Dave Lombardo Allegedly “Waiting” for Dave Mustaine’s Call

lombardo by phoneWhen Megadeth lost both guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer Shawn Drover last week, we said, “Gee, wouldn’t it be groovy is Dave Lombardo took Drover’s spot?” Which, admittedly, is not an original thought — I’m sure 99.9% of all thrash fans started praying for Lambardo to join ‘Deth as soon as they heard the news.

So, take this with a Gene Hoglan-sized grain of salt, but: a fan claims he asked Lombardo about the situation at a signing last week, and, allegedly, Lombardo’s response was (and this is supposed to be a direct quote, not a summation) “Dave [Mustaine] has my number, so I’m waiting.”

Actually, you don’t even have to take that supposed quote with a grain of salt, ’cause even if Lombardo did say it, it doesn’t mean jack shit. For one thing, who knows how much money Lombardo would want to join the band, and who knows if Mustaine would be willing to pay him as much… especially since he really doesn’t need to pay anyone that much: at this point, I don’t think any line-up enhancement short of getting Marty Friedman back into the band will really effect ‘Deth’s ticket sales, so why pay Lombardo when he can get some young, talented, hungry musician for a fraction of the cost?

And for another thing, Mustaine’s mother-in-law just passed away under tragic circumstances, so replacing Drover and Broderick is probably not his highest priority right now, regardless of whether or not Megadeth are supposed to enter the studio in January.

All of that being said… yes, of COURSE it would be rad if Lombardo joined Megadeth — assuming the new Megadeth album is more Rust in Peace and less Super Collider. I guess we’ll see what happens…
