And the “Best Use of Flowers in a Metal Music Video” Award Goes to Valborg

ValborgGerman doom trio Valborg came down like a scion from heaven on the eve of the fifth anniversary of Peter Steel’s death last month. Their new song “Comtesse” completely swept me up, both in its clear Type O Negative influence and its originality and emotional heft. I was hooked from note one.

Romantik comes out today via Temple of Torturous, and No Clean Singing has premiered a video for the song “Sulphur Vitriol Angel.” It’s got the same doomy, haunting, gothic vibes as the track we heard in April, and it’s also got that Valborg-ness that drew me to the band in the first place: that mix of Type O worship and the band’s own, unique thing. The video is also quite striking in appearance, especially for the non-standard metal aesthetic referenced in this post’s headline. Check it out below.
