Call of the Void - AgelessCall Of The Void
Ageless (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Toothgrinder, All Pigs Must Die, Baptists
Listen Ageless full stream (here)

You should agree: this new wave of total fuck-you-up metal doesn’t suck. The goal: create as much (coherent) violence as possible without sounding too punky/hardcore. Like, metallic hardcore tossed into a volcano and then shot into space. Do you like Toothgrinder? Yes you do! Will you like Call Of The Void and their new album Ageless? Yes you will!

CowardsCowards
Rise To Infamy (Deadlight)
On a playlist with: Call Of The Void, Coalesce, Converge
Listen Rise To Infamy full stream (here)

See above blurb for Call Of The Void, but now add some blackened death. Rise To Infamy follows the “extremer than thou” trend and delivers a surefire fucker-punch right to the jaw! Don’t you love at 1:30 into the first song the bwawww holding riff which then turns into boom dum dum boooom? I do. I like it so much. Head spinning!

·

Monolith-Against-The-Wall-Of-Forever-2015Monolith
Against The Wall Of Forever (Funeral Noise)
On a playlist with: Sigh, The Sword, Iron Maiden
Listen Against The Wall Of Forever full stream (here)

NWOBHM has been on the back-burner for some time now. Let’s change that! Remember the fun factor in metal? When riffs were upbeat, distortion was soft and warm, and vocals were clean and belting? When drum riffs were classic, when song structures were predictable, and when you could crank shit with the windows down and feel on top of the world? Monolith does!

·

Heaving EarthHeaving Earth
Denouncing The Holy Throne (Lavadome)
On a playlist with: Beneath The Massacre, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Brain Drill
Listen Denouncing The Holy Throne full stream (here)

With some bands and albums, names do really speak for themselves! Song titles on Denouncing The Holy Throne include: “Nailed To Perpetual Anguish,” “Into The Depths Of Abomination,” and “Jesus Died.” Fuck, how could anything else match that kind of intensity? Expect to find more notes on this one album than most bands write in entire careers. Heaving Earth will give you the heaves if you can’t digest the BTM-style nuttery. Rock it!

·

EmbryoEmbryo
Embryo (Logic (Il)logic)
On a playlist with: Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septic Flesh, Beyond Creation
Listen “An Awkward Attempt” (here)

Death metal is carried heavily on the shoulders of drummers. Fleshgod Apocalypse’s drummer Francesco Paoli is badass! Embryo delivers synth-heavy metal in the vein of Fleshgod, but with less attack and more nuance. Think of Embryo as having the same alcohol content, just with less booziness to knock you off your feet. Oh, did I mention the synth?

·

Wells-Valley-Matter-As-Regent-coverWells Valley
Matter As Regent (Bleak)
On a playlist with: Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Inter Arma
Listen Matter As Regret full stream (here)

Something fresh in the-post metal scene, taking cues from bands whose vocals differ significantly from the crowd — that’s Wells Valley. You can feel the avant garde-ness here, but it’s not overt. Nor is their overall approach, which is actually pretty straightforward. Think subtleties here: that means paying close attention to Matter As Regret over multiple listening sessions! The rewards will be bountiful. This is a wonderful, nuanced, kinda-weird release and marks a great-as-fuck February for your listening pleasure!
