Gus G ESP

You know him and you love him; Gus G., mastermind and guitarist of Greek metallers Firewind, who also happens to be the newest addition to the band of some guy named Ozzy. We’ve got a Gus G. ESP Gus-200 Signature Series guitar to give away to one lucky MetalSucks reader who comments with our favorite answer to the following question:

What’s your favorite Ozzy guitar solo of all time, and why?

Firewind will be on tour in North America with Arsis, White Wizzard and Nightrage this October. Get a full list of tour dates here.

Mr. Crowley (both solos) off the Blizzard of Oz album.

For most guitar players it is instantly recognizable, musically it was way ahead of its time, and it is just a cool solo to listen to.

Mama I’m Coming Home, there’s just so much emotion in that solo that is hard to top. Also, (true story) every time a girlfriend and I break up, that song comes on the radio within an hour! It’s the craziest thing, then Zakk plays that solo which makes my eyes water…. Damn Metalsucks, making me get all emotional. ;-(

Definitely, Mama I’m coming Home. It’s the only part of the song that re-affirms my masculinity after listening to ozzy bitch and moan for 3 minutes.

No More Tears. I remember the first time I heard it, the whole song blew me away but the solo in particular. I thought that the only good Ozzy stuff were the early albums, based on the fairly boring stuff on his newer albums, but I thought I’d give Zakk’s first album a try (Thanks to a mention of how good it was on this website). It absolutely rocked my world. And that’s why No More Tears is awesome.

I’ll would have to say that without a doubt it has to be  Perry Mason. Mainly because it showed that Zakk using all his tricks in that one to really great effect where it keeps getting better.I will now explain this solo very vividly. Not much different then getting a girl home(Zakk’s Blues lick not very uncommon) finding out shes Bi(Wait he’s finger tapping???) she calls her girlfriend then shes over your house(Him alternate picking really really fast and clean is this real?) your having a threesome with two hot girls instead of one now (Zakk’s Sweeping now what the fuck that didn’t just happen)

Eat drugs and listen to Bark At The Moon on head phones. Jake E Lee will
tap dance between your ears with that ripping, phased out shred fest
and it’s going to feel like you’re going full speed down the rainbow

able to fucking catch up to Lee on that god damn unicorn and when you wake
up naked on mom’s couch wondering who super glued pubes to your
face, just let out a good “AAAooooOOOOO!” and roll with it.

I don’t know if you can consider it a “solo” per say since it’s a full musical composition, but Randy really killed it on that track. The best thing about the entire composition as a whole is going back and listening to the rest of the album and hearing all the classical influence in those songs.

    1. I lost my virginity to that song.

I would like to say over the mountain because it is honestly killer and it was also the first ozzy/randy solo I learned to play on guitar.  However, I truly have an emotional connection with a different song.  Being a long distance runner throughout my life, when not training for a team I’ve had to train by myself which could get very boring.  I always need something(then ipod mini/now iphone) to listen to so I don’t go crazy and lose my motivation.  Heavy metal music has always been the force driving me through my training.  I broke my femur(srs.) during a track season about 7 years ago and it was an extremely long rehabilitation with many long(metaphorically speaking) runs.  I Iost my motivation over and over again and contemplated whether or not it was worth it to try to get in shape again. But, whenever I was ready to quit on my runs and I heard “dun dun dun dun dun dun dun….” and zakk wyldes guitar breaks through the build up (link at exact time i’m sepaking of www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O676EoWhIo&feature=player_detailpage#t=278s ) I’ve always felt like I could literally break through a brick wall.  I still get pumped by it to this day. It has gotten me through many of my toughest runs from the time I was a high schooler to a race I ran in july.

PS I don’t even like zakk wylde.

“Crazy Babies” – Besides being a cool song, the solo was used frequently in commercials and promos for Headbanger’s Ball in the 80s, and it made me get into metal, then shredding and learning how to play guitar in that order. Plus, Zakk sounds like Randy and Jake E. Lee at various points, so it’s kind of like a “Best Of” of Ozzy’s 80s axemen.

Bark at the moon – Ozzy Osbourne (With Zakk Wylde on guitar) That solo at the end is incredible.

It’s a classic what more can I say. It’s always a change of pace for me to listen to something like Ozzy, but as soon as I hear that solo it makes it worth switching off my djentcore electro grind.

  • VerrucktsAl

Devil’s Daughter as played by Zakk Wylde. It’s the first Ozzy record to feature Zakk Wylde and his playing on it is actually a breathe of fresh air than all of the other stuff he recorded with Ozzy. Also, everyone is most likely going to pick a Rhoads solo. And finally because I want a free guitar.

No more tears is simply the best, nearly analagous to some great sex.  The piano begins as some foreplay, then some slap and tickle with the slow start.  The solo eventually blossoms into an agressive, melodic tapestry of wylde orgasm leaving the listener craving a round 2.  Unfortunately, there is no round two, because this was the hottest chick youll ever bang.

    No More Tears:

One of the last times I got to spend with my best friend Justin before he moved to the other side of the country was at an event called Brews Around the Zoo.  Basically a beer and food fest @ the zoo if that wasn’t obvious.  Besides enjoying all the craft beer we could slam down our gullets, we somehow managed to get access to the “VIP” tent with an open bar and enjoyed what is now known as the “Crown Royal” portion of the night.  I’m not sure how we got back there, but I’m pretty sure it has something to do with every person over 50 (read: all of the zoo folk) assuming that if you have a beard and even 1 tattoo, then you are definitely a part of that band that covered the fuck out of “Mississippi Queen” over by the elephant enclosure.  Photo evidence proves that after the Crown hour, we made the very mature and grown-up decision to get our faces painted (Me: a bald eagle, Justin: a glittering unicorn srs).  By the time our ride got there to pick us up we were, to put it mildly, completely fucking shit-housed.  Our buddy picked us up in a Jeep Wrangler with the top off and doors removed.  Since there weren’t any CDs/Ipod in the car we tuned to the local classic rock station.  As a sign that we had done the right thing, as soon as we hit the interstate the opening bass line kicked in.  From that moment on shit got incredibly real.  In the blink of an eye, Justin and I were immediately transformed into our 12 year old selves.  Two naive little kids who wanted nothing more than to play guitar like all of the bands we were getting into at the time.  Two immature dipshits unafraid of how the world perceived us.  We proceeded to air guitar/bass/drum the shit out of every note of that song.  We sang as loud as we could with reckless abandon, including plenty of moments where you forget the words, trail off like you’re really still singing only to come back stronger than ever when you remember the words.  That night, anyone fortunate/unfortunate enough to be cruising down I-4 was treated to Central Florida’s greatest karaoke jam ever.  Two inebriated man-children with painted faces hanging out of a Jeep rocking the fuck out to “No More Tears”.  I still look back and am so thankful that one of the last times I saw my best friend, we capped it off in the same fashion that we spent so many days and nights; as two dudes growing up with metal in our hearts.

I don’t have to pick something from Scream in order to win that sweet geetar, do I?

Because, I mean, how do I say this gently…
    Randy. Fucken. Rhoads.

Because I get to pick my favorite, (while not necessarily best), guitar solo from Ozzy’s albums, I choose the one from the middle of “Diary of a Madman”, the last track from the album of the same name (obviously).

This is because it fits the mood of the song perfectly, enhancing the subtle oddness of the theme without being overly showy (ahem: I’m looking at you, Wylde…). For me, it deepens the darkness within those surrounding shadows, menacing the listener with terrors unseen. Slowly building to an epic, tumultuous climax, this solo perfectly bridges the gap between encompassing despair and the ultimate conclusion.

P.S. I love you, Jake E Lee!!! Sorry!

The solo from “Crazy Train” literally changed my life. I grew up with classic hard rock and heavy metal more or less always in the background but no piece of guitar work had ever grabbed me like that before. The power and complexity, coupled with the searing passion that comes through in Randy’s playing opended my mind to how special guitar playing can really be. I listened to that song over and over for days, never tiring of it; and my obssesive love of Randy Rhoads has yet to let up some eleven years on. Not only did I fall in love with Randy’s playing because of that song; but my appreciation for Iommi, May, Blackmore, Clapton, etc. deepened to alarming depths once I started listening with the ear Randy had created for me. I am eternally grateful to Randy for writing that solo. . .

Revelation mother earth because I think it helped shape metal solo’s to this day. Also it helped dime win alot of cool shit in Texas back in the day.

  • ToxicTrace

My favorite solo of all time is the Crazy train solo, because the first time you hear that song you have no idea what is going on, and then the solo kicks in, and it blasts you to a higher existence, a place where all is possible if you shred that lick and look cool while doing it. That solo is the first solo that sounded legitimately un-human, and it will live on for the rest of time.

  • DalCimaius

Mr. Crowly.  The solo just about makes up for the unforgivably long (and boring) intro.

P.S. If you say the intro is just fine, stop fucking lying.

Mr. Crowley solo, easy. Sure all of the other guitarists Ozzy has had over the years have been absolutely killer players, but Randy had something else. He brought Ozzy back from the fucking brink of death and their synergy is unmatched. The solo, the runs, the riffs, and the vocals all mesh together like something that meshes together really well. It’s one of the reasons I picked up the guitar and I haven’t looked back.

Gets Me Through. Sure the song is Ozzy doing “an Ozzy song” rather than something new and exciting, and the album was thrown together with songs written by popular folk selected by the record company, but the solo is just typical Zakk Wylde 101. Emotional on one hand and pure shred on the other, the guy can play anyone under the table, yet still miraculously come up with gorgeous heart felt music. This solo shows both in a short burst, and leaves the rest of the mediocre album for dead.

  • Johnny

Mr. Crowley: Both solos.  I have spent countless hours arguing with other guitar geeks over which solo is best, the first one or the second one, but i find that both these solos tell a story which aids the song and really highlight Randy Rhoads’ signature style and sound.

  • http://www.facebook.com/LanceDillonLyon Lance Dillon Lyon

Hard to pick but I will say “I Just Want You” for the sake of this exercise. That entire song has the power to lift me up from a dark spot. The solo works because it does what the lyrics do without speaking a word. It as if the guitar is saying “GET UP BITCH!” The video for the song tops it all off as a moment of greatness.

Honorable mention goes to “Let It Die”. That solo really makes me think “I am the new kid and I own this shit!!!!” the whole time!

  • TheHateMachine

I am going with S.A.T.O whole song rips ass. The lead fills tie into the solo and sounds like a fucking chain saw .It is the epitome of balls out melodic soloing. One of the best songs ever for a 1 guitar band to play and let the guitar player swing their balls around.
The guitar tone reminds me of inherent evil. Randy sounded like GODZILLA on that track.

No More Tears is my personal favorite, mainly because of the general badass energy of the track that extends into the solo. Sure, it got played on the radio a lot but it’s legitimately MEAN! The song almost has a humorously epic quality to it, and the song changes mood to a kind of Guns n’ Roses hard rock vibe when the solo lifts off. Love it.

Crazy train has my favorite Ozzy guitar solo of all time. It featured the great Randy Rhoads and i heard it took him hours to compose the damn thing which means he put careful effort and melody into consideration. It is one of his greatest solos and lives on through all the beginning guitarists who try to learn the song and afterwords feel like guitar gods.

I am going with not Gus G, but rather Zakk… his solo at Buddokahn in 2002… he just OWNS that stage, he comes out and takes control and then shows how it’s done.  And then the teeth playing.  Just in terms of showmanship… I’ll give it to him.

Goodbye To Romance, the song has a special place in my heart because my father wants it played at his funeral. I love/hate this song for that reason and the solo is done really well. Triggers an emotion within me. Then there is that sweet outro keyboard lead as well.

Favorite solo is definitely Mr Crowley’s.  It’s a shred fest over a slower groove, yet retains such a good feel and emotion.

  • EET FUK

Jake E. Lee tears holes in space and time with his solo in “Center of Eternity.”  With each key change, his phrasing becomes more intense, as if he is trading off with himself, until the explosive conclusion. His lead fills throughout the song are like delicious hors d’oeuvres to prep you for the main course.

How this guy is not ranked up there among the greats is beyond me.

  • CreptorStatus

The solo in Mr Crowley because I am making up a shitty excuse to win that guitar.

I like the solo on Paranoid the best. It’s fast, has LOTS of power and sounds great with the distortion he’s getting, and for its day it was way ahead of its time . . .

Randy’s solo in Flying High Again is like a song within a song. You could actually take it out and it would stand alone as a melodic, yet technically satisfying musical passage.  The ripping, sticcato and legato trade off in the opening is the very foundation for what shred is. Not that it’s the first time that had ever been done, but I’ll bet more 80s shredders learned straight from the first two Ozzy and Van Halen records than anywhere else. But the great thing about this solo is that it goes from the opening shred runs into the tapping section that is the ultimate lesson in tapping. It creates its own tune at that point. The way it moves from the high register to the lower register, repeating the same pattern, is in perfect sync with the hair on my neck rising and then calming back down. Gets me every time since the first time I heard it before I even knew how to play guitar as a kid.  I first learned to tap by learning this solo, and because of it, I feel like I’ve always had a great technique because I learned directly from the master.  It was all the other things about guitar playing that were so much harder to me. I almost think it’s because Randy was a teacher.  It’s like his solos are so real and so human that lessons are built in somehow.  Learning these early solos has been the most useful things in developing my lead playing over the years (and even moreso with rhythm – but that’s another topic).  So everytime I hear this solo, it’s like the school bell ringing.  Time to listen and learn.  Randy is talking, so shut the fuck up!

Bark At The Moon solo, easy. Each time I listen to it, it’s like there’s a tiny Jake E. Lee in my ear playing his guitar hooked up to my brain as an amp.

No More Tears – Zakk Wylde. Awesome stuff, great build up and crazy runs. Great choice in notes and performed perfectly. Great technically sound solo, always makes we want to pick up guitar and start shreddin’

My favorite is the opening solo in “Road To Nowhere”. The phrasing of the solo is amazing, the guitar sings as much as Ozzy does, perhaps more, but it sets the tone for the song as a whole. It is a great solo on its own, but it works into the song really well. The first verse is backed by a clean guitar part that really lets Ozzy’s vocals shine, but the solo really sets the tone for where the song is going. The first half of the song is led much more by the vocals, but the solo gives the overall feeling of the song, both the music and lyrics. The guitar leads in the first part of the song come out of the solo part as a reminder that while it might be Ozzy’s ballad, it is still balanced with guitars, and metal. The later solos in the second half of the song retain some of the phrasing of the first solo, but they really work off the riffs rather than the vocal melodies and phrasing.

It is a tremendous solo to set the tone for the album’s closer – it might be a ballad, but it is Ozzy and it is heavy metal – guitar is going to sing too.

To be honest, my favorite solo in an Ozzy Osbourne song is the one in Mr. Tinkertrain. The solo is not amazingly technical or long, but it fits the song perfectly staying in the fast tempo that makes it seem like the song itself is moving forward. I also love the drums in the middle of the solo really enhancing the guitar work. I believe this solo sounds the best out of all on Ozzy songs, and Zakk shreds wonderfully.

Rhoads’ solo in Crazy Train, because after I learned it, I was train-bound to Paris from London then I met this crazy chick with orange hair. She’s now my long-time girlfriend and she sings Ozzy songs. Memorable.

Jake E. Lee’s – who by the way is totally underrated :( – solo from Shot In The Dark off the album The Ultimate Sin , just because its short and sweet yet so melodic and keeps the feel of the song going so well. i get bored of the other solo’s eventually but this one always uplifting to hear and play!

There are so many, from randy rhoads but my all time fav has to be with zakk wylde “No More Tears” the reason is it starts slow and builds it up in you to the full shred. When ever I hear it gets my blood pump’n.

The Randy solo in No Bone Movies. It is very different when compared to his other solos. Sounds like slide guitar. MAYBE IT IS?
    Plus the song is DIRTY!

Randy’s solo in Diary of a Madman HANDS DOWN. I get goosebumps listening to the song…you cannot help but see the brilliance of the man listening to the magic in every well thought and carefully chosen note of this song…it’s just never been topped, by any song, by any other Ozzy guitarist, ever. The off notes, the way it all conveys the madness…wow. =0). A+++

Ozzy didn’t play guitar. But.. in Ozzy’s group my favourite solos are in Hellraiser, a powerful long solo, Perry Mason with a shot powerful solo and No More Tears. In the new album, my favourite solo is in Let me hear you scream.

The studio outtakes of DEE from the TRIBUTE album.  Intellectually satisfying, and emotionally compelling.  The sound of Randy putting his guitar down at the end still gives me chills (it gives the impression that we are hearing his last notes).

My favorite Ozzy solo is probably the solos in Rock N Roll Rebel.  Simply because they’re fucking awesome.

  • Shredibanez7

That would defiantly have to be the solo on no more tears after the chill middle section with the whale sounds. Even though that was originally zack Wylde and not Gus G that solo kicks major ass!

My Favorite Solo would be Revelation Mother Earth. Everything about that song is so dramatic sounding, its goes from being dark to beautiful. i know Crazy Train and Mr Crowely have absolute amazing solo’s but there’s something Specail about Revelation Mother Earth. When the outro solo comes in it makes the hair on your arms stand up every time you hear it. using his style of playing mixing with the classical elements that he uses is absolutely beautiful.

I like Slash’s solos in “Crucify the dead”, as they really fit with ozzy’s style, but it’s easy to tell that Slash is the one playing the guitar. Failing that i like Gus’s solo in “let me hear you scream” as it really shows Gus’s talent at guitar.

Any solo Tony Iommi did with Black Sabbath! :P Particularly the one in the song ‘Black Sabbath’, if there is such thing as a perfect solo, that one comes close. I also love his Jazz influenced solos in ‘Planet Caravan’.

Revelation (Mother Earth).  Don’t even try to say that that is probably the most epic solo in history, or that the trill-buildup isn’t the most epic moment in heavy metal history.  And it was one of the first solos I ever learned, when I was 15 or so, and was easily the hardest one I knew.  So fuckin awesome, it got my ADD-filled ass to take the time to learn that bitch.

At this moment, i like very much about guitar solo of flying high again. the reason why is that i’m practicing that solo.

The solo in Mr. Crowley because it gets my emotions going when thinking of what music would have been like if RR had not died. He was way to talented to die in such a young age. His compositions are godlike, and I listen to at least 2 tracks of Ozzy every day.
And Gus does a really good job playing Randys stuff in his own way. And thats why I should win the guitar because I’m learning Crazy Train solo at the moment, and will afterwards go for Mr. Crowley.

Ozzy will always be a part of my answer, of people ask to what kind of music I like, not to say that Randy and Gus won’t be mentioned because they definitely will. I love Firewind and the story behind, and I love RR and Ozzy.

  • DunkB

I answer your question with one of my own……why do i only get to pick one?! its frickin impossible! Just like trying to get my head around ‘I cant believe its not butter’….i know its not, but my taste buds have never let me down before! thus i conclude, the question itself is flawed and ultimately impossible to answer (coherently at least)!

My favorite Ozzy guitar solo, has to be S.A.T.O. perhaps not one of the bands most popular songs, but nonetheless it has remained one of my favorites for quite some time. As for the guitar solo. The entire build up of riffs throughout the song really boosts the guitar solo, with the thundering bass and drums running in the background I always enjoy when Randy suddenly, as if an explosion occurred, goes absolutely crazy. Also I think it is a solo that really reflects Randy’s world class skill and ability to combine various techniques. Besides all that I think that the sound of the guitar is absolutely wonderful!

My favourite solo from Ozzy’s songs is the one from “Let it die”, cause it’s the one who revealed Gus G’s talent to the world as it’s the first track from “Scream”, where he started to work with the prince of darkness; it is short and not that fast but the melody really gets in the guts, especially the first phrase,  but you can see how this man can definitely with a slow melody (and not obviously high speed solos like all guitar players often do these days) take you to heaven!!!!!!!

I HAVE to choose a favorite!?  I love every single song by Ozzy ever, and each and every solo in those songs is Godlike.  But I guess if I have to choose…
Hm.  It may be cliched, but I’d say the best guitar solo in one of Ozzy’s songs is Randy Rhoads playing Crazy Train.  I would say Rock ‘n’ Roll Rebel (cuz that is a great frickin’ song and solo), but I honestly don’t believe anyone can live up to the Godly riffing of Randy, especially as heavy and fast-paced as his playing was in Crazy Train.

Ozzy’s Road To Nowhere drew me in the first time I heared it. It’s that passion bake solo in the intro, a propper face melter. Then just as you think you’ve escaped Zakk’s second teaser of a solo, he lets fly with yet another screamer. But it’s his last solo that puts that epic cherry on the cake, and sets that little voice off saying “Go on, press repeat, you know you want too” It is that final solo that I consider my favorite Ozzy guitar solo of all time.

Mr. Crowley is incredible, but it’s not so much the guitar itself that grabs me, it’s also the bass progression and drums that back the guitar lead, and I get that epic feel that pulls my heart up to my throat.  I have to say Randy had a chemistry with the band which made every lead he did powerful for me.  But this new guy gives me hope that in all honesty, my fave Ozzy guitar solo is yet to come, and now I’ll tell u why…

    1) Firewind kicks ass. The sound Gus brings from this background makes him far more technical than at least the last two soloists, and more contemporary now than Randy’s legacy (classic rock leads were somewhat progressive/technical but they were still competing in rock with that Bob Dylan – Rolling Stones raw feel back then that Randy totally mastered… technical playing didn’t mean “emotion” like the simple raw chord progressions did, but since it meant “skill” the good leads successfully combined these two elements). These days, based on influential legacies like Randy, good leads combine all that background chemistry to make the most progressive guitar playing be the most emotionally powerful, yet impressively skillful all in one. I think Gus will be able to bring Ozzy back on the scene in that way. He has an awesome humility to learn and the soul/brain capacity to truly get the intelligent soulful playing of Randy & Ozzy. So far he looks clearly able to master Randy’s skills from back then with the skill and the pathos (that’s Greek for passion) Randy put into it, and once he really establishes his chemistry with Ozzy, he’ll be able to bring the band to a new level with fresh energy and I LOVE his technical skills. He’s going to write blow-away solos very soon.
    2) He’s hot and I would love to have his babies. Can’t wait till he’s old & skilled like me.
    3) If he signed a guitar and I had a chance to win it, I would tattoo it on my breast.
    4) I love him, but Ozzy is getting old. He needs fresh meat like Gus to bring him back. Ozzy is a smart man, and a very smart business man in the industry. Most importantly for metalheads like us, he gets what it takes to beckon the thaw inside of us.

Mr. Crowley’s first solo, and not just because it’s by Randy Rhoads. I mean yes, Randy  was n insane player, but taking the solo by itself says it all. Like Zakk Wylde once mentioned, it’s like a song within a song. And the intro lick is pure class, even though it’s a pretty basic blues lick. The rest of the solo is just a perfect mix of classical and blues influences. Just pure genius.

I am a big Randy Rhoads fan but i think the best Ozzy guitar solo and personally my favorite guitar solo of all time is the solo from Bark at the Moon played by Jake E. Lee. Sorry Randy. Just the song alone captures the essence of heavy metal and signifies the birth and rise of modern heavy metal soloing. The solos flawless blazing riffs are set in motion by the screaming pinch harmonic lick that serves as a warning of impending face melting doom. The solo blends together perfectly and complements the grand larger than life sound better than chocolate complements strawberries while maintaining the integrity of the song and the signature Ozzy sound that comes with it. And to top it all off blistering licks so load and fast it will blow the clothes off the girl next door.

My favorite is Revolution Mother Earth , Randy just shines so much on this solo plus it’s the way it is structured it just flows so well and uses so many different facets of his playing style and modes The classical part of his playing is really evident too. Plus it just kicks ass !!

ozzy has had amazing guitar players throughout his career and each and everyone of them brought a unique style to his music.  choosing a solo from Randy’s era (RIP) is damn near impossible because they were all unique as well as complimented the song perfectly.  as much as i love his playing it’s to hard to choose one of his masterpiece’s as i love all of them equally.  especially mr. crowley on the live album from the blizzard tour.  the way randy was able to orchestrate that live version with don airey complimenting his guitar work as phenomenal!  that said i go with see you on the other side from the ozzmosis album.  listening to that solo reminds me of randys playing in the way that it compliments the song perfectly as well as the doubling if not tripling of the guitar work that randy was known for in the studio.  not sure if it was zakk or steve vai who actually played the solo on that due to the fact that zakk has writing credits but it looked as if steve was in the music video.

Definitely “No More Tears”. Since I was a little boy, I’ve always admired Zakk’s guitar work in this song. I guess you could say its what got me into metal. Once I heard that tune, I pulled away from my Alice Cooper/Zeppelin phase. It’s never gotten old for me. Whenever I get loaded I always turn the stereo full blast and air guitar that solo. It’s just beautiful. :’)

  • Ron Coolen

The incredible solo in “Bark at the Moon” , since it took almost 30 years to outperform Jake E. Lee’s version, it was Gus who did that, and he needed an ESP Guitar to do it!

  • Waxlozzy

My favorite solo from Ozzy has to be BELEIVER! It’s not that big of an ozzy song but when you hear the solo it’s just amazing! It makes me wanna see Randy play that in front of me! I can listen to that solo ALL DAY , literraly! That solo just makes me want to get up, grab a guitar and practice practice practice!

The first solo in Mr Crowleym/m/. It’s the perfect length and speed. It’s also got great melody and fits the rest of the song incredibly. Lastly, Randy Rhoads’ Mr Crowley solo reminds me so much of Gus G’s unique and inspiring guitar style:)

I heard once that when recording Mr. Crowley, Randy did the first solo. Proud of it, he went to Ozzy who told him it was shit. Then he did the second solo, pissed off and putting his heart and soul into it. When you listen to that song, you can feel the difference between the solos. The first solo is just a ripping, shred filled awesome rip fest. The second solo is an orgasmic, heart filled beast that makes you want to listen to the song over and over. Mr. Crowley, solo #2 is without a doubt, my favorite Ozzy/Randy solo, hands down.

  • KilledByDeath

For me it has to be “S.I.N.” from No More Tears album. While many consider “Miracle Man” and “No More Tears” iconic Zakk pieces, it seems that “S.I.N.” is simply where the metal is, i.e. it doesn’t break the tempo, doesn’t feel like filler (although nothing on first 2 albums with Zakk does, except maybe for “Zombie Stomp”), and after the final chorus, when you think it’s done, Zakk just comes back and melts your poor face yet again.

  • Fordmajorwwe

I’m really in trouble: I like Mr. Crowley’ solo ’cause is so distinctive but I also really like Zakk Wilde’ solos style (No More Tears, Perry Mason). Overall I think that the Gus G concept and idea in Let Me Hear You Scream’s solo of join different solos’s styles is so cool!

  • TzourasGG

Mr. Crowley. Its the most monstrous solo ever I’ve heard.I know they are more awesome solo but this one is way more ideal in term of timing, melodic and everything.Despite the fact that this are the only solo that i will always rewind the song back just to hear its solo even though i’ve set this song to repeat I’m still occasionally rewind it back myself. It’s just calmed my mind whenever I hear this song

My favorite one is Killer of Giants. It’s a long forgotten jewel in Ozzy’s catalogue. The funny thing is that Mr Jake E Lee, perhaps the least acclaimed Ozzy guitar player, had…like… his own positions (sorry I don’t know how to describe this well ’cause English is not my mother’s tongue) which make it almost impossible to play it well by many guitar players. However, it’s not that this solo is great just because it is difficult, but it serves a purpose on the song. I think that many fans get the goosebumps, reach the climax during the solo ’cause it gives the lyrics much more power. It’s in a way aggresive but still keeps the melancholic feel of the song. Many had lost hope in listening to it again, so thanks for including it during the whole 2010 tour. I watch the collection of videos of this song on YouTube all the time ’cause when I get to the Yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhh shout part right before the solo I’m ready to play it out loud with my air guitar, I have a blast really …. ha ha ha ha. Cheers.

Crazy Train. Rhoads CREATED Ozzy Osbourne, that’s a simple FACT, and Crazy Train was the song that made it happen. No ifs, buts or maybes, Crazy Train has done more for Ozzy than Black Sabbath or anything else has EVER done, and Rhoads paved the way with his magic. Now, Gus G, one of my personal heroes picks up the torch and will make Ozzy bigger than ever. Wait and see.

The Hand of the Enemy (Bonus Track) from the Scream album! I’ve listened to it so many time now! Great singing by Ozzy & great riffs and solo by Gus, just amazing!!! It must be a honor to play for a legend like Ozzy! Gus you deserve it. I have been listening to anything you’ve been a part of, since finding you in Firewind three years ago. My memory of this song would be the goosebumps I had when hearing it & mentioning this for a chance to win your autographed guitar Gus! I mean that memory would last a lifetime! Best of luck with everything!               Steve B
