Thank You Scientist - Maps of Non-Existent PlacesThank You Scientist
Maps of Non-Existent Places reissue (Evil Ink)
On a playlist with: Between The Buried And Me, The Human Abstract, The End
Listen “My Famed Dissapearing Act” (here)

Ever come across a band and immediately wonder why they’re not more popular? Of course. Thank You Scientist has it all: progressive pretensions, digestible vocals, and unstoppable pop. Should be a wiener, right? Well, maybe not: The singing’s not awful, but it dampens TYS’s Grade-A mega soft guitar passages. And the nice drum rolls. And the good songwriting. Any good sound editors out there which can buff them out? Free of charge?

NightbringerNightbringer
Ego Dominus Tuus (Season of Mist)
On a playlist with: Aosoth, Antaeus, Ascension
Listen Ego Dominus Truus full stream (here)

Zen is in. Some people like to put on moody, candlelight music for their departure into semi-consciousness. Others listen to nature sounds, yet others just sit in silence, minus the occasional grumble. I prefer fucking black metal! And Ego Dominus Tuus is as about essential as it gets — it’s wildly intense but atmospheric. Oh, and evil. The beginning of “Lantern Of Eden’s Night” is so thick and so juicy that you end up knocking yourself out just to take it all in!

·

Come The DownCome The Dawn
The Light Of The World (Sumerian)
On a playlist with: I See Stars, Abandon All Ships, That’s Outrageous!
Listen “Game Over” (here)

Sumerian records might be the new melodic Rise Records. Remember those thick, ethereal albums by Born Of Osiris, Veil Of Maya, Conducting From The Grave, and company? Not these limp-wristed deals from bands with mag-cover names. Unless you for some reason dig whimpy vocals and cookie-cutter riffing, you best skip Come The Dawn and stick with the pros.

Capsize The Angst In My VeinsCapsize
The Angst In My Veins (Equal Vision)
On a playlist with: Last Witness, The Effort, Landscapes
Listen The Angst In My Veins full stream (here)

Despite its title, The Angst In My Veins is a refreshing take on West Coast hardcore — straight-up metallic hardcore without oversimplifying or sounding too classic. And while the genre can be a turnoff for some omg tru metal folk, the fullness of TAIMV‘s energy should be universally palpable. Despite this, though, it still doesn’t satisfy my buds like, say, Alpha & Omega — but it has a place alongside it as a softer, gentler cousin!

EvergreyEvergrey
Hymns For The Broken (AFM)
On a playlist with: Ihsahn, Manowar, Textures
Listen “King Of Errors” (here)

Nerdy, progressive power metal (with mystical references and shit) is hard to get into, especially with all the hyperspace singing and predictable song structures and wind-blown hair. But what happens when one of these bands gets innovative? Hymns For The Broken doesn’t shed all cheesiness, but damn is it ever good. “King Of Errors” (above) is indicative of what you’re in for: big, dramatic openers, hard riffage, burner solos, and space-man vocals. It’s moody and hard, well-versed, and not cringeworthy! But most importantly, it completely violated my expectations. #themoreyouknow

Torch RunnerTorch Runner
Endless Nothing (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Seven Sisters Of Sleep, Dead In The Dirt, Anal Cunt
Listen “Bound By Misery” (here) “Godlust” (here) “Circle Of Shit” (here)

Some music says: “Fuck you and your weak shit.” Endless Nothing is that music. The first one. Torch Runner has managed to combine all the chainsaw insanity of bands like Anal Cunt (lol) with the dexterity and and progression of your favorite post-grindcore outfit. But even with the nuances thrown in, Endless Nothing hits harder than about anything else this year. Just listen and believe, then comment below. I foresee it on some year-end lists!
