Best of 2014 So FarAnother year, another bunch of lists. It’s cool to compare these to past lists and see how our personal and collective tastes have changed – makes you wonder what we’ll be listening to in ten years. Though it doesn’t have the same big-name releases as 2013, 2014 is killing it in the underground, especially in terms of exotically-flavored blackness. And we’ve still got upcoming releases from Inanimate Existence, Pallbearer, and YOB to look forward to. It’s gonna be a gloomy summer.

Artificial Brain – Labyrinth Constellation (Profound Lore)
The Body/The Haxan Cloak – I Shall Die Here (RVNG)
Cognizance – Cognizance (Self-released)
Destrage – Are You Kidding Me? No. (Metal Blade)
Gridlink – Longhena (Handshake Inc)
Hexis – Abalam (Halo of Flies)
Inferi – The Path of Apotheosis (The Artisan Era)
Lord Mantis – Death Mask (Profound Lore)
The Mire – Glass Cathedrals (Self-released)
Psalm Zero – The Drain (Profound Lore)
Pyrrhon – The Mother Of Virtues (Relapse)
Thantifaxath – Sacred White Noise (Dark Descent)
Tombs – Savage Gold (Relapse)
Triptykon – Melana Chasmata (Century Media)
Wings Denied – Mirrors For a Prince (Self-released)
Also, not quite metal, but WIFE’s debut album What’s Between (James Kelly/Altar of Plagues) is excellent.
