DToys: Best band photo ever?

At a glance, it’s random that extreme metal’s best drummer has collaborated with the awesome singer of an also-ran hair metal band. But once you note that the latter is Jason McMaster of awesome Dangerous Toys, then it makes sense. Because McMaster — himself a “masters” course :) in scruffy, horny charm on DToys’ best three records — was previously singer-bassist of the first-wave tech-metal band Watchtower. So he’s probably known drummer Gene Hoglan since, like, days of Dark Angel, right? Sure.

And the point is that Hoglan (Testament, ex-Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Death) now has chipped in lyrics to two songs on the new album by Evil United, a heavy quintet fronted by a very serious and metally McMaster. Great pairing! Now it’s true, one of this singer’s great assets is humor — and there’s none of that apparent in the jams I’ve heard (below). But then again, the other sides of McMaster’s personality are just as interesting. You’ll see so in two lovable videos that btw could pretty much blend in on an episode of Rachtman-era Headbangers Ball. The only thing that doesn’t fit is the bass players clothes, as always.

Evil United’s new album Honored By Fire is out Tuesday via MVD. Pre-order here.
