WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER?

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster 2011

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster aren’t really a metal band anymore even though they still tour with heavy bands that are much closer to their old metalcore sound. Modern-day Maylene sounds more like Clutch than, say, The Showdown, another band in their scene who heavily incorporate a “southern” rock sound into their metal. Axl thinks they sound like Brother Cane (and I can’t disagree). But metal or not, I like ‘em; they write catchy, southern-infused hard rock songs that don’t take much mental effort to wrap your head around.

So where does the metal community stand on this band? I ask because I really have no idea; they tour with crappy Christcore bands like Underoath on a regular basis despite having little or nothing to do with that whole scene anymore. Are Underoath fans also Maylene fans? Do Maylene have their own fanbase? Do people care that they’re not really “metal”?? Stream their new track “In Dead We Dream” over at Revolver Magazine’s website – from their new album IV, out on September 27 via Ferret Music – then come back here and tell us what you think.

I really like Maylene… not entirely original but badass nonetheless… Their singer, Dallas Taylor, used to scream for Underoath… So there’s that connection.

  • djinnocide

The Underoath connection makes sense since Dallas used to sing for them back when Underoath was a hardcore band in the late 90′s. I heard they’ve done some touring with Clutch recently. I guess that makes more sense from a sound standpoint.

    • Redgrave9

Not to sound like a genre-snob or anything, but Underoath used to be more of a Christian death metal band, rather than hardcore. Not br00tal or true death metal, but you get the idea.

I saw them with PTH in Philly. The only thing that sucks more than this band are their fans.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Perlovsky/14812777 Mike Perlovsky

couldn’t agree more. saw them in chicago. so shitty, that it hurt. their fans are scenster douchebags and their attitude is kid rock meets limp bizkit, aka obviously awesome. their riffs suck and they play some of the most generic shit out there. my brother and i wikipedia’d them during the show, which in itself is pretty funny. apperently the big story behind them is some bush crash in europe (between a bus and a rail, i believe) where no one was hurt but the band had to cancel their show, yet somehow showed up to sell merch. rock n roll!

    • Slaughterhouse

That is a spot on statement. I as well saw them with PTH and TesseracT and Im not sure why they were on the bill. All of their damn fans were wearing high top sneakers, flannel shirts and stupid straight brimmed hats. I went outside and smoked for their entire set because it was just wrong.

      • amnesik

Yeah they suck, but no one gives a fuck about what they were wearing -_-

    • Matt

I went to that Chicago show you guys were taking about but didn’t show up till this bands second to last song.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Wilkens/64601390 Tim Wilkens

I was there too. Maylene definitely sucked. They have one single that I like, and everything is meh. I think I discovered them through Rock Band lol

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Jones/1052640748 Dylan Jones

Um, I wear flannel and high tops….
And I listen to mainly doom, black, thrash and death :L
Haven’t heard too much from these guys though, but I know I at least like one song if not much else.

  • boazhimself

    this band is poopy.

  • Kazz

I don’t mind ‘em. I’ve heard people give them crap for not being ‘authentic’ when it comes to their southern influence, but I don’t know why exactly that is. The new song sounds pretty solid.

  • Curmudgeon

I’m loving this song. If their whole album is this southern hard rock style, I’d be spinning the CD all the time during my Metal “off” times but still want to hear something rocking and heavy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Marc-Thomas/46601058 Marc Thomas

This sums up my feelings on 75% of bands I hear… When can we get the “art” back in artist.

  • BigDan

I didn’t mind seeing them in concert with PTH but I am wasn’t impressed enough to ever but a cd.

    • Gipson

I planned to make this exact same comment.

  • Tim

They’re kind of repetitive, but I like their sound.

  • Andy Synn

I’d rather listen to The Showdown any day.

But I bear them no ill will.

  • kingap

i think they’re a pretty fun band, they do the southern hard rock/metal thing pretty damn well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Sean-Heron/9391234 Ryan Sean Heron

I like the concept they’re going for. I dig southern bluesy style metal. but I just don’t think they pull if off that well. the vocals are shit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Sean-Heron/9391234 Ryan Sean Heron

Neil Fallon could fart on a snare drum and it would sound better than anything these guys have done

  • Beowulf

They’re actually pretty cool, but I couldn’t agree more about their douchey fans. Cool bands though.

  • JB

Dallas Taylor got me into metal

    • ParalysisByAnalysis

      +1

  • dickpussy

tuned out after the first album. this new song makes me think i made the correct decision.

  • Jason

A good band that just appreciates making music regardless of genre or spiritual beliefs.

  • Brian

Catchy fun band. I thought their live show was a good time. Actually, I’ll be seeing them again in a few weeks when they come around with Fair To Midland and The Damned Things.

  • http://www.flickr.com/l8photos Lucas L8

Great band. They started with 3 guitar players, and now have just one, so I don’t know how do they sound live now

  • builtforsin

    Their old shit, faster, better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Johnston/1444803323 Alex Johnston

I thought of Clutch right away, with maybe a bit of an arena rock sound mixed in. It’s catchy and fun, I have nothing against this.

  • YourInsideisDisfigured

Been following these guys for a while… They have definitely change over time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJseed56TKY)

I still consider them a guilty pleasure.

    • troe

I think that’s the best way to describe them, “a guilty pleasure”. I dig the whole southern thing, but there are bands that do it better.

  • Fred Durst

Nothing I’d activley look for and listen to, but nothing bad. Just safe radio hard rock.

  • Kyle

The christian dimension of this band makes me unable to render a fair and objective opinion so I will abstain.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Landon-Martin/1644823740 Landon Martin

      Thanks for letting us know.

  • homelessviking

I like ‘em. I usually prefer the sounds of bands like Trap Them, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Between the Buried and Me, but I still enjoy the southern rock stuff. Does that make me a poser? Maybe. But I enjoy the music nonetheless.

  • TheSkunkCatcher

I would consider them a metal band still and I think they’re great (even better live).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cj-Coronado/1818773972 Cj Coronado

    I dig ‘em

  • wcshelton

My faviort band of all time is the smashing pumpkins. there not metal. i like a lot of bands that arnt metal. Pink Flyod, pear jam and otheres. why do i tell you this? to show you how little of a fuck i give about anyone liking a band thatisn’t metal. so please, stop trying to justify likeing bands that arn’t “cool” or trying to get people to jump on the bandwaggon.

His buzz from drinking smirnoff ice was wearing off

  • pellet man

I think they’re pretty fun to listen to.

  • chris

This sounds nothing like Clutch. If it did, the music would be good.

  • Krang10

I enjoyed their first CD, but their output since has just shown that they used most of their ideas already.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Seth-Jones/736964211 Seth Jones

they are not cup of tea

  • BewareTheWater

this song is an alright southern hard rock tune, and they have some good riffs, but their stuff typically annoys me. The vocals in the past have been very one dimensional and feel whiny after a while

  • Mitch K.

i love maylene! loved them before i knew the singer was in underoath when they first started, and i loved underoath before i listened to maylene. killer band! great tunes! 3 guitars! win.

    • Mitch K.

just listened to the song… anyone else notice how its barely sounds like there are guitars on the track until the solo kicks in? it just sounds like bass the whole time… so much for those 3 guitars kicking ass haha

  • Kye

    Love them. Love Underoath.

  • ACoffinShip

I saw them before their third album came out when they were touring with Clutch and Murder by Death. Enjoyed them a hell of a lot. I went and found their albums and found it a little cleaner, a little harder to get into.

They’re a band that I consider pretty enjoyable. Talent-wise I absolutely would not put them on the same level as Clutch, Maylene seems to be a little bit forgettable, not huge on substance, but they’re still a really fun southern-fried rock band.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Timmons/1778011234 Ryan Timmons

I wasn’t a huge fan of their studio stuff but I saw them at the Protest the Hero show and Damn!, those guys know how to put on a good show. Plus Maylene fans are crazy as hell (in a good way).

  • Frankenberry

My honest opinion is that Maylene and the sons of disaster is probably THE best band (especially in their genre) to come out in the last 15 years… I absolutely love their brand of Southern fried blues based hard rock.. wouldnt really call them metal persay… But something MUCH MUCH better!.. With songs like Step up.. you cant go wrong with these guys!

    • Charles Menschik

I couldn’t agree more. I have been listening to these guys from the start! They are a great band with a great sound and the new stuff is going to be amazing! I haven’t been this excited for a new album since… their last one! To be honest I had been worried that Maylene was about to call it quits, so it’s great to know they have a new album coming out and have a new drive and life for the band. Can’t wait to hear the rest!

  • Blake Redden

My dad raised me on Southern Rock, Hard Rock, and Classic Metal. I dig.

Although I do love a lot of the comments: “I’m a fan but their fans are douches”

  • Themis McCloud

Maylene is awesome. Enough said. There are so many labels for music these days who even gives a shit, they rock and that’s the end of the story.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-Lemos/610435431 Jessica Lemos

Amazing band! I love their lyrics, and the songs are just awesome. I could listen to them all day :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael--Vanderven/502827008 Michael Vanderven

Every Time I Die recorded an album with the machine. gutter phenom. the machine told them if they really like ACDC so much, then write an ACDC album.

    gutter phenom came out.

then everyone thought southern hardcore rock would take over.
hence why the showdown and Maylene were signed at around the same time. but this never caught on. southern bands never really took off. i mean, both bands are popular

I just seen MATSOD for the first time in Jacksonville, FL. I actually never heard of them before. They opened up for 10 Years. Surprisingly, they were the heaviest band on the bill. I met both of the guitarist during the show and both of them were really cool and down to earth.

So whatever, past present or future, they are still cool in my book.

  • ibby7

good band fun live show. i see no reason to hate them

  • xazmuthx

I’m streets ahead about this band. good stuff

  • Olivia Menschik

Maylene and the Sons of Disaster is one of the greatest bands out there! I am trying to figure out what is “not entirely original” about them. I cannot find any other band that sounds even remotely close to them that I like.

  • justin

Def in my top 5 favorite bands. I’m not sure what I think of the new song but it’s growing on me.

People keep saying other bands do their sound better. Who please? I’ve been looking for bands with a similar sound and haven’t been able to find many. Thanks in advance!

  • makeloveintheglove

Really like the past 2 records by these guys, picked them up when “II” dropped onto college radio. deliver a solid sound and after seeing them in 2010 w/ saosin and then again with PTH in 2011, their fan base has grown significantly. sharp riffs and gritty vox. best of luck to these guys. personally, i think they put on a GREAT live show and they bring it every time they come into detroit.

  • Chris

Ok for one thing Maylene is not metal. So to compare them to the bands that they play with, don’t mean a single thing. I talk to one of their guitarists every now and then and we had this discussion about what genre they would be called and he said straight rock and roll. Not metal at all. As for the fans. Who cares what the hell they wear?! So what if they wear flannel shirts or straight brimmed hats. They like the band for their music not for how they look or anything like that. Last show I went to, all of those “scene” kids knew more of the words than I do and Maylene is definitely one of my top 5 bands but I listen more closely to the music than the lyrics since I play music. As for the question as to what I think about Maylene, I think they are a band that makes music they way they want to make music and that’s all that matters. If you like it then you like it. If you don’t then that’s just fine with me.

  • Esther

The Showdown had an awesome first album and has been crap ever since. In my opinion, they don’t count as metal anymore and there is no comparison between them and Maylene. If you don’t consider Maylene metal now, then you can’t have ever considered them metal because their sound really hasn’t changed that much. I’d know, I listen to all 3 albums on shuffle on my iPod all the time.

I don’t know, maybe its because I’m from the south, but I LOVE Maylene and have since I saw them the first time on a tiny stage in Charlotte, NC before I’d ever heard their first album. I’ve since seen them 3 more times and my husband just went to see them again last Sunday night. Awesome band, awesome guitar riffs, awesome live shows.

  • Caleb DeVolld

I love Maylene! When I saw them in 2006 they played before P.O.D. who headlined in Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. I loved them ever since. One of the reasons why they are special to me is because they fuse the good ole’ south with metal and some screaming.
After hearing their new song “In Dead We Dream” I’m excited because they’re bringing back some of their roots (harder riffs, more straightforward) but I am sad because Dallas’ vocals are cleaner. I really wanted him to go back to the 1st album, which was more growls and more messy, harder vocals. But I’m excited for IV!!!

  • Nathan

I believe that a large part of Maylene’s fan base comes from people who listened to dallas when he was with Underoath. I really don’t understand why the write up on them says “they tour with crappy Christcore bands like Underoath on a regular basis despite having little or nothing to do with that whole scene anymore. Are Underoath fans also Maylene fans?” Obviously whom ever wrote this has not looked into the bands lyrics, influences or previous history. Dallas Taylor, previous Underoath member. “The band name and concept are based on the legend of the criminal gang of Ma Barker and her sons, noting that evil lifestyles will be met with “divine justice” Directly from wiki. So if you know the lyrics, then you understand the ties with christian bands, are they out their pushing their beliefs… no but you can make the correlation. As far as people talking trash about the band, All I’ve really heard is a bunch of people whining about the guitars, sure that’s why I wouldn’t call them metal, I think its much more southern hardcore. With Maylene its more about how the entire sound comes together then the individual parts. I have been to multiple shows and had a chance to talk with the band in a small venue setting, very cool guys, anyone who has harsh words about them, just is into a completely different type of music, no need to talk shit.

    • chuck

      my feelings exactly

  • CJ

    Awesome band!! II was dope!!

  • NK

Maylene is without a doubt one of my favorite bands. their music has changed over the years, but honestly who would expect a band not to? i mean people change, of course the music they make would too. the first single off the new album sounds a little unmastered to me, and a little soft, but i still like it. everytime i’ve seen them live (right now i’ve seen them about 15 times, with another show coming up Aug. 17th) it’s been a blast. i don’t pay enough attention to the fans to know how other people there look or dress, but honestly why would you care? you people make it sound like you dislike a band because the fans dress in a way you don’t care for. that’s completely idiotic. alot of the trash talk going on here sounds like jealousy to me. you people need to quit trash talking and learn to play an instrument. if the music scene sucks so much, do something about it.

  • John

Pretty awesome band. They’re kind of like a stripped down version of He Is Legend except with yelling instead of singing.

Also, I laugh every time you guys rip on UnderOath. You guys jock bands on here that are 10 times more generic and derivative. It’s even more hilarious when you guys jock bands that are obviously, 100% influenced by UnderOath.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ggi-Gonzales/648432086 Gögi Gonzales

      agreed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amanda-Darer/1450271976 Amanda Darer

They’re good. I’ve only been listening to them for a little bit and have only heard a few of their songs. But what I’ve heard is good.

  • Sara

There are normal people who are maylene fans, and then there are what my friends and I call “Beardists”. They are kids who think Dallas Taylor is some kind of deity just because he was in Underoath. They are creepy, dressed in plaid, and always talking about his beard.

Aside from that, I find maylene to be a good time. I have seen them live quite a few times and they always do a great job. I do think the bands they tour with don’t often fit them. In fact, the only tour I have ever seen them on that really made sense was the Southern Thunder Tour they did in 2005 with The Showdown and Chasing Victory.

I Enjoy their sound a lot. II is my favorite of the albums so far, but I love them all.

  • Jonet

Love them. Favorite band. New stuff is different but I still love them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ggi-Gonzales/648432086 Gögi Gonzales

    1. mentioning what their fans look like in a dumb state is dumb.

    2. every album is different, which is interesting… but i agree that they need to get back into their harder sound. a lot of it has to do with the lineup changes.

    3. every time i see them (in texas) theyre good.

    4. clutch fucking sucks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ggi-Gonzales/648432086 Gögi Gonzales

Malene and the sons of disaster is awesome!! metal rules!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lane-GingerLife-Pittman/542376723 Lane GingerLife Pittman

My favorite band. Definitely liked their first album the best. The second was good too, different feel though. The third was just raunchy. Got my hopes up for this new one but it looks like it’ll be worse than the third. Still fun to see them live though…and i’m not one of those douchebags described up top ^^^

  • zackariah

I said maylene and the sons of disaster is awesome!! and metal rules!!

  • Deucemon

100% in on these guys, they were my favorite set on the pth tour. Their metal tinged sourthern rock is great drinking music.

  • John Ceeeeeee

maylene is unreal. love all their stuff. the music blows me away. i will admit that dallas taylors lyrics were much more moving on his old underoath albums, and lack depth in his maylene albums. but other than that i think they put on a wicked show. most of their fans dress like prissy cunts though haha. but as for the new song, im not too sure if i like it yet. it comes off as a bit generic and predictable. whatever, i’ll see how the rest of the album is before i make my final thoughts.

  • Reaper Man

    Fucking love Maylene.

  • Timothy

Awesome! So Stoked for the new record! I really don’t think they have a bad song.

these guys really have their own fanbase, i saw ‘em with for today….everyone walked out after for today….didn’t stick around ….we went from like 600 to like 75 it was pretty ridiculous but they have their fans and their fans are loyal…plus i like ‘em

Maylene are kickass. They are probably in my top 10 favorite bands. All of their albums have a distinct sound and even though they constantly change their style they still stay fresh without losing their edge. Im not sure if im the only person but when I first heard kvelertak they reminded me of maylene.

I have all 3 of their CDs and they are absolutely awesome.

Never would I have ever imagined two of my all time favorite genres, Southern Rock and Metal mixing to become one until MatSoD came around back way back when. Their sound is unbelievably amazing and mixing in sync so well. When listening, you can’t help but imagine white trash sitting on a porch spitting out tobacco into a bucket in the middle of nowhere.

The one thing I absolutely love most about them is their message and faith in Christ though. Mixed with their music, probably one of my all time favorite bands to date. So much soul in their music that you can’t help but scream or air guitar or air drum your way through each and every song.

Their CDs are the kind that you really hate to skip any song for. True, I have favorites but the whole album is amazing. They deserve more credit than they are given.

Why does every band have to be labeled and stuck to a scene? That’s dumb. Maylene is a composition of 4 albums at this point. If you have any idea about their music as a whole you know that they transcend boundries and labels. They tour with everyone which is part of the bands philosophy (also something any real fan should know about them. They want noone to be left out and they turn noone away.

Oh yeah… MAYLENE IS THE BEST BAND EVER       PERIOD

  • Um…. no

I’m a wee bit confused what distorted train of logic led you to the conclusion that Maylene sucks……
I must say that I STRONGLY DISAGREE.
In my opinion, they’re better than most metal bands because they think outside the box of hardcore bands who make CD shaped half hour breakdown sessions….

Absolutely obsessed with the band. their album III definitely had some tracks on there that I wouldn’t refer to as metal, but nonetheless good.  I’ll have to wait to hear their new album to make a judgement on whether or not they’re still southern metal.  Either way I love these guys and think they freaking rock!
