“Look! My career fading into the sunset!”

This is not the Army of Anyone reunion Axl wished for when it was announced that Scott Weiland was fired from STP earlier this year.

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington is apparently the new vocalist for Stone Temple Pilots, at least for the time being. The quartet released a new song called “Out of Time” over the weekend and performed live with Bennington at the KROQ Weenie Roast in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The song isn’t horrible, but it’s not good either. It’s like stock STP of the past 10 years with Bennington’s annoying voice over it. Richard Patrick or Scott Weiland, Bennington is not. The DeLeo brothers will always sound like the DeLeo brothers, as they do here.

The band hasn’t made any official announcement yet that Bennington is the permanent frontman — in fact, a message on their official website would seem to paint this as a one-off — but these things seem to take on a life of their own once a collaboration experiences any kind of success. Hopefully Bennington’s commitment to sucking in Linkin Park keeps him from sucking in another band, too.
