Well, they both owe their careers to legendary A&R guru Monte Conner, they both really like being in bands whose name starts with the letter “S,” and they both have new albums streaming in full right now! Here are the specifics:

  • In the tradition of Slash’s Snakepit, Duff McKagan’s Loaded, and Don Dokken’s Dokken comes Joey Jordison’s Scar the Martyr, whose debut album is streaming right here. I’ve heard two songs from this album, “Contents Under Presh-Uh” and “Soul Disintegration,” that I’ve thought were really silly, but managed to get stuck in my head nonetheless. I’ve also heard two songs that I just thought were silly. Conclusion: I’ve heard four songs from this album. It comes out October 1 on Roadrunner.
  • Savages, the latest from Soulfly, is streaming below in advance of its October 1 release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. As is usually the case with latter day Soulfly, there’s some Sepulturian material on here which totally slays (“Cannibal Holocaust,” “Master of Savagery”), and there’s some stuff which is, uh, not Sepulturian. And one song is called “Soulfliktion.” Y’know, the first time Max Cavalera wrote a song where a variation of the word “infliction” was spelled with a “k” instead of a “c,” I thought he thought it was just cool-looking to spell the word that way. Now that he’s done it twice, though, I’m a little worried he just may not know how to spell the word correctly.
