Stream a Brutal New Track by ex-Slayer Drummer Dave Lombardo’s New Band Philm

PhilmAlright, I cop to that headline being total clickbait. For one, Philm aren’t really a “new” band at this point — they released their debut album Harmonic in 2012, back when Dave Lombardo was still in Slayer — although there’s a good chance you haven’t listened to them yet. And secondly, “Fire From the Evening Sun” is not exactly brutal, although it does get heavier as it goes on and there’s a full-on thrashy break in the middle. But you’re definitely interested in hearing new music from Lombardo, aren’t you? So, clickbait or not, everyone wins.

Loudwire has the premiere of the new song, which comes from the album of the same name. It starts out extremely un-metal, almost like indie rock or something, but quickly gets to a loud enough place that metalheads should be comfortable with. And then there’s the aforementioned thrash part, which is followed by a guitar solo that’s just as ripping. It’s different, and different is good. In short, if you couldn’t figure it out, I really dig this track.

Gerry Nestler (vocals, guitars) and Pancho Tomaselli (bass) round out the trio with Lombardo.

Fire From the Evening Sun comes out on September 16th and can be pre-ordered here.
