In This Moment - Black Widow

Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome back to Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of each week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and everybody wins. And if we missed any legit new shit, we beg you to email us! Thanks! Now crank it up!

·

KorzusKorzus
Legion (AFM)
On a playlist with: Sodom, Torture Squad, Machine Head
Listen “Bleeding Pride” (here)

Throwback vocals: love or hate ’em? They’re an acquired taste when matched with modern, core-sensible thrash. On this new Korzus jam, they work 80% of the time; but never on Legion‘s choruses. Not sure why some bands insist on clean-screaming (cough, Machine Head). Still, Legion is a forward attempt at music for driving and moshing. Not at the same time please.

·

StormvoldStormvold
Third Bestial Mutilation demos (Xtreem)
On a playlist with: Sarcofago, Hail Of Bullets, Bolt Thrower
Listen “Brilliance Of Thunder” (here)

From a band called Stormvold you may expect high-pitched power metal, not cut-and-slash death-inspired thrash! Beyond the surprise factor, Third Bestial Mutilation is a beast with every classic thrash hook imaginable amplified by 110%. An album that’s just “pure energy” might lack cohesion, but not this. Listen to “Brilliance Of Thunder” and pay special attention around 3:30. Horns on horns on horns as that shit speeds up even more!

·

timeworn Timeworn
Luminescent Wake (Disiplin)
On a playlist with: Summon The Crows, Eskatol, Black Blood World
Listen Luminescent Wake full stream (here)

Timeworn is a fuckin’ sweet name for a band, and Luminescent Wake is a fuckin’ sweet album of dirty, Scandinavian, rock-inspired bar thrash. For those new to this sort of thing, there’s no better introductory album to help learn your brain. It’s got everything you want to hear and nothing that you don’t.

·

Bloodbath - Grand Morbid FuneralBloodbath
Grand Morbid Funeral (Peaceville)
On a playlist with: Hypocrisy, Decapitated, Dying Fetus
Listen Grand Morbid Funeral full stream (here)
Read Excretakano MetalSucks review (here)

One honest gripe about Grand Morbid Funeral is that it kinda sounds like the work of Decapitated. We appreciate both bands (in the same way that we appreciate apple pie topped with American cheese), the ultra-polish chic of Decapitated’s latest album doesn’t play out with the Bloodbath’s gritter songwriting and raunchier appeal. Elsewhere Grand is one of the year’s best modern, mean, fuck-you-up death album. Pay special attention to its third track, “Anne,” which literally cuts skulls.

·

The DeadThe Dead
Deathsteps To Oblivion EP (Transcending Obscurity)
On a playlist with: Lair Of The Minotaur, Disbelief, Illdisposed
Listen Deathsteps To Oblivion EP full stream (here)

Good metal seeps out of the proverbial woodwork deep underground, and only matures as it comes out into the light. You can clock that type of evolution for The Dead, an Aussie band who’ve actually been around since 2005. The Deathsteps To Oblivion EP is messy at points and produced poorly, but some monstrous moments emerge for those who can disregard the potato recording quality.

·

NesseriaNesseria
Fractures (Throatruiner)
On a playlist with: As We Draw, Plebeian Grandstand, Cowards
Listen Fractures full stream (here)

Throatruiner is probably the best label for French post-metal, and Nesseria is a worthy companion to the likes of As We Draw (whose latest album rules) and Plebeian Grandstand. Fractures has what you’d expect from Euro post-metal: tons of overdrawn discordance, massive choruses, and tremolo picking for centuries. In a departure from the sometimes messier North American analogues, though, Nesseria keeps each song tight, packaged, and rockable — a refreshing, punchy take on a sometimes muddled and overblown subgenre. (Oh btw, Fractures can be had for free — but oh so worthy of a “name your price” donation. Kinda like your weekly STCOT!)
