Ghost - Meliora

Ed. Note: Vince goofed and forgot to run this post on Friday, August 21st. Whoops! Here it is one weekday late, but still in plenty of time for you to get the week’s new releases before the next round rolls in at the end of this week.

Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the new Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!

Ghost - MelioraGhost
Meliora (Loma Vista)
On a playlist with: Lucifer, The Devil’s Blood, Mercyful Fate
Listen Meliora full stream (here)

Ghost is good. They write good studio albums. They make good cover albums. They have a cool stage presence. They sound snappy and fresh, but oddly familiar. They’re kinda dark, but then kinda not. They’re just evil enough, but if it was on in the background around your grandma, she’d think it was just the radio. Meliora is exactly as expected.

The Devil Wears Prada SpaceThe Devil Wears Prada
Space EP (Rise)
On a playlist with: dingleberries, decaf, dysuria
Listen “Supernova” (here)

This one year long ago I got roped into going to Warped Tour. I saw TDWP play. I remember standing pretty far back, but I could still feel the bass thumping my chest. The lead singer at one point went on a monologue about some spiritual stuff and then it was all over. I had a beer and didn’t think about TDWP until like years later (ie. 30 seconds ago) when I saw that they have a new EP. It fucking sucks hard.

ScythianScythian
Hubris In Excelsis (Hells Headbangers)
On a playlist with: Venom, Sodom, Bathory
Listen Hubris In Excelsis full stream (here)

Good death metal retains all the classic tropes but throws a new spin on things. That’s what can be said about Hubris In Excelsis, which opens with a fucking guitar solo and rips through nine tracks with middle fingers still up! Detractors may note the “we’re influenced by everything” ethos of Scythian — but that’s okay, cause more = merrier.

lychgateLychgate
An Antidote For The Glass Pill (Blood)
On a playlist with: Macabre Omen, Dendritic Arbor, Fyrnask
Listen An Antidote For The Glass Pill full stream (here)

Here’s some good, funky, melodic blackened death metal! Or is it deathened black metal? Hard to say, really, but then again An Antidote For The Glass Pill is a hard-to-talk-about album. It’s weird, loud, and mean, etc., i.e. anyone into drama + suspense + tension will find great things within its ice-cold grasp.

·

CROWNCrown
Natron (Candlelight)
On a playlist with: Anaal Nathrakh, Nile, Rammstein
Listen Natron full stream (here)

Bandcamp might be the best place to buy music. Also you read great user reviews there: “Listening to this album is akin to being stalked by a giant, robotic tarantula; you know something huge and terrifying is after you by the bowel-rupturing racket it makes, but just as you think it’s about to come clanking out of the darkness to put an end to your misery, everything goes eerily quiet so you have no idea whether, if you run, you’re heading towards or away from it. Then it eats you anyway.”

·

Rivers of Nihil - MonarchyRivers Of Nihil
Monarchy (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Inanimate Existence, new Cattle Decapitation, the actual baby Jesus
Listen Monarchy full stream (here)

One of us here at MetalSucks wrote that Rivers Of Nihil is so good that it’s not fair. And pretty much: A mere mortal cannot qualify the sheer fucking moving power of this album. Sure, RoN’s debut The Conscious Seed Of Light (2013) was all-star from the get-go: pure, raw freshness from a totally green band. Monarchy is a maturity (and a blackening) of this incredible, bespoke, passionate heavy metal band. A must-listen! I guarantee this will appear on many year-end lists.
