Calm HatcheryCalm Hatchery
Fading Reliefs (Selfmadegod)
On a playlist with: Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Immolation
Listen Fading Reliefs full steram (here)

There’s no denying the wide appeal of straight-up death metal, although it can be hard to do right. There’s always this potential to garnish it, which distracts from the rawness that defines it. I’m glad Fading Reliefs is old-school death metal both snappy and nostalgic. I’m also super glad these dudes are more under the radar, surprising given the sheer quality of this frickin’ sweet album.

Revocation - DeathlessRevocation
Deathless (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Arsis, Gorod, Skeletonwitch
Listen Deathless full stream (here)

Metal can pummel you, slap you, punch you, or nurse you from its tit — but fuck, does it barely give handjobs anymore. Revocation is one of those great last hoorahs to metal’s naughtier side. Am I calling Revocation a whore? Maybe, I mean I’m so cash-for-time on Deathless that I’m poor as fuck and smiling from ear to ear. It’s just something you have to hear, the quote-unquote magic in them is real and blows out of the speakers at 10,000 mph without stopping to take a piss. Love it.

OccultationOccultation
Silence In The Ancestral House (Profound Lore)
On a playlist with: Negative Plane, Ides Of Gemini
Listen “Laughter In The Halls Of Madness” and “The Dream Tide” (here)

Profound Lore has been building an impressive roster. So it’s unsurprising that this new jam by Occulation is fantastic. It’s the album you buy half because you want the cover art, and half cause you can immediately predict how you’re going to enjoy the music: baked/buzzed/ripped/tipped/whathaveyou. It’s a genie in a bottle, you want to rub it and see if a big ol’ fucking magical ghost pops out to grant you some wishes (more money pls kthx)!

·

Blut Aus NordBlut Aus Nord
Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry (Debemur Morti)
On a playlist with: Deathspell Omega, Darkspace, Aosoth
Listen Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry full stream (here)

Lovers of Deafheaven (guilty as charged) can forget that what they’re hearing ain’t new. Blut Aus Nord has been at this atmospheric, blackened, avant-garde thing since the mid-’90s. It’s nice to hear some old dogs playing new tunes — the package sounds mature, purposeful, and unshowy. Oh, and always super-moody and dark.

·

BaptistsBaptists
Bloodmines (Southern Lord)
On a playlist with: Converge, Enabler, Torch Runner
Listen “Calling” (here) “Harm Induction” (here)

All the circlejerking around Enabler makes it nice to herald some honest competition — and in the democracy of metal I might be inclined to favor the Baptists’ new album album for Top Dawg in their little subgenre. It’s razor-sharp, just as you’d expect, but rockable enough to sound excellent in your local dingy metal joint.

·

Lugal_ki_enRings Of Saturn
Lugal Ki En (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Beneath The Massacre, Origin, Archspire
Listen Lugal Ki En full stream (here)

All the hyper-technical death metal floating around … It’s hard to keep it all straight. The goal really is to make something so blisteringly heavy, fast, and complicated that all other notions get lost in the commotion. Rings Of Saturn’s new album is tasteful (lol) even though it might be the heaviest thing laid down in years. There are too many hng fuck yeah moments to count, but if you’re short on time, listen through 1:15 here and tell me it ain’t oh so sexy. This be my favorite jam this year.
