Jimmy Kimmel Demonstrates How Music Fans Love to (Pretend to) Know Obscure Bands

The Bravest Man in Metal, Kevin-Stewart Panko, said what I now want to say so eloquently back in October that I’m just going to cut-and-paste his fine work:

“Proving one’s worth in the world of extreme music has always been an issue. People are seemingly afraid to admit they don’t know it all and there are folks out there who will go out of their way to make you feel lesser for not knowing it all. Fuck, we’ve all done it and been there, and it doesn’t help that some will go out of their way to equate your admitting you haven’t heard so-and-so new band or this-and-that classic album with a crime against humanity.”

While this problem is obviously quite vast in the metal community, it’s not unique to us — it seems that all music fans wanna be “in the know,” so to speak.

Jimmy Kimmel demonstrated this brilliantly when he recently sent a “reporter” to Coachella to talk up fake bands to festival goers. And in case you don’t see where this is going… yeah, everyone pretended to know the “band” in question. Fucking. HILARIOUS.

Watch:

I particularly like the college radio DJ who claims to have played one of these made-up bands on his show. DOUCHEBAG.
