CHECK OUT MATT HEAFY FROM TRIVIUM’S OLD BLACK METAL BAND, MINDSCAR

It’s always fun to go back and look at stuff that future-heavy hitters did when they were just getting started — and I hope aspiring musicians find it inspiring, too. ‘Cause it just goes to show ya that no one comes out of the womb a fully-formed artist.

So you may enjoy the below — a rare demo by Mindscar, Matt Heafy’s pre-Trivium black metal band. (Although I’m not quite sure where this goes on a timeline in comparison to Capharnaum, the death metal band Heafy was in with Jason Suecof, who went on to produce Trivium, and pretty much every other band in the world.) What’s interesting is that while there’s obviously a lot about this that is just plain old not good, some of the riffs are not all that bad, and the band seemed to understand a lot of things about song structure that I think a lot of young bands completely overlook. So even if this was just one stop on Matt Heafy’s journey to Trivium, it may have very well been an important one.
