsend?

    • The Uncool Guy Down The Hall

      Addicted came out in 2009.

      /ducks

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-McGregor/1195550656 Mitch McGregor

yeah dude and deconstruction and ghost came out just over a month ago… And personally I think it’s way too soon to even think about a best of list, there’s still dozens of incredible bands bringing out albums within the next few months

        • The Uncool Guy Down The Hall

          [thatsthejoke.jpg]

          • B-RAD IS RAD

            new DT isnt good.

    no BTBAM?

  • Beowulf

Yeah I don’t think Vince likes TBDM, if you read some, but cool list even though I haven’t heard a lot of it (Anthrax) still gotta put Amon Amarth on mine!

  • boazhimself

    i do not concur.

  • cyrollan

Good to see some Abysmal Dawn love here. I think they’re a great modern-yet-old-school death metal band. They don’t need the bells ‘n whistles, because their music stands on its own.

People out there bash Slayer and Cannibal Corpse for putting out the same record over and over. Other people bash Metallica and Anthrax for changing their sound every few records. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Abysmal Dawn produce consistent, high-quality, no-frills death metal. They’re skilled musicians and can write a f**king song.

    • Farva

I agree with you whole heatedly. Leveling the Plane of Existence is my favorite death metal record so far this year, and it’s been a pretty damn good year for death metal (new Origin, Hate Eternal, Obscura).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Raphael-Pinsker/28400447 Raphael Pinsker

Obscura is the best record of 2011.

    • RandomSoul

      +1

      • Bard

Fuckin’ thirded, Omnivium=Cosmogensis 2.0 and that is saying something because Comsogensis is an awesome album.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mitch-McGregor/1195550656 Mitch McGregor

amazing record, they focused on what made Cosmogenesis good and extended on it. Definitely a top contender on my list of favoured albums in ’11,

  • erik

Scale the Summit – what a little kid band name.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tyler-Osborn/100001135401725 Tyler Osborn

      ….

  • David B.

Why is no one showing love for the new Anaal Nathrakh album. That’s my number 1 pick so far for this year

    • James

Amazing band, but in my opinion Passion only had three or four good songs.

For me I don’t think it tops Constellation (which is brilliant), and it’s hard to say it’s
better than some of the really good metal out this year.

  • Slaughterhouse

Its fucking hilarious how many people get upset because your tastes are not theirs. God forbid people like different things.

    • Turkey

      You must be new here.

It’s hilarious at first but then eventually it makes you give up hope for humanity and die of bed sores.

  • Alex

I wasn’t too big a fan of Digital Veil.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jon-Buckley/515200062 Jon Buckley

yeah it was okay, I really liked the second track but the rest of the album is just sort lackluster and the overall sound of the record is strange, the drums sound wonky.

  • Kuranes

I think in general I’m more aligned with Vince’s taste than Axl’s taste, and I haven’t even heard of a lot of these. I guess I’ll check them out on Spotify.

  • John

Are you kidding me?! no Between The Buried and Me or Obscura OR Black Dahlia Murder?! The new BTBAM was just an EP and still it is 30 mins long with 3 quality tracks. TBDM is fr4eaking amazing as it gets, its the Nocturnal sound with more experimenting how the Fuck are they not on this list?! I shouldnt have to mention why Obscura is on the list(although I will). Freaking amazing guitar, amazing bass and insanley tech drums=awesome.

  • Alex_P

I need to relisten to Scale the Summit, but otherwise there is absolutely no overlap between our years so far. This of course perturbs me and will force me to rant at you angrily.

  • Poopenshaft

I love Scale the Summits previous album but I fail to see how this new album is so good. Last Chance to Reason and Origin should be on this list.

    • Savage Animal

      +1 for LCtR and Origin

      • Gipson

Another agreed for Last Chance to Reason. It took 3 or 4 listens to get there, but once it hit me, it hit me hard. That album is pretty fantastic.

    • Android

I, too, agree on LC2R. For me, Level 2 is album of the year so far. I am not so sure about Origin. Entity is great, but I just can’t get in to it like I did with Antithesis.

  • RedXIII

Surprised no one has been whining about Lolgust Burnsn Red

  • RedXIII

Surprised no one has been whining about Lolgust Burns Red

  • otis

why no symphony x love on any of these lists? iconoclast was fucking great.

  • The Real Douchebag

This guy blows at picking favourites.

Where the fuck is Origin, All Shall Perish, Amon Amarth, The Black Dahlia Murder, Between The Buried And Me, Born Of Osiris, Obscura, Devin Townsend, Hate Eternal, and Septicflesh?

Hate Eternal – Phoenix Among the Ashes
Job For A Cowboy – Gloom EP
    Origin – Entity
    Devin Townsend Project – Deconstruction

And this is all before All Pigs Must Die, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Vader, Revocation, YOB, Wolves In The Throne Room, Opeth, Landmine Marathon, Textures, Mastodon, RWAKE, Absu, Blotted Science and Skeletonwitch have even had a chance to release their records. WAAAAAY too soon.

How is there no Devin Townsend? And we know everyone is going to love what Mastadon puts out so this list is useless and pointless.

No love for Arch Enemy Khaos Legions?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leonardo-Castanedo/100001332008546 Leonardo Castanedo

Really…digital veil. Where the fuck is Ritual of Black Dahlia or OHnmivalent of Anomalous, bought are pretty awesome albums. On the other hand,. chaos of forms has really great songs.
