fulgora stratagemFulgora
Stratagem (Housecore)
On a playlist with: All Pigs Must Die, Trap Them, The Red Chord
Listen “Meridian” (here)

Start your Tuesday right: pissed off! Even if you don’t have rage issues, you can fully dig Fulgora’s razor-sharp take on grindcore. Stratagem is a fleshed, longer-winded response to the smash-and-grab style of soundalikes. Example: the well-placed tempo shifts on “Meridian” help bring your deeper musical interests into play. Not just your raw, unbridled hatred for mankind or whatever, lol! [NOTE: This shit comes out March 24, not today. Forgive the bum steer. – Ed.]

callisto secret youthCallisto
Secret Youth (Svart)
On a playlist with: Mouth Of The Architect, Cult Of Luna, Isis
Listen Secret Youth full stream (here)

You’d have thunk that avant-garde and post-metal would’ve been closer bed buddies by now. Seems like post-metal takes more from the blackened end of the spectrum, which is why Callisto’s Secret Youth is actually a fresh listen. The difference lies mostly in the vocals: long, tense, hurt-sounding belts and wails verses incoherent screaming. And you still get all the gentle interludes and progressive change-ups that you’d expect!

Daemon PyreDaemon Pyre
Daemon Pyre (New Justice)
On a playlist with: Arch Enemy, Fallujah, The Agonist
Listen Daemon Pyre full stream (here)

Sorry, Australia, if you’re not mentioned enough in the metal world — y’all down under have the chops and passion to represent! Daemon Pyre’s self-titled is a solid-as-hell landmark on the three-way (lol) intersection of black, death, and core streets. You can windmill to the blastbeats and then show horns during the simple verse riffage and still have time to facemelt when things get dark. Also give these dudes a thumbs-up cause it’s their first album!

12 Jacket (3mm Spine) [GDOB-30H3-007}Dead In The Manger
Cessation (20 Buck Spin)
On a playlist with: Ulcerate, Lord Mantis, Artificial Brain
Listen Cessation full stream (here)

Chewy, deranged, short-form progressive punch metal? A descriptive category for Cessation might be esoteric (or elusive), so you’ll need to sit down and really give it a full spin. If you judge Cessation by the second, you’ll be overwhelmed with all that’s going on. But if you judge it in its entirety, you’ll see its brilliance!

A Swarm Of The SunA Swarm Of The Sun
The Rifts (Version Studio)
On a playlist with: Aoria, Nacthreich, Kauan
Listen The Rifts full stream (here)

After getting all spun up about Dead In The Manger (above), get all spun down with The Rifts, a mellow, mostly instrumental mood album. If you’ve ever wanted to experience closed-eye visuals, The Rifts may be the soundtrack for you! Maybe even in a sensory deprivation chamber (not counting the album as sensory input, which it very much is)? Bottom line: well-paced, slow-building, and gentle, The Rifts is soothing and stimulating.

Hellish Outcast Stay of ExecutionHellish Outcast
Stay Of Execution (Listenable)
On a playlist with: Testament, Annihilator, Harm
Listen Stay Of Execution full stream (here)

Thrash, finally! Are most people’s “first metal bands” actually thrash bands? We might never know (although you can discuss below) — but we do know for certain that Stay Of Execution fucking rips. And when I say “fucking rips” (I say it a lot), I really mean it. But this time I really fucking mean it.
