I was about forty seconds into “By My Side,” the new solo video from Memphis May Fire’s Matty Mullins, when I booted all over my laptop. Basically, I made it to the end of the first stanza of the first verse:
We take long drives
No destination in mind
And I don’t care where we’re going
As long as you’re by my side
Holy shit, is this is a love song, or a fucking Hallmark commercial? Who would find this maudlin shit appealing? Probably people who think Nicholas Sparks represents the pinnacle of romance and sincerity. Unfortunately, this video differs from a Nicholas Sparks story in one key way: everyone is still alive at the end.
