post-engineeredCompilations are a dying breed, and it’s too bad — they’re just so much fun! For those of us who are constantly seeking out new bands from ever-widening micro-genres of the music world and who get off on discovering diamonds in the rough, they’re the perfect sampler plate, like taking a little bit of everything at the salad bar buffet. Sure, you’re not gonna like everything, but even if only one or two new discoveries suit you the experience is incredibly fulfilling.

Today’s compilation comes from the blog Post-Engineering, one I wasn’t familiar with until today (thanks to Heavy Blog) but I’ll make sure to add to my RSS feed post haste. Post-engineered vol. 1 features 39 tracks whose running time totals over four hours and highlights a slew of post-rock and post-metal bands from all over the spectrum within those classifications (which is a lot more varied than you might think). Some names should be familiar to MetalSucks readers — Huldra, North, Kollwitz — but, as I said in the intro, the true fun in these comps is discovering something new. And there’s a LOT of new stuff here to discover! I’ve only gotten as far as track 2 in the time it’s taken me to write this, and I’m already in love with stonefromthesky; need to learn more about this band ASAP.

The compilation had been completely free to download, although now it’s posted at €0.50 — still a paltry sum — possibly because they ran out of free downloads. You can stream it below or buy it via Bandcamp.
