Seeing metal bands on national network television always feels like something of a coup, no matter the band. “Ha! We tricked these unsuspecting normies into allowing us kids onto the air! Prepare your eardrums to suffer.” Of course it couldn’t happen to a better bunch of dudes than Red Fang, and they totally crushed it when they played The Late Show with David Letterman this past Friday night. Even though the Fang’s music certainly has some appeal beyond just the metal world, taken in this context they’re still pretty damned heavy; I’m sure (and I hope) that some unsuspecting Midwesterners in the audience expecting to hear some kind of unoffensive pop or indie band were absolutely appalled.

Non-sequitur: watching Dave Letterman play air-drums in the intro to this clip reminds me of the supercut video of Letterman asking bands “Are those your drums?” Must watch if you haven’t before. Letterman does give Red Fang drummer John Sherman some friendly joshing about not having a beard like the rest of his bandmates, but, sadly, doesn’t comment on the drum set.

By the way: Red Fang’s Aaron Beam guests on this week’s MetalSucks Podcast. Listen now!

Above, Red Fang performing “Blood Like Cream,” from their latest album Whales and Leeches, live on Letterman.
