When did Mastodon become such a lightning rod for controversy? In 2013, it was a Thanksgiving-themed shirt depicting genocide that ticked people off; in 2014, it was their twerktastic video for “Motherload;” and now, it’s another holiday-centric shirt — this one themed for St. Patrick’s Day, which will be celebrated next Tuesday, March 17.

Mastodon Leprechaun Shirt

You would think that Irish Mastodon fans would have a sense of humor about the shirt — I mean, it’s not like the Irish ever deny that they’re big drinkers — but no! The Diminutive Representatives of United Northern Kildare, a group “dedicated to the positive portrayal of leprechauns in the media,” has now released the below statement condemning the design:

“For too long, the proud leprechaun, Ireland’s most magical of beings, has been disrespected by the world at large. Mastodon’s new shirt design is just the latest in a long list of offenses, which include the representation of leprechauns as pushers of sugary cereals and gold-obsessed mass murderers — as though we were merely rabbits or Jews. For one of the world’s foremost rock bands to now further these ugly, dated stereotypes is disgraceful. Consequently, we hereby call on all the peace loving peoples of the world, whether Irish, Asian, African, or any nationality that isn’t Jewish, to boycott Mastodon and tell them that their behavior is unacceptable.”

Mastodon have yet to issue a response, but we’ll let you know the moment they do.
