Whitechapel - Our Endless War

Axl and I are both excited for the new Whitechapel album, and it feels really weird saying that given how much we despised this band when they first broke. But here’s the thing: somewhere along the way Whitechapel stopped regurgitating deathcore tropes for the sake of being heavy/brutal/whatever and started writing actual songs. And as we’ve said time and time again, songwriting as what separates the men from the boys.

And so: “The Saw is the Law” is the first song we’re hearing from Our Endless War, and it’s pretty darned catchy. It’s got a gargantuan, slow groove, akin to the one that comprises the main riff in  “I, Dementia” from the self-titled 2012 record. Maybe Whitechapel have carved out a mini-niche for themselves as the deathcore band that plays things slooooow, kind of like a Down for the new generation. That said, the main riff (and especially the off-time thing they do in the song’s middle section and guitar solo) has a striking resemblance to Meshuggah’s “Do Not Look Down.” I’m not implying WC intentionally ripped off Meshuggah (I doubt it), I’m just saying they sound a bit alike.

Our Endless War comes out April 29th and is available for pre-order here.
