This New Boris Song is Super-Weird (But Cool)

BorisI admit that I haven’t followed Boris’ career that closely. My interest in them has been more of a passing one, listening to a new song here and there upon release, or checking them out on tour every couple of years when they roll through town. But I’m checking out the music video for their new song “Vanilla,” and I’m surprised / a bit disappointed to hear that pretty much all vestiges of their old doom sound are gone.

Still, I like the song. It’s got that bluesy feel that Boris have always had, and though the vocals are mixed strangely (very uneven, and WAY upfront), there’s something oddly catchy about it. There’s a heavy ’90s alt rock influence going on here too. And that guitar solo, though simplistic, is pretty nifty.

New album Noise comes out June 17th via Sargent House, and it seems like it’s going to be quite the eclectic affair: another new song called “Quicksilver” is completely different than “Vanilla,” way more metal and at least twice as fast. Catch Boris on tour in July and August with The Atlas Moth and Subrosa; dates here.
