Fear, Emptiness, Decibel: Spend Time in Dork Heaven with Wild Throne

dB_converse117Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is DecibelHere’s managing editor Andrew Bonazelli…

This installment of Converse x Decibel probably won’t be as weirdly controversial as the last one, but hopefully it’s as compelling. Wild Throne aren’t a household name in the extreme music universe, but they’re getting there—this very site premiered the Blood Maker EP (recorded by Ross Robinson) back in February, rightly comparing the trio to unpredictable, spasmodic predecessors like the Mars Volta and These Arms Are Snakes. Indeed, the WT boys cite one of the Volta’s major influences, Yes, as their own. Well, Yes and Judas Priest, but come on: What sort of asshole who plays heavy music doesn’t like Priest?

But really, this piece is all about the band’s love for a particular art space in their art space of a home city, Bellingham, WA. (Yes, that’s where Death Cab for Cutie are from; let’s try not to hold it against them.) Wild Throne are happy to throw a bone to multifunctional Bellingham art space Make Shift, where they practice and play, and it really does look like a unique, cool spot. Spend a couple minutes in Pacific Northwest art dork heaven.

The August 2014 issue of Decibel features Godflesh, the Melvins, and KEN Mode, and can be purchased here… but if you don’t just get a full subscription, you may be forced to listen to Death Cab for Cutie on repeat for 72 straight hours.
