Not Quite Metal?

Listen to This Acoustic Cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” by Members of Shinedown

Shinedown’s Brent Smith and Zach Myers are releasing an acoustic EP of covers on January 28th, which alone probably won’t interest very many MetalSucks readers (even those who already know of my long-standing boner for Shinedown). It’ll come out under the moniker Smith & Myers, not a proper Shinedown release.

But take a gander at this version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” one of the tracks on the collection, and try to muster at least some respect for Brent Smith — dude can SING. Having seen the band live I can say that he really is this good, a hundredfold better than Papa Het sounds live these days, love him as though I do. And as far as I can tell there are no overdubs of any kind here and everything is live — the performance you’re seeing them play in the video is also the one that you’re hearing, unlike a certain someone in a band whose name rhymes with Bings of Pattern.

Yeah, Smith and Myers took some liberties with the arrangement (i.e. no guitar solo) but it’s still pretty cool. Could use a few more “yeah–
