Lol, ive never heard about 85% of these bands.

      Welcome to metalhipster.net.

      • Like seriously bro, what the deal?

Yeah, because the only people that like music that’s somewhat underground are hipsters. It can’t be because people actually like music that hasn’t been fucked with by record labels to appeal to teenage girls. So please go back listening to Escape the Fate and Chelsea Grin.

        • mental4metal

          +1

        • colbow

come on he actually has a point there. it’s another kind of “hipster”, but still the same species, deep down inside. let’s call the thing “hipsterity” and there you go. nothing to be butthurt about, it’s just there.

          • Fred Durst

No. Hipsters like ‘underground’ music because it’s cool and all of their hipster friends are into it. Most metalheads into lesser known music just like lesser known music because it sounds better. I listen to Metallica, and I listen to old 80′s bands who released two demos and split up.

          • colbow

Look Fred, I’m not judging or anything, I just think it’s quite OK to admit that it’s.. well, let’s just say that “more hipster than not”.

Besides, hey, I am familiar with bands like Abyssphere, Inverno Eterno, Naer Mataron, Phazm, Rhadamantys, Vondur, and probably 100 more bands that are fairly obscure and yes, some of them are good and sound good and whatever you want, but it’s not about that. There is some strange thrill to it to get to know bands no one else has heard about, hoping to find something you’ve never heard before, etc etc and that’s unfortunately kinda the same thing they call hipsters hipster for. You’ll either end up finding something you like, finding something unique, or finding out that it’s the same shit as that of the mainstream bands, but what I’m talking about is the will itself to go into the obscure realm to find something – that’s what I was roughly referring to when I brought up the term “hipsterity”.

I hate that this reply got so long, but let me just add one more thing. Speaking of Vondur, for instance… To my mind they are absolutely shitty. What they play is some random, inaccurate, stupid, stupid “music” that has never been composed properly, plus it sounds like my dog’s taking a shit in an aluminium bathtub or whatever – you see the point. But there are people out there, who absolutely admire what this band did, they love their sound, etc. They’ve only got one output as far as I know that came out around 1995 or so. Anyways, I think you actually have to be hipster enough to sit there and.. umm… well, get yourself used to this kinda music, there is no better way I can put it. You don’t go and just find out about them like that, the mere fact that you heard about them is an indication that you’ll probably like them, like you did with other bands that take a while to get used to. Didn’t work for me, cuz I think a lot of these underground bands are waaaaay overrated – mostly by metal hipsters. Take Xasthur for instance. There is a very, very small community who heard him in the first place, only those people who actually care about the lowest of low ends. Now, these people (I’d love to refer to them as hipsters again, but I’m sensing I’m gonna get some for that sooner or later) began to talk about it, praise it, all that, and now everyone says Xasthur is great, while in fact most of us couldn’t listen to it like we can listen to, say, At The Gates, or even Emperor, for that matter.

        • Brother

It’s got nothing to do with not liking them for being obscure, it’s that I don’t have the patience to weed through all the shit bands that come with the territory. Someone at a record label gets paid to do that for me.

          • Kazz

So, you’d rather not think for yourself when it comes to music. You’re content to just like whatever whatever some corporation tells you to.

          • Fred Durst

Record labels dont get paid to show you good music, they get paid to show you trendy music.

    • Builtforsin

      Thats called new music.

Back in my day we used to check out new bands, see if we like them

  • Fred Durst

Disma+Obscura+Nader Sadek=You have the second best taste on MetalSucks, behind the Sergeant of course.

  • Clayton Michaels

Nice to see a Baring Teeth reference. That album is some insane tech-death. If you’re a Gorguts fan (esp. their Obscura album), you will love Baring Teeth.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Izeovasis/165678580151365 Jamison

Yes. They are awesome. Willowtip Records has continuously released amazing stuff since they started over 10 years ago, but their current “roster” of releases is pretty amazing stuff. And with a ton of it streaming for free from their bandcamp, what’s not to love?

    • Dofsky

Thank you for the recommendation. These guys are right up my alley!

  • Android

    You’re missing Beyond Creation.

    • Andrew

      And Ulcerate.

  • Farva

I totally forgot the Pyrrhon record came out this year. Kickass album from an underrated band.

  • Trux

now that 40 bands I most likely will never check out….. not because I assume they are bad….. just not my cup of tea…

  • Beowulf

Lol, Don’t get me wrong, I LIKE not knowing these bands because it makes me go and look them up. I like being a “metal hipster” if it means I like good music.

  • Matthijs

Craft’s Void puts all those bands to shame.

  • Jewcifer

    Revrant’s mom is a hipster

  • Andy Synn

Svart Crown crushes… but I’m pretty certain it came out last year.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Etan-Rosenbloom/601426 Etan Rosenbloom

It came out ex-US last year, but it was released in the U.S. in 2011.

  • Lou Bega

In my opinion Conjure and Command By Toxic holocuast is one of the best metal releases this year

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jesse-Bartholomew-Zuretti/33705960 Jesse Bartholomew Zuretti

    Best list I’ve seen yet

  • no-ghost

Thats a damn fine list. Im surprised you didn’t put YOB in there though, fucking killer album. keep it going!

  • kornholio

total cop out. This is like a list of all the releases from beard metal labels like Profound Lore, Relapse, Southern Lord and whatnot. Grow some balls please. Actually form opinions rather than being Sergeant D’s typical beta metal nerd. And Liturgy is on the list.

    • stu1

Shocking, but some people actually like this stuff. I know, blows your wee mind.

    • KC

The fact that you have Korn as part of your name automatically makes me feel like your opinion is shit.

You call them “beard metal” labels, but Relapse and Southern Lord were both around long before the whole beard metal thing started.

      • kornholio

And Roadrunner once released death metal albums exclusively. Your point is very persuasive.

  • http://www.thepathlesstraveledrecords.com The Path Less Travelved Records

    Is that Planks out yet?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Etan-Rosenbloom/601426 Etan Rosenbloom

Yeah, I think it was released in late June.

  • Kazz

Makes me with Satan wrote for Metalsucks more often. The comp he put together for his best of 2009 is still one of the best comps I’ve ever downloaded.

  • Rafael

    Limp Bizkit – Gold Cobra

  • FJ

damn, someone on this site actually knows their shit? unexpected as hell…ruined it by giving props to Liturgy though

  • Baron

This is easily the best list, awesome stuff on here.

  • Bobby DeNiro

Disagree with Drugs of Faith and Dark Castle. Infestus and Blut Aus Nord are good but not year end worthy. Good call on the Whitehorse, American Heritage, Flourishing and Disma.
    Very good list overall!

  • Gerry

That GIGAN lp is tops fer me

  • misha

SepticFlesh is THE top album so far this year. Ulcerate is #2 and Fleshgod Apocalypse is #3.

It seems I like unconventional death metal or something :)

  • Lord of the Fruit Flies

I’m gonna have to echo D’argo Erishkigal up there. Where has Moonsorrow been on all these lists?

“Varjoina…” is devastating, yet it seems to have slipped under the radar even here.

  • Jerry

It’s nice to see DRUGS OF FAITH on the list. Corroded has been one of the best albums this year…so far……and TOMBS!

  • http://www.facebook.com/FlannelBastard Dylan Jones

Dark Castle, great choice, thats my album of the year.
