Ugh, all this post-y black metal these days! So say Carach Angren, who went 100% straight-up with their latest. Great “genre-standard” releases must always forward-thinking despite their conservatism, and such is the case with This Is No Fairy Tale. Another great entry on Season Of Mist’s already impressive portfolio!

Here’s something interesting: an “alternative” metal band which doesn’t sound alternative! Soft melodies and doom-like tempos keep Hide strictly progressive. You can get lost in the simplicity that makes Burweed what they are — nothing fancy, just something good!

The Long Goodbye iterates Deafheaven in form, but not style. You get exaggerated, synth-backed verses and lots of wholly indecipherable screaming. And you get those soft, beauty moments in the middle of tracks. But while Deafheaven can feel hollow and artificial, An Autumn For Crippled Children (intense name, btw) always feels 100% wet and natural!

There’s something to be said for hook value. Think of Halshug as the hookiest crustpunk band out there, with the slightest injection of more intelligent The Dillinger Escape Plan madness. Blodets Bând is pretty much a machine gun of headbanging and catchy chorus vocals (you’ll be screaming “boots for lard!” for days)!
