31 DAYS OF FAITH NO MORE: “RICOCHET”

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 at 4:00pm by

Spurred by a lazy crossword clue in The Onion (36 down, four letters: “Faith No More’s only hit”), MetalSucks contributor Anso DF dedicates every single day in August to celebration and exploration of the San Francisco alt-metal greats. Here we prove that history’s greatest band landed more than one commercial hit (crossword answer: “Epic” natch), we revel in FNM’s embarrassing wealth of winning album tracks (themselves often fit for chart topping), and we dip into the staggering best of the b-sides (ditto). Along the way, we survey the context of FNM’s big break (amid similarly seminal acts Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, and Ween) to the post-Nevermind, panic-based recording industry in which the brilliantly versatile, fearless powerhouse band operated until their 1998 demise. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Song “Ricochet”

Written by Patton (L); Gould, Bordin, Patton (M)

Released 1995

Appears on King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime album

Produced by Andy Wallace

Guitars by Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3, Mr. Bungle)

Key lyric “And I’d rather be shot in the face/Than hear what you’re gonna say”

Awesome song elevated to supra-awesomeness by Patton’s alternating of wide-open, cracky shouts and perfect pitched singing, sometimes in the same phrase (see 3:27). Impossible to fake. Studdd.

Single? Yes, King‘s second (preceded by “Digging The Grave” and followed by “Evidence”)

The climate “Ricochet” faced Modern Rock radio competition from such timeless greats as Better Than Ezra (“Good”), Live (“Lightning Crashes” barf), and Bush (“Comedown”).

Didja know? it’s been reported that “Ricochet” is shorthanded as “Nirvana” on setlists because it was written on the day of Kurt Cobain’s death.

Probably my favorite band and I am torn between KFAD and AD as my favorite album. I was lucky enough to see Faith No More back in 1997/1998 on the KFAD tour in Philly, great show, even better because Limp Bizkit got booed off the stage. Over the years I saw Mr. Bungle twice, Tomohawk once, Lovage once, Peeping Tom once, Fantomas once and Patton vs Rahzel once, all great in their own ways. I than got to see Faith No More again last summer in Brooklyn and they haven’t lost a step, still amazing live band.

Love this song. Very dramatic and and aggressive. Spruance does not get enough love.

  • Dan

I believe 97/98 was Album of the Year tour with Limp Bizkit. Saw them as well and yes, Limp Bizkit sucked ballz even then.

I wish Spruance had stayed with FNM. Great stage presence and had he been able to get some writing credits FNM could have churned out a record that matched Angel Dust’s greatness.

    • Richard Brunelle

Trey Spruance is probably the most underrated guitarists around. As a musician and composer he’s beyond reproach, but people forget he shreds like a motherfucker. There’s a Faxed Head track where he nails the fast section of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, the end part which is sampled on Malpractice. Fucking ridiculous.

That Onion comment intrigued me as well.

  • gnalrk

dammit anso, i’m all ready to hate everything you write and then you spend the month giving FNM love. grr.
sigh, here goes. “keep these coming anso”

  • Kuranes

I was all butthurt when I heard Jim Martin left and I resolutely ignored this album for about a year after it came out. But when I bought it I realized I was a jackass and it is amazing.

  • fukinslayer

in Chile, Patton sings “senior Pinochet is gonna get you”, making reference to that fucking murderer/torturer/dictator

  • Just a Fan

I saw FNM perform Ricochet on Conan back in 1995:

…but only recently did I stumble across the skit they did with Max that aired the following night:

great song, underrated album…but how can you diss Lightning Crashes? that song is incredible, except when the singer says “placenta.”

  • Totally Mangled

Looking forward to tomorrows selection. Wishing I had KFAD on vinyl…….

king for a day is such an amazing fucking record. so musically diverse and beautiful. and it all flows together so perfectly.

I used to be a big fan of FNM. Listened to their CDs many times but then the music started to be boring for me. The only CD I still listen to is “King for a Day” and sometimes the last CD. I like this CD so much because of Trey Spruance guitar work and less amount of synthesizers. My favorite track – The Last to Know.

I’ve never been able to get in to FNM. I respect Mike Patton for being one of the greatest frontmen to ever live, but I dunno.. they don’t seem that spectacular to me. Despite this, I am going to listen to all 31 of these songs in the hope that I might see what everyone else sees in them.

  • Mr. B

Love the idea of FNM month, in all seriousness if you don’t like Faith No More you can fuck off!!

  • nick

It was the aoty tour not the kfad tour I typed that wrong

Bush and Live being named in the same sentence as Faith No More? Damn shame. I rather be shot to the face, then hear who you’re going to named next.
