TRAVIS RICHTER EXPLAINS HIS SPLIT WITH THE HUMAN ABSTRACT

Thursday, August 25th, 2011 at 10:00am by

Yesterday, we got the sad news that the rumors are true — Travis Richter and The Human Abstract have parted ways. Of course, for adoring fans (this one included), the question remains: Why did they part ways?

Both MetalSucks and Lambgoat (and who knows how many other sites that haven’t reported it) received e-mails a few weeks ago which suggested that Richter didn’t want to leave his girlfriend behind when the band went on tour; now Richter himself has taken to Tumblr to give a slightly different explanation:

“A couple months ago I told the guys I wasn’t going to tour anymore for a couple reasons. One, I’m turning 30 and have given all my time to bands and the road, and I want to be able to start a family and see my parents and grandparents more. Secondly, I graduated with an audio production degree, and I feel myself being pulled into that world as more of a full time position. I think The Human Abstract is an amazingly gifted group of musicians with mind bending potential and I couldn’t thank them enough for everything they’ve done for me since I joined the band in feb of 2010. The fans have also been more than amazing and accepted me into the THA family, and for that I sincerely thank you!”

So, really, whether there was a woman involved or not, the real culprit here is just life, and the fact that touring sucks, and begins to suck infinitely more as one gets older and feels an increased desire for some stability. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this kind of story, and it won’t be the last. It’s a bummer, but it’s just the way things go sometimes.

The Human Abstract’s tour with Periphery, Textures, and The Contortionist starts on September 2; THA will be utilizing Corelia’s Ryan Devlin as a touring vocalist. Get dates here.

As a 27 year old in a band that tours, and with 30 quickly approaching…..I hope this doesnt become me. But the scary part is, I understand his logic.

It WILL become you but the truth is,it should anyway.I mean if you are not playing in large venues, headlining and shit, what’s the point of touring in a metal band after 30? If we talk about ”core scene” (i know, had to say it) for example, there are only guys like etid who can still tour at the age of 30 because they play in motherfucking soundwave, download etc.

At 34, my wife asked me if I planned on playing shitty clubs for the rest of my life. I thought, yes, but really no was a better answer. I missed being at home, I hated our practice space, I hated playing with younger and younger musicians that didn’t put the time into learning their instruments. Sometimes you have to walk away. It’s hard though.

this is the sad story indeed…

well, on a good note, people will stop telling me I look like the lead singer of THA now.

I gave up any aspirations of being a touring musician around the age of 22. Still write/record in my bedroom and I am happy as fuck doing so

It’s a real shame, the guy has some pipes. But the good news here is that Corelia is finally going to get some serious publicity, and they fucking deserve it.

why take it on if you’re not gonna stick it out? they would have been better finding a permanent replacement for that dreadfull ells girl.

its highly unlikely that they just up and called it quits without attempting to work things out in a way the benefited all involved. touring is crazy and its good that he was honest with everything instead of just going awol and it appears that there isn’t any angst with toward him from his former bandmates from his decision so you can’t really ask for anymore than that.

Can understand the logic.  I can relate somewhat.  Being in the Marines I used to deploy all the damn time.  Gets old after a while being away from family and whatnot.  The older you get, the less time you want to spend away from home.

Hopefully this is the real reason he left the band because women alone should never be a key factor in making personal life choices (since she’s just his “gf”). While some would disagree with me, that girl could leave him tomorrow and he’s shit out of luck.

Especially since she’s only 21. She’s young enough that randomly deciding to pack up and move on isn’t so much of a stretch.

If you aren’t happy being on the road or being in a band, then there is absolutely no reason left to do it, plain and simple.  Touring can be hard, and if the pros don’t outweigh the cons, chances are you aren’t making enough for it to be monetarily worthwhile either.

It is reasons like this why “metalsucks” sadly this style of music does not pack stadiums, therefore no $….unless you are in the big 4 :(  best of luck in your future endeavors Travis!

Whatever the excuss, you don’t join a popular band, solidify fans then just bail. He got what he wanted and that was to have a name. USER. THA will find someone better I’m sure, someone dedicated to their fans, someone that will record more than one album. He may have just screwed himself anyway. Digital Veil is a musicians masterpiece and I can only see THA getting bigger.

I am all ready excited for the next THA album, a new direction per album is something I can get behind
