tony iommi and his momThe origin story of heavy metal is as well worn as those of Batman and Spider-Man: Tony Iommi didn’t see his parents killed in an alley, and he was never bitten by a radioactive spider, but he did lose two finger tips in a factory accident, forcing him to tune his guitar down so he could actually bend the strings. Thus, the classic heavy metal sound was born. Old news, right?

But did you know that Iommi came this close to avoiding the accident… and that the whole thing was, in a very indirect way, his mom’s fault?

In an animated short for VH1 Classics‘ new series The Complete History of Heavy Metal, Iommi — who turns 67-years-old today — reveals that he had actually planned to skip work that fateful afternoon… until his mom made him go. Watch:

So, there ya have it, folks. Just goes to show ya: you should always listen to your mother! If not for Mrs. Iommi, we may have been denied so much amazing music.
