Not Quite Metal?

Forgive Yourself, the debut album from Publicist UK, is going to rule. There is no question. Both songs the band has released from the album so far have absolutely astounded.

If you’re just catching up, the band features Dave Witte (drums in every band ever), Revocation bassist Brett Bamberger (also ex-East of the Wall), Goes Cube guitarist David Obuchowski and Freshkills vocalist (and Noisey writer) Zachary Lipez.

Last month we heard “Levitate the Pentagon,” and today we get “Cowards,” via Noisey, which might start off noticeably less heavy than the former but more than makes up for it by the time the song comes to an end. What I like so much about this band is how heavy they are without really being capital-M Metal; on their own some of the parts of these songs could be considered metal, but in the context of the whole they’re really not. The vocals are too out there and the arrangements too varied. And I mean that in the best way possible, because our scene could really use more left-of-center acts like Publicist UK. With renewed interest in bands like Failure and Hum now could be just the right time for a band like Publicist UK.

Forgive Yourself comes out on August 21st via Relapse. Pre-order it on physical formats here and digital here.
