Saturday To Get Stoned To
420 is an American concept. There is some pretty underwhelming folklore surrounding its origins: a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California used the number first in connection for a search for an abandoned cannabis crop stash, and then later as a meeting time…..to smoke pot.
Big whoop.
High Times editor Steven Hager calls 4:20pm the socially accepted hour of the day to consume cannabis, and links the early spread of the phrase with Deadheads of yesteryear, who were also connected to San Rafael.
A few years ago, when a deadly volcanic (h)ash cloud from Iceland was ravaging all of Europe and grounding flights left and right, my flight home from Amsterdam was, ahem, cancelled and I was, ahem, forced to have a mandatory extended vacation in Amsterdam for the whole week. Good times! So I was in fact there on April 20th, and I thought to myself “what a rare opportunity!” but in actuality nobody gave a flying fuck.
Except for a secret Cannabis Cup party at a recording studio/venue that I managed to find….but that’s a story for another time. My weed dealer is waiting for me…
