EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: EAST OF THE WALL, “WHISKEY SIPPER”

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 at 1:00pm by

We’ve been excited about new East of the Wall music since… well, pretty much since several MS staffers enjoyed their last album Ressentiment so much that they named it as one of their favorite records of 2010. That excitement continued as news of a brand new album began to bubble up earlier this year and culminates right now in the form of our very first musical taste of what said new album, The Apologist, has in store.

In short, The Apologist is the same but different; the same wonky, jazzy, proggy via post-hardcore East of the Wall-isms that made Ressentiment (and its predecessor Farmer’s Almanac) so endearing, but done in new ways, evolved to the next level, more ambitious. Which is exactly what you want from a new album by a favorite band of yours; to do the same thing all over again would just be boring. One thing that immediately jumps out as different from Ressentiment is the rawer, more organic production quality, courtesy producer Andrew Schneider, renowned for his work with Cave In, Pelican, Keelhaul, Rosetta and many others. Ressentiment was actually recorded as a different band featuring mostly the same members (the now defunct Biclops) so perhaps the change in sonic aesthetic is a reaction to that; either way, worry not, for it still sounds fucking phenomenal and all the instruments are crystal clear in the mix.

Stream “Whiskey Sipper” from The Apologist below. The album comes out on October 25th and is available for pre-order now on both vinyl and CD (with slightly different cover artwork… so get both!!). East of the Wall will be on tour in October and November with an assortment of merry gentlemen, including Tidal Arms, Iron Thrones, Meek is Murder, Goes Cube and White Arms of Athena on various dates. See when they’re coming to your town after the jump.

I’ve seen this band promoted for a while now but this is the first time i’ve actually listened to it. I like it a lot, but the BTBAM worship part towards the middle really kind of killed my boner. Definitely going to seek out more by EOTW to compare and contrast now. fingers crossed for less tommy rogers influence.

I wouldn’t compare them to BTBAM at all, they are much different and dont really have much of their influence, may have just been a coincidence.  Give their album from last year a listen, it is great.

I agree that they’re very different, and i’m into it. But the part that starts right around 2:29 feels like it’s straight out of the btbam playbook to me. Definitely hoping it is just coincidence because i’m way down with the rest of it. I love how mid-tempo and heavy the rest of the song is. Just enough groove too.

        • Aaa

if one is to count EOTW, day without dawn and postman syndrome as basically the same band, then they date back to 1996, with vaguely the same sound, long before BTBAM even existed

        • Frampler

I agree that soft vocal part is very much like BTBAM. However, Ressentiment – which I’ve listened to a staggering number of times – isn’t very BTBAM-like. The jazziness is more chaotic, and there’s a focus on sounds and atmosphere rather than technical precision. If you liked the rest of this song, then do check it out.

Dammit, nowhere near me with White Arms, that would be a fun show to see.

I was just listening to Ressentiment and wondering when I would get to hear something from the new album. Good stuff!

I’ve barely made it 2 minutes in and I can already tell this is getting my money for the Vinyl preorder.

Whoa. I haven’t been huge on these guys in the past. I always felt like they had the tools, but there was a disconnect between their music and any real emotional weight. This tune has me thinking differently.

I feel the same way. Ressentiment is gorgeously composed, but it never hit me right below the tits.  This is the titty hitter.

I JUST EJACULATE MY CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.

When these guys opened for The Ocean, they played down a vocalist and down a guitar and STILL ripped. I never felt Ressentiment did that experience justice, but this is sounding mighty tasty.

This fills the void that Poison the Well left.  Awesome.

The bass guitar is what makes this band a whole level above the others. Loved that even though the song is really different to Ressentiment it still sounded exactly like East of the Wall right from the start.
