Lamb of God Sturm Und Drang

Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the new Shit That Comes Out Today  “today” being Friday as of three weeks ago — your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!

One Master Reclusive BlasphemyOne Master
Reclusive Blasphemy (Eternal Death)
On a playlist with: Wovoka, Ulcerate, Akhlys
Listen “A Cursed And Dismal Mind” (hereReclusive Blasphemy full stream (here)

If you one-o’-them folk who thinks black metal has gotten too “polished”, then dig into Reclusive Blasphemy. Pretty much, it’s raw as fuck. From the schizophrenic song structuring to the hellish moaning to the song titles and cover art, this is a comprehensively sinister album. Also, there’s just that right touch of Norwegian sensitivity to set it apart from its harder ‘murican counterparts!

·

hope droneHope Drone
Cloak Of Ash (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Wolves In The Throne Room, Nevoa, Vattnet Viskar
Listen Cloak Of Ash full stream (here)

On the softer/post side of black metal lands Hope Drone. Actually, Cloak Of Ash is their debut and it is undeniably strong for a first go. A lot of the fluffy pretensions you get with Deafheaven-style bands are absent here (not to say they sound too similar). This is refreshing because Cloak still has some welcomed softness and hipster malleability, making it rockable even if you’re not exactly “in that mood.”

Atheist-Unquestionable-Presence-43190-1Atheist
Unquestionable Presence CD/DVD reissue (Season Of Mist)
On a playlist with: Death, Pestilence, Coroner
Listen Unquestionable Presence reissue full stream (here)

Reissues are not the focus of Shit That Comes Out Today, but this is an exception: Atheist reissue! It’s amazing to think that back in 1991 (in Florida no less) that there was a group of dudes shredding this hard and this progressively in a straight-up metal framework. Even 24 years later it feels like forward-thinking. That is no small achievement!

·

lifetime shitlistLifetime Shitlist
Pneumaticon (Grimoire)
On a playlist with: Municipal Waste, Poison Idea, Nuclear Assault
Listen Pneumaticon full stream (here)

You’d expect a band named Lifetime Shitlist to be pretty pissed off. So yeah, you’re on their shitlist alright — there’s more assaulting crustpunk/thrash on Pneumaticon than most bands in those respective genres can muster in a career. Also the vocals are a real hook for this style of music: deep, pained, unrelenting gurgles. #giggles

·

kronosKronos
Arisen New Era (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with: Beneath The Massacre, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Hour Of Penance
Listen Arisen New Era full stream (here)

Treading the fine line between good technical death metal and genericore, Kronos actually does a good job at bitch-slapping its playlist buddies. While other TDM bands are excessively hard-edged, Arisen New Era comes forward with Gorod-esque softness and listenability. Instead of crunching your brain into submission, Arisen serenades you along a nice, gentle stream through the woods!

·

locrianLocrian
Infinite Dissolution (Relapse)
On a playlist with: AUN, Menace Ruine, Jodis
Listen “Dark Shales” (here) “Heavy Water” (here)

I saw Locrian last weekend (stay tuned for a review of that show!). Not to give away too much, the answer to your question of whether you should care about this band is “yes”. They’re more experimental/noise than black metal, but that’s exactly the point — I think they’ve nestled into their own special little corner and are making fine use of it!

·

sons of hunsSons Of Huns
While Sleeping Stay Awake (Riding Easy)
On a playlist with: softer Revocation, Electric Citizen, Kadavar
Listen While Sleeping Stay Awake full stream (here)

And after you’re done listening to all the srs bsnss above, dig into Sons Of Huns and have a fucking good time! While Sleeping Stay Awake is a mid-distortion tube amp shredfest with throwback vocals and Revocation-style processions. There’s not much not to like about this album — even its complexity is enchanting despite the simple thrash groundwork it’s built on!
