Earthling Dark Path

Sup y’all. Happy fuckin’ Tuesday! Let us emerge from last week’s tragic loss of demigod riffmaster Jeff Hanneman — still torn up about it, ugh — with some delicious Shit That Comes Out Today. I’m bringin’ some fun, upbeat type o’ shit to yer earholes, plus some classic thrashy goodness, so strap up and rock the fuck out. With a huge goddamn grin, that is. Chin up and, as always, cheers! *beer glasses clink*

F.K.U. Rise Of The Mosh MongersF.K.Ü.
4: Rise of the Mosh Monsters (Napalm)
On a playlist with: Russkaja, Dr. Living Dead, Gama Bomb
Listen “Black Hole Hell” (here)

Les start with a touch of comedy, mkay? And by comedy, I mean animated space travelers hacking apart purple-blooded aliens with meat cleavers. Yes. Yes. I mean, a video like that is why I love bands who just don’t take themselves so fuckin’ seriously. And while no videos can match Mastodon’s prowess (check out “Deathbound” for teh lulz), “Black Hole Hell” adds a new cartoonish dimension. The top comment on its video says it perfectly: “It’s like Metalocalypse and Sealab 2021 had a baby.”  Well, F.K.Ü., keep having dem babies, and F-K-Ü-too!

The Amenta - Flesh is HeirThe Amenta
Flesh Is Heir (Listenable)
On a playlist with: The Berzerker, Rings of Saturn, Abiotic
Listen Flesh Is Heir full stream (here)

Speaking of weird babies, Flesh Is Heir is like the lovechild of a self-aware chainsaw and a hog-wild jackhammer. It’s kind of hard to place in a genre (blackened death, perhaps?), but genres don’t mean shit when you can open a song like “Teeth” (starting at 0:15) with such total violence. Makes me want to churn Satan’s butter for him in hell! I mean, damn, Flesh just drippy-drips in glossy smoothness despite being interspersed with onslaughts of blast beats and enough tremolo riffage to start a whirlpool in the Atlantic. Note: Probably my favorite release this week! Debate below.

Gama Bomb The Terror TapesGama Bomb
The Terror Tapes (AFM)
On a playlist with: F.K.Ü., Bonded by Blood, Warbringer
Listen “Terrorscope” (here)

Challenge of the day: Listen to “Terrorscope” and don’t laugh when the song reaches the 2:12 mark (or 2:05 in the accompanying video), right after the fire-breathing solo. But seriously guise, Gama Bomb’s bombastic new jam puts them among fun bands who can kick shit and pump brains full of good feels. And it’s not like they degrade into some boring parody, they keep it real with fresh-yet-classic riffage, tom-heavy drumming, and a vocalist who probably rode in on a giant eagle. I dig it: The attitude which says “let’s make our listeners fuckin’ smile.” Worked on me. See? :D

Rotting Out The Wrong WayRotting Out
The Wrong Way (6131)
On a playlist with: Slayer’s Undisputed Attitude, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Cruel Hand
Listen The Wrong Way full stream (here), “No Clue” “Blade of Rust” “The Shoot Out” (here)

Well, straight out LA’s punk/hardcore scene comes Rotting Out’s metaltastic ripper, The Wrong Way. I mean, the combination of Araya vocals and standard-tuning hardcore breakdowns has me a bit giddy inside. All at once it’s razor-cut, classy/classic, and cherishable — a goddamn musical one-hitter. Inhale this shit: It’s great that most of the tracks hover around the two-minute length. There’s even occasional touches of The Dillinger Escape Plan in there, just less dynamically involved and varied in its construction. But that’s A-okay, sometimes straight-up, short-form kickassery is what you need. Consider it delivered (and you don’t have to sign for it)!

Amber LovesakenAmber
Lovesaken (Halo of Flies)
On a playlist with: Cult of Luna, Isis, Envy
Listen Lovesaken full stream (here)

Hailing from the sensationally gorgeous college town of Marburg, Germany, Amber are kicking their post-metal baby into a somewhat saturated scene. So, it better be good. And, well, Lovesaken is. Really fucking good. From the gentle outro to “Kings Like Us” to the build-ups in “Fading Away,” Lovesaken is touching and organic while decisively heavy and not-whiny. Not-whiny being the key point here, because new post-metal can be a fizzy bitch-fest which feels like pipe cleaners in my ears. Lovesaken transcends and satisfies. And oh shit, above I said that the new jams from The Amenta were my favorite of this week? Ahhh it’s so hard to fucking decide! Oh well, I <3 them both.

Sidious Ascension Throne ov SelfSidious
Ascension To The Throne Ov Self (Kaotoxin)
On a playlist with: Fleshgod Apocalypse, Ad Patres, Mortuorial Eclipse
Listen “Insurmountable Mass” (here)

Hm, Ascension To The Throne Ov Self in two words: Fucking gigantic. Just layers upon layers of heaviness caked up here. Unstoppable bass, killer synth, maddening legato riffs, and choruses that that sustain longer than a hatred for Dave Mustaine. (Mustaine sustain!) And son ov a bitch, the vocals just clean it all up with keyed range and sinking weight, making this release solid and approved thru-and-thru. For your kicks, definitely get a load of “Insurmountable Mass” and giggle in sheer delight at the very end when a mid-song crusher of a riff makes a final comeback and smacks you right in the fuckin’ cheek! Owie!
