THIS IS NOT FANTASY CASTING: NERGAL IN NAZI COMEDY

Nergal is going to play a Nazi.

The Behemoth frontman, whose real name is Adam Darski and who is pretty much a giant rockstar in his home country of Poland, has been cast as “as former German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop in a new comedy film about the Nazis” called AmbaSSada (EmbaSSy), according to Polish radio outlet The News.

The film is being directed by “established film director” Juliusz Machulski, who has previously made “cult Polish comedies” with titles like Sex Mission. But lest you think Nergal is getting involved in some exploitation flick, you should know that Machulski also produced a Holocaust drama called In Darkness which was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar earlier this year, which I haven’t seen because I’m a film snob and I’m not a fan of the director. But the point remains that this dude is pretty legit.

Based on photos of Joachim von Ribbentrop (like the one above!), it seems to me that the only physical resemblance between him and Nergal is that they both have a forehead — but that’s not really all that important when considering what kind of performance Nergal is going to give, especially when you consider that von Ribbentrop is not as instantly recognizable as, say, Adolf Hitler or even Joseph Goebbels. And while the phrase “comedy film about the Nazis” might make you a little queasy, there is, in fact, no reason. I mean, I hated Life is Beautiful, but Inglourious Basterds was hilarious and not at all historically accurate. In other words… let’s just wait and see how this thing turns out. It starts shooting this month, so presumably it will get a release in Poland, if not elsewhere, next year.
