THIS IS WHAT METALLICA’S “THE VIEW” WOULD SOUND LIKE WITHOUT LOU REED

[UPDATE, 1:06pm EDT: Welp, looks like the video's been pulled. Sorry folks.]

If you’re like most sane metalheads you did not like the Metallica / Loud Reed track “The View,” the first song to be released from their forthcoming LuLu collaboration. While I wouldn’t say that Lou Reed’s vocals were the only thing folks didn’t like about “The View” I’d say that they certainly didn’t help the cause. Don’t get me wrong, I love some Velvet Underground stuff but this just… doesn’t work. So what would “The View” sound like without Lou Reed? Internet to the rescue, via Metal Insider:

I can’t see anyone jumping into the ring to say this song totally fucking rules man one way or the other, but taking Reed’s vocals out of the equation certainly takes the edge off. At worst it sounds like a b-side from Death Magnetic and at best it’s a nice little 2-minute dittty about James Hetfield’s desire to be a table.

I think I may be the only person who actually enjoyed the Original Loutallica track… well I must be crazy or just not metal.

      I’d lean towards crazy.

Hey y’all, what’s up with all the hate on such a (still) great band??  And this collaboration?!?  Genius!!!  I really liked the LuLu track too!

I only had a few minor complaints – such as: the guitar, bass and drum work were all made of crap.  But besides that, I loved it!

Oh, and the vocals suck too.

But besides THAT, I can’t get enough!

Not sure if trolling or deaf.

Jame’s voice sounds so good in the track. Highlight of the song.

    • gee

Not the first time I’ve seen this comment, but I still think you’re fucking crazy.

  • Guv’na

I thought the Lou Reed vocals were actually a pretty clever attempt by Metallica to steer attention away from their own suckitude.

Now, thanks to Metalinsider, we can all be reminded - yet again - that Metallica eats a fart.

    • That Guy

but it isn’t even metallicas album its lou reeds’ album with metallica playing the instruments what don’t you people understand about that they didn’t wright the songs he did if your gonna hate anyone for it’s “suckitude” then hate lou

  • Fred_Durst

The problem isn’t the vocals, it’s the fact that it’s the same two riffs being repeated for 6 minutes. It’s more tollerable at 2 minutes, but still sucks.

It’s not about his desire to be a table.  He is the table.  It has already begun.  You cannot stop it.

    it’s still pretty awful

Every time you dummies post about Metallica, that’s free advertising. That means more people are gonna buy it, and the record company and the band are gonna get impressive sales figures and go “oh cool it was a good idea” and then other companies are gonna go “hey smashups like that are a good idea” and before you know it we’re gonna be looking at a record with Periphery and Mick Jagger. Thanks, jerks. If you don’t like it, ignore it. There is no such thing as bad press.

    • Damotello

I’d like to hear a collaboration between periphery and mick jagger.

I LOVE Metallica. I grew up on Megadeth and ‘Tallica. That being said, this made a fan of upwards of 10 years nearly hate Metallica. Changing their live sound to a family friendly plinkety-plonk band was one thing, but now Lou Reed? WHO THE FUCK KNEW WHO THAT WAS BEFORE LULU? I didn’t listen to Velvet Underground because their work is boring and… I’m straight.

  • Omar

I’m pretty clearly the most ardent defender of Metallica here, while Lulu isn’t my cup of tea I will say it is absolutely different.  Very unlike anything I’ve heard before.

The riffs are good and James’ voice sounds better than it has on the last few albums.  Maybe he’s using a studio effect on his voice like other older vocalists do, or maybe he’s just gotten comfortable with his new style of singing.  At any rate, it’s not a Metallica album it’s a collaboration with Lou Reed.  They’re compartmentalizing their hard rock side and they’re keeping their metal side separate.  Anyone who was at the Big Four show knows that they still have quite the metal side inside them.
