As temperatures rise, so do tempers. And today’s muggy, gritty Shit That Comes Out Today might stoke them further, be it an infuriatingly bad, a frustratingly overlooked, a violently poetic, an enviably virtuosic, or a casually awesome new jam. But hey, you’re a metal person, so don’t blow your top; this new STCOT can soundtrack something positive — your daily Taxi Driver workout or seasonal home improvement project — not a destructive rampage of rage (à la the rest of Taxi Driver) or a trespass across the stage at an Eyehategod show. Crank it up!

Marty Friedman - InfernoMarty Friedman
Inferno (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Jeff Loomis, Dave Davidson, Paul Gilbert
Listen “Steroidhead” (here) “Meat Hook” (here) “Sociopaths” (here) “Inferno” (here)

There’s this thing with progressive instrumental albums — they need groove. Like, actual riffs — you know, like vocals could accompany the music, but just so happen to be performed by a guitar. Well, that’s Inferno, Friedman’s evidence that old dogs can fight with the young. Friedman rips mad solos, thrashy riffs — and no mega-cheese ladled on by Petrucci and Satriani. Also features a ton of guest appearances, including Dave Davidson (omg we <3 you Dave)!

powerman 500 - still aroundPowerman 5000
Builders Of The Future (T-Boy)
On a playlist with: Static-X, Rob Zombie, Scum of the Earth
Listen “How To Be A Human” (here)

You know, we can all congregate around what we hate to increase in-group cohesion and feelings of placement and identity? Right. But here that’s impossible because “How To Be A Human” is beyond jeers as one of the worst song you’ve ever heard. It’s like that time I heard Rammstein’s awful hit “Pussy” but at least they did it on purpose. Shoot me or flush this down the shitter.

Kadotetut (Svart)
On a playlist with: an avalanche of nuclear warheads
Listen Kadotetut full stream (here)

If you pumped Kadotetut through stadium monitors in a mineshaft, you’d bring down a mountain. There’s this monumental, oceanic quality to the album — it leaves you gazing at its sheer monstrosity. And, like, maybe the entire idea was to write something so outlandishly heavy that it turns all elephant-marching bands into Duran Duran. Gotta say, sounds like a damn good idea to me!

Eyehategod - EyehategodEyehategod
Eyehategod (Housecore)
On a playlist with: Weedeater, Enabler, Iron Monkey
Listen “Agitation! Propaganda!” (here) “Robitussin And Rejection” (here)
Read Sammy O’Hagar MetalSucks review (here)

I wasn’t always sold on Eyehategod. To me, they were a thickened, soupier predecessor of Enabler (see below) — but as I grow weary with my go-to selections, I need something with a bit more kick. Whereas Enabler uses the razor, Eyehategod uses the hammer, and this self-titled beast of an album definitely hits hard. Nevertheless I think the two bands pair well together, kind of like how a massively invasive brain surgery pairs well with a Turkish massage.

misery index killing gameMisery Index
The Killing Gods (Season Of Mist)
On a playlist with: Archspire, Dying Fetus, Cephalic Carnage
Listen The Killing Gods full stream (here)

Deep breaths. Think about baseball. Grandma’s cooking. Julia Roberts’ mouth –Anything to kill the now-patented Season of Mist boner. A few weeks ago, I raved about Archspire’s newest face-ripper. This week I’m raving about Misery Index. They swim in the same river as Archspire, but much, much deeper. All covered in grime and mud and grit and scum. Fantastically filthy but plenty technical! If your brain needs something to chew on, here it is.

Enabler - La Fin Absolue Du MondeEnabler
La Fin Absolue Du Monde (The Compound/Creator Destructor)
On a playlist with: Eyehategod, Ringworm, Trap Them
Listen La Fin Absolue Du Monde full stream (here)

La Fin Absolue Du Monde is overwhelming. It has all that rare, all-around great possessed by most instant classics. It’s fast, hard, grimy, groovy. No matter what perverted little sect of metal you’re “from”, this new Enabler album has something you want. And all I want right now is this new Enabler album. Boom! Got it.
