thomas gilesThomas Giles
Modern Noise (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Between The Buried And Me, Trioscapes, Orbs
Listen “Siphon The Bad Blood” (here) “Mutilated World” (here) “I Appear Disappear” (here)

There’s this small category of non-metal solo albums by metal-as-fuck dudes, and Thomas Giles has been its king since Pulse in 2011. Modern Noise is much more, uh, modern and less experimental, but still rocks all the proggy, creamy goodness expected from a BTBAM frontman. My full review of Modern Noise coming your way soon!

owl the last walkOwl
The Last Walk EP (Zeitgeister)
On a playlist with: Inter Arma, Batillus, Woe
Listen The Last Walk EP full stream (here)

The less runtime you have to work with, the more difficult it can be to really set an atmosphere. The Last Walk EP’s one song nudges 26 minutes, and it’s an impressive feat that such depth can be extrapolated from such little time, relatively speaking (Reign In Blood is just under 30 minutes). I imagine that some bigger-named acts spend months in collaboration, while some individuals with Mr. Owl just have it at heart: those skills to variate, innovate, and thrill as if he were four or five minds together.

Cloudkicker - Live with IntronautCloudkicker
Live With Intronaut (Century Media)
On a playlist with: Chimp Spanner, Scale The Summit, Animals As Leaders
Listen Live With Intronaut full stream (here)

I don’t dive and die for live albums, but this new Cloudkicker album is the tits. (Oh yeah, and look forward to a studio release next week). It is recorded perfectly, and captures the essence of soft, sexy, one-man instrumental progressive metal. If you’re a Cloudkicker fanboy/girl, now you’ll instantly recognize your favorites! It’s pretty awesome that one dude can Bandcamp his way to playing with fuckin’ Intronaut. In fact, these first three albums in today’s STCOT are by one-man acts.

Anewrage ANRAnewrage
ANR (Sliptrick)
On a playlist with: shit
Listen “Ape’s Legacy” (here)

It’s not too often I encounter something so meh that it must be mentioned. My concern is that stiff non-metal folk look on us thinking “omg what a bunch of scum” as we party, mosh, and generally kick ass. Their prejudice against us is almost certainly supported by albums like ANR, which on the surface sound kinda metal but deep down are just alt-rock albums cranked to 11. “Wow, see, metal does suck!”

·

Cripper HyenaCripper
Hyena (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Arch Enemy, Sodom, The Agonist
Listen “Hyena” (here) “Tourniquet” (here)

Cripper will bring to mind the punch of Arch Enemy and the thrash of Sodom, but there’s so much more: modern, razor-cut core riffage, throwback song structures, and vocals to die for. What I love most is the German precision: Hyena is so well constructed that you almost begin to tune out the incredible performance of the lead lady!

·

Wayfarer - Children of the Iron AgeWayfarer
Children Of The Iron Age (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Agalloch, Trudger
Listen “A Place Among Stars” (hereChildren Of The Iron Age full stream (here)

Wayfarer needs to be on everyone’s radar from now on. Earlier this year they released Children Of The Iron Age, but now it’s re-released on Prosthetic, their new label. Now we can re-enjoy the fruits of their labor: a frankly massive yet delicately structured post-metal album for the ages, running high and strong with the big boys. Horns to Wayfarer and their success!
