The MetalSucks Guide to SXSW 2013: The Metal Flicks

Also be sure to check out our lists of Official Metal SXSW Showcases and Metal Day Parties for SXSW 2013.

Metal makes its presence felt on the big screen as well at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. There is, of course, Black Metal, the short film that I worked on as a consultant and music supervisor. It features music from Vesperian Sorrow, Pallbearer, and Horned Almighty. Hopefully you caught it here when it screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

There is another short film that features black metal musicians but is much less serious called Necronomica (pictured above). I’ve seen it and dug it. Very funny.

Dave Grohl’s Sundance hit Sound City makes its Texas debut this week. I’m sure Mr. Grohl will be there for the intro and Q&A. Celebrities featured in the documentary that are already going to be at SXSW for other gigs include Stevie Nicks and Slipknot’s Corey Taylor. Expect them to be traipsing around town checking out the film. See my review of Sound City from Sundance.

Rob Zombie brings his wildly mixed reviewed The Lords of Salem for two screenings. He’ll be signing books at the Austin Convention Center and there will be a red carpet as well.

One that I really want to check out is Downloaded. It’s the story of Napster as directed by one of the Bill & Teds (Alex Winter). Here’s hoping for lots of Lars Ulrich.

A quad of punk rock films look intriguing: Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, The Punk Singer, The Punk Syndrome and A Band Called Death.

The one film that looks to hit home the most is a narrative entitled Zero Charisma. Looks like another metalhead movie that stereotypes genre fans, but it does look pretty funny.

Then there’s some Jared Leto and Green Day shit, but the less said about them, the better.
